Newman News Term 4 Week 6: From the Leader of Primary

As we begin to move towards the end of the school year, it Is very easy to start听thinking about the year ahead.听 However, we are still very much focused on helping all of our students to finish听the school year听well, and enter the summer break feeling good about their accomplishments across the year.

Next听Friday, we will听be holding听a transition afternoon听for the first time听for all of our students from Kindy to Year 5.听Students will be听informed听of their class and teacher for next year, and then given听a chance to spend some time in the afternoon with their new teacher and classmates in their new classroom.听This will give students a chance to experience their new environment for 2022, as well as begin to build a relationship with their teacher. We are looking forward to the afternoon,听and I鈥檓 sure it will be well received by students too.

Remembrance Day听

Last Thursday, 11 November, students gathered together to take part in a commemoration of Remembrance Day. This is a special day where we remember the sacrifice of soldiers everywhere who have died in conflicts across the world, but especially World War I. Students from Year 6 led our ceremony, reading the poem In Flanders Fields, and reciting the Ode of Remembrance. I would like to thank all those students who took part in our commemoration showing reverence and respect, and especially to our Year 6 students for leading the ceremony for us all.

Leadership Retreat听

Last Friday, Year 5 students gathered in the hall to take part in their Leadership retreat. I must say, I have been quite impressed with the thoughtful, and mature approach our Year Five students have taken to the leadership process, and I know many students agonised long and hard over their leadership letters. Students had a great time at the retreat, balancing a mix of the leadership qualities we might see in superheroes, as well as recognising how the Fruits of the Holy Spirit can be drawn upon to demonstrate Christ centred leadership. Students will be presenting their speeches next week, and we will announce our student leaders for 2022 shortly thereafter.

Touch Rugby Carnival听听 听

Last week several our Year 6 students, accompanied by supercoaches Mrs Richards and Mrs Biancuzzo, took part the IPSHA Touch Rugby Carnival. Students have been practicing hard over a number of weeks and had a great time at the carnival. Mrs Biancuzzo鈥檚 team went undefeated, while Mrs Richards鈥 team won all but one of their games, so there could be some future champions among our group! Most impressive though, was that the students improved with each game over the day, and the great sportsmanship and spirit of competition the students showed on the day. We are always very proud to hear of moments when our students represent our College so well.

Year 3 Fire & Emergency Services Incursion听

Last Friday, our Year 3 students were very lucky to have a visit from Mr Kelly Wyeth (Dad of Billie (Y3) and Austin (Y6)) who came with his team of Fire and Emergency Services personnel to talk with students about fire and fire safety. Year 3 students have been learning about heat transfer as part of their science program, and the different ways heat can move in and around objects. Mr Wyeth presented on some of the ways fire can move and spoke to students about some of the technology emergency services use to track fires, and how they can move so quickly through the environment. Fortunately for students, Mr Wyeth was able to bring the fire truck too meaning students were really able to gets hands on with their learning. We owe a big thanks to Mr Wyeth and his team for giving up their time, and helping to create a very real and authentic learning experience for our students.

Transition Day听

In our continuing efforts to cater to our student wellbeing needs and provide a settled transition into the new school year, we will be holding a transition session for all students in Kindy 鈥 Year 5 on Friday 26 November.

All students in Kindy to Year 5 will be informed who their 2022 classroom teacher will be, and they will then spend time in their new classroom, meeting with their teacher. This will provide students with an opportunity to ask questions about the 2022 school year and begin the important connection with their new teacher and classmates.

Class lists will be sent to families at 3.30pm on Friday 26 November.听Please note that no changes to class lists will be possible.听Families have been invited to contact myself, or their child鈥檚 current classroom teacher if they had any concerns regarding 2022 classroom placement. Additionally, all children have been asked who their friends at school are, and we have ensured that at least one of these named friends will be in each child鈥檚 2022 classroom.

We will also welcome听all听our Year 2 students听on this听day听where they will听enjoy a day of orientation at the Lavalla campus. If you see any of our younger students please join us in making them feel welcome with a friendly smile or wave hello.

Charlie & the Chocolate Factory Production Rehearsals听

Last week听several听students across our campus began preparing for the College production for 2022 鈥 Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. You can have a read of their experiences below.

Hi! We are the Year 4听oompaloompas听from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and we are here to tell you about the rehearsal day we had in the auditorium. It was a great day. We all got to see what everyone from the camp had been working on. After watching some songs we got called out to get our lunch which was Chicken Treat. Then we went up to the steps and ate our lunch 鈥 it was delicious! We all had an icy pole too and then ended up creating a circle and going in to do tricks and dancing. After that we went and joined the rehearsals. We ran through about six songs, and when we weren鈥檛 performing our songs, we could watch the others. It was so cool to see what everyone was working and everything has been going really good so far. All of us are very excited and we had an incredible day.听听

Berkley, Mila, and Avia 鈥 Year 4听

My favourite part of the camp day was having the opportunity to practice on stage. It made me feel very excited and happy and also听very grateful that we had been chosen. Being in the auditorium was a great experience because we got to see all the other members of the cast and we realised that Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was alive! We can鈥檛 wait for the performance day next year and would like to thank all the staff who work so hard听to direct and encourage us.听听

Swimming Lessons听

This week we commenced the first of our two weeks of swimming lessons. I think the combination of the warmer weather and refreshing water has meant many students have thoroughly enjoyed their time in the pool this week. We have spoken as a campus about the importance of listening to our swim teachers, and expressing our thanks to them at the end of each lesson which students have been doing. Let鈥檚 keep this up! Students have also done quite well with lost property! If your child is missing a towel, sock, or goggles please check the undercover area, or you can check in with Mrs Johnson in the office.

Newman Junior Netball听

It was very pleasing to hear recently of the success of one our Newman Junior Netball teams! The听Year 5 Sapphires team recently won the premiership for Division One, beating a number of other teams along听the way in what was a very successful season.听It was a wonderful achievement for the girls. End of Year Celebrations

At 今日吃瓜, we shine through celebration of our faith, achievements, effort, and contribution. Celebration builds strong communities and plays a major role in social, emotional and academic growth, learning and faith development. It encourages a sense of belonging, group coherence and purpose.

In celebrating, we encourage intrinsic motivation to develop the attributes of听courage and dedication, to achieve our full potential

To enrich the success of our community we celebrate the gifts, talents and achievements of each member and acknowledge the role that self-discipline, perseverance and determination contribute to striving for individual and collective excellence.

In our Vision for Learning 鈥楽hine through Discovery鈥 – let your light shine (Matthew 5:16) this pedagogical pillar Celebrate invites our students to recognise their own self worth.听 Each child has gifts and talents and it is in the space we create in their learning that aims to invite them into participating whole-heartedly into their endeavours.

In our Strategic directions framework we have prioritised a culture of excellence that encourages our children to flourish, co-learning and co-constructing with their teachers in discovering and devising new methods and content to ensure that we always get our best learning experience.听 It is worth noting that St John Henry Newman, as an academic, challenged his students to be excellent in all endeavours that they pursue.听 It is this same intent that we endeavour to achieve at 今日吃瓜 for our students.

Next week marks the start of end of year events where we celebrate the achievements of 2021, commencing on:

Marist Schools Australia Alumni Project

2022 marks the 150th year of Marist education in Australia. For a century and a half, Marists have contributed to the education of hundreds of thousands of young Australians. In a spirit of thanksgiving to God, Marists will recognise and celebrate the privileged work and service to the Church in Australia through our schools by so many dedicated and committed people.

One of the Projects for the sesquicentenary of Marist education in Australia will be the Marist Alumni Project. This project has been designed to identify and celebrate significant contributions Marist educated women and men have made to our nation over the past 150 years, echoing the dream of Saint Marcellin for Marist education, 鈥渢o form good Christians and good citizens.鈥

The main outcome of this project is the creation of an Anthology of Outstanding Australian Marist Alumni. The Anthology is a way of recognising those alumni who have made a significant and outstanding contribution to Australian life. The intent of the Marist Alumni Project is to capture some of those who have truly made their mark on Australian society.

I will be working with the College Council and our Archivist to delve into 今日吃瓜鈥檚 history to discern the most appropriate nominations to put forward.

Tuition Fees

In determining the 2022 tuition fee increase, the College Finance Committee and Council were very conscious of the need to set fees at a level that provides the College with the essential income to meet its ongoing financial commitments now and into the future. In addition, we have faced the challenges presented with the changing funding agreements, resulting in a reduction in our transition funding and reduced State Government funding. Please click here to access the College fees and charges for 2022.

COVID-19听Staff Vaccinations听

As mandated by the Western Australian Government, I wish to inform families that 今日吃瓜 is currently implementing this directive, ensuring that by the commencement of the 2022 school year all staff onsite at 今日吃瓜 are double vaccinated against COVID-19.

All Saints and All Souls Day

The week began听with听November 1听and 2, where in the Catholic Tradition we celebre All Saints and All Souls Day.听Pope Francis reminds us that听鈥淪aints are not听super听people听who are born perfect, but rather ordinary people who follow God with all their heart鈥. An important reminder that all of us can be saints in the way we choose to live.

All Souls Day is an opportunity to remember the people in our lives who have died and the important role they played in our formation.听For the month of November,听a prayer table has been set in the Chapel that will allow staff, students,听and families to write the names of their loved ones and place it in our听bowl. This bowl will be offered up听on Thursday morning Community Mass, where we will remember those听special people in the lives of our community.

Socktober听for Catholic Mission听

Staff and students across the life of the College have participated in the annual 鈥淪ocktober鈥 celebrations.听鈥淪ocktober鈥 is an annual event initiated by Catholic Mission.听This year fundraising and advocacy has听a focus in Thailand where the Good Shepherd Sisters are supporting vulnerable families by providing for the nutritional, medicinal and educational needs of young children at their Kindergarten centre in Bangkok. Click听here听to听access听more听information听about 鈥淪ocktober鈥 and how听Catholic Mission continues to support听the most vulnerable in our global community.

It was听a picture of colour on Friday morning as staff and students wore their colourful and crazy socks. Lavalla students听played a soccer match against staff, where staff were 1-0 victors and Marian students lined up to shoot the听handmade balls at Mrs听McClue, Miss Anderson and Mr Martino.听Year 8 students at Marcellin participated in听a soccer competition with听Brigid听winning the Boys competition and听Thomas More听winning the听Girls competition.

Thank you to our families, staff and students for听living out the Catholic Social Teaching听of 鈥榩referential option for the poor鈥, where we put the听needs of the poor and vulnerable at the centre.

Altar Server Training

Students have been training to be Altar Servers within the life of our College and their Parish.听Training has taken place in the Chapel, where students have reflected on the purpose of serving, the role of the Altar Server and听the importance of this ministry. We look forward to commissioning all听students at next Thursday 11 November community Mass.

Marist Global Network听

Over three days, the Marist Institute launched its Marist Global Network of schools which 今日吃瓜 is proud to be connected. Our College had a special role in creating a video that captures how we as a Marist community are connected to this global family. This network offers an exciting opportunity for staff, students and families as we continue to consider our place in the world and how we through our Family Spirit, can follow in the way of Mary, to make Jesus Christ known and loved.

If you are interested in finding out more about the Network, please head to this website.

Thursday morning Mass

Our Thursday morning Mass continues to grow in support from our families and听students. All are welcome to attend Thursday from 8.10am. Mass听concludes by 8.40am. The next 2 weeks, will be hosted by听Marcellin and Year 4, followed by Mackillop and Year 3. We are also excited to be welcoming some of our Year 2鈥檚 to these celebrations. All families are welcome at this Eucharistic celebration each week.

Newman News Term 4 Week 4: From the Leader of Primary

If you are like me, you will have rejoiced wholly and completely in the news of the safe rescue of Cleo Smith this week. I never thought I would be the type of person to become so emotionally involved in something outside of my own personal world, and yet like many people, I could not help but shed a tear at the wonderful news that she would be reunited with her family. I think this struck a chord with so many people, because within Cleo鈥檚 story, we could all see our own children. My message to students at our morning gathering this week was simple 鈥 go home and hug your Mum and Dad. Tell them you love them and tell them often. We never know what every new day will bring in our world, and moments or stories like this have a way of bringing everything into perspective.

Sometimes we grumble and groan or frustrate each other, but at the end of the day we also love each other too, and we need to take the time to share this with each other and share it often. I am sure there were many students who get an听extra tight squeeze from Mum and Dad this week.

Arts Festival听

Last Wednesday we welcomed all families from across the College to our PK-12 Arts Festival held in the Maris Auditorium. It was amazing to see so many examples of beautiful artwork right across the all the years of our school 鈥 very inspiring for our younger students indeed. What I enjoyed most though, was watching the faces of our younger students, especially when they spotted their artwork, taking photos with Mum and Dad, beaming with pride about their achievements. Another highlight of the evening was the intimate space created by our solo and small group musicians who were playing at the entrance to the Auditorium seating. It was so beautiful to see the smiles on their faces as they played to a very receptive and respectful audience. It encouraged me to share this with all staff and students the next day 鈥 to find the joy in life and celebrate these moments as much as possible.

Socktober

Last Friday, students all over the school wore their brightest and colourful socks to take part in听Socktober听for Mission month听鈥 an event that听encourages students across Australia to kick goals on and off the pitch to make a difference in the lives of vulnerable children in Thailand and around the world. Under the guidance of Mrs Short, our听mini-Marists听collected plastic bags, tape, and string to make their own soccer balls, just as听kids in Thailand would do. They played some games with some of our younger students across the week, culminating in a staff vs听students听game on Friday afternoon. Against all odds, and despite fitness levels that would fail to reach even the most minimum of standards, the teachers reigned supreme winning 1-0.

We owe a big听thanks for Mrs Short and our听mini-Marists听for their efforts over the week, and to听all of听our students who took part in the day so enthusiastically

Year 6 Family Life Incursion听

On Monday of last week, students from Year 6 gathered separately as boys and girls to attend the 鈥楤ecoming a Man/Becoming a Woman鈥 presentation from the Catholic听Marriage & Fertility Services. This is a part of both their Health and Religious Education learning. Students spent time connecting with their own story of听life and听exploring听the changes that create both physical and emotional change. They learned about the听reproductive听systems, and how to care for themselves and others physically and emotionally. Students were encouraged to form healthy relationships with others, and to communicate openly with their parents. This was an important learning experience for students, and it was great to see so many students attend with a positive and mature outlook.

Well听done to听all of听our students for taking part.

Year 4 Excursion 鈥 Child vs Wild听

Last week our Year 4 students endured some听rainy听weather as they embarked on their excursion to King鈥檚 Park to take part in the 鈥楥hild vs Wild鈥 learning experience. Students learned about the fragility and harshness of the Australian bush,听as well听as听the听importance听of respecting and protecting our natural environment, while learning how to explore it safely.听The program also introduced students to bush skills, with activities such as shelter building, finding drinking water, and delivering simple first aid. By all accounts, students had a wonderful time听even听if the rain听did听dampen things a little!

Mathletics 1,000,000 point party!听

This afternoon, the 3 Red class celebrated the amazing achievement of reaching 1,000,000 points in Mathletics this year with a pizza lunch and party. This was a great achievement from the class, as students had to work as a team throughout the year to achieve their goal. A number of certificates were awarded to those students who听 done especially well over the year. A special mention must go to the top 3 mathletes from 3 Red – Leo Goggin, Julian Cameron, and Joel Costley who were also the top 3 mathletes across the school. It was great to celebrate such a fine achievement with the class today!
