Newman News Term 1 Week 4: From the Director of Mission and Catholic Identity

The faith life of our College continues to strive as we look to offer authentic experiences for our students in line with our Vision for Mission: to form good Christians and good Citizens. Our staff and students have continued to reflect on our Marist Theme: Known and Loved 鈥 Dignity for All as we consider how we respond to the current challenges posed in schools through our Marist Characteristics. The following reflection was shared with staff and students on Monday. .

Year 12 Retreat

A different experience for our students in 2022, yet still powerful and life giving. Students engaged in a variety of activities that encouraged them to reflect on who they are, what they value and the type of person they want to be. I wish to thank PCG and other staff who attended the three days and journeyed with our students in the conversation. Particular thanks to Mat Puljiz, Leader of Wellbeing Year 12, Aleisha Bryson, Leader of Youth Ministry & Advocacy, Liam Street, Marist Youth Minister, Donna McFadden, Canteen Manager and the Maintenance Team.

Community Mass

Mass continued in Week 4 and will continue on Thursday morning for particular year groups. This is only open to staff and students at 今日吃瓜. Unfortunately, parents are not able to attend at this time due to current restrictions. We welcome local parish priests who continue to serve our 今日吃瓜 community and offer spiritual nourishment for our community.

Game Changers

Tuesday Week 5, Game Changers commences again for all students in Year 8-12. Groups gather Tuesday afternoon with their mentors and begin their new track for 2022. Project Compassion 2022

The theme for 2022 is .  Caritas is responsible for supporting many communities around the world and Project Compassion is their main fundraiser to support their projects.

During lent we will be joining many Australians in raising money for Project Compassion and the funds raised will help support vulnerable communities around the world to tackle poverty, food security, education, water and sanitation and disaster risk reduction to build a better future for all.

Lent

Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the Church鈥檚 season of Lent. In 2022 Ash Wednesday is 2 March 2022. As a Catholic community, Lent prepares us for the season of Easter, the most important time in the Church鈥檚 calendar. It encourages us to spend time in prayer, fasting and almsgiving and by doing so we are reminded Jesus鈥 death and resurrection. Jesus brought the promise of hope to all people so that we may 鈥淗ave life and have it to the full.鈥 (John 10:10).

Shrove Tuesday

The Catholic Church has a tradition to celebrate Shrove Tuesday prior to Ash Wednesday. Shrove Tuesday is a day to celebrate before we begin the season of fasting. Historically, it has been celebrated by eating pancakes. We will be selling pancakes on Tuesday 1 March across the College to begin our fundraising for Project Compassion and to continue this fun tradition of our Church.

  • Marcellin Sales before school 8:15-8:45
$2 ea or 3 for $5 Maple syrup included
    Eft will be available
  • Lavalla sold during Recess from Lavalla canteen.
$2 ea or 3 for $5 Maple syrup included
  • Marian sold/distributed during class in beginning of the day.
    $2

Ash Wednesday

Ash Wednesday will be celebrated across the College through classroom teachers and PCG teachers. Students will be able to receive ashes following the latest covid advice that was distributed via the Vatican on how to appropriately distribute ashes. Marian and Lavalla students will be celebrating their liturgy at the beginning of the day. Marcellin students will be celebrating during extended PCG.

Confirmation Retreat

On Thursday 3 March, our Year 6 students will be participating in their Confirmation Retreat, facilitated by 24:7 Youth Ministry. This is an opportunity to reflect on what it means to receive the sacrament of Confirmation and how this will impact their life. This is a significant moment in the life of our Year 6 students, and I encourage all our parents to begin the conversation with their child about their sacramental journey.

Newman News Term 1 Week 2: From the Director of Mission and Catholic Identity

鈥淚 am the good shepherd; I know my own and my own know me鈥 John 10:14 and He deeply knows, and He truly loves.

As we settle into a new year, albeit with another topsy-turvy start, the Ministry Team would like to remind us all to Breathe, as we all did so beautifully last year but, also in these uncertain times, that the relationships we foster at 今日吃瓜 must remain true and steadfast.

Our theme this year 鈥 Known and Loved: dignity for all 鈥 clearly conveys that we can love others because we are first loved by God. 鈥淲e love because he first loved us,鈥 writes John (1 John 4:19). This is the life we are invited into. This relational love is the deepest reality of the Christian life. Knowing and loving is the call of being a Marist educator. It is also the call of every parent and, in our communities, we all seek to know and to show love to young people. Following the creed of St Marcellin Champagnat, we Marists have always shown love for our students. But the nature of these times, when our interactions are often limited by the cold interface of Teams, blocked by necessary face masks or staged two metres apart, reminds us to let young people know that they are fully known and loved because then they can be themselves and feel deeply loved for being just who they are.

Year 12 Retreat

The Year 12 retreat is a significant part of the school journey and integral to our Vision for Mission: to form 鈥淕ood Christians and Good Citizens鈥. The retreat aims to assist students in recognising the importance of holistic development and to give further understanding of living life to the full. Students will be given time to reflect on relationships with family, self, others, and God and will be encouraged to contemplate who they are and who they are called to be.

Communication has been sent to families regarding changes to the Year 12 Retreat for 2022 and can be found .

Youth Ministry & Advocacy

St Marcellin Champagnat鈥檚 desire for every child was that 鈥淲e aim at something better鈥 to give them Christian spirit, attitudes and virtues possessed by good Christians and good citizens.鈥 今日吃瓜 seeks to provide opportunities to students and families to live out the Christian mission. Here are some of the ways students can get involved in 2022.

  • Game Changers: Game Changers is a Marist Youth Program facilitated in Marist schools  around Australia, that encourages students to focus on the areas of Leadership, Faith Development, Community and Ministry & Service. The program has three tracks from Year 7-12. Groups gather on Tuesday afternoons, 3:30 鈥 4:30 every second week, with a retreat day each year, as well as camps and excursions in the senior years. If you would like your son or daughter to become involved in Game Changers please contact Aleisha Bryson.
  • Living Marist: Our Christian Service-Learning Program for Years 7, 8 and 9. The program is commences in Term 1 and concludes in Term 3. Students are expected to complete 10 hours of community service during this time. The College will provide opportunities for students, as well as expect students to find their own volunteering experiences.
  • Marist Connect nights: An opportunity for students in Year 11 and 12 to meet with students from St Joseph鈥檚 Northam and Bunbury Catholic College to develop relationships and grow a wider network facilitated by Marist Youth Ministry.

In 2022 we are committed once again to supporting the following organisations:

  • Caritas: Project Compassion and Caritas Fast, students will be involved in fundraising activities during Lent in Term 1 with all proceeds going to Caritas.
  • Saint Vincent de Paul: Blanket Appeal and Christmas Appeal, the opportunity to provide support to people in need within our own community, families are requested to bring in a blanket during winter and food and drink for Christmas hampers.
  • Lifelink: As part of our support of Lifelink, the outreach agency of the Archdiocese, in Term 3 we align our celebration of the Feast of the Assumption with our annual Walkathon.
  • Australian Marist Solidarity: Term 2 we celebrate Champagnat Day with our annual Fete Day. All proceeds on this day go to Australian Marist Solidarity with a focus on the Kuya Centre for Street Children and this year including Timor Leste where the Marist鈥檚 are building a new school.
  • Catholic Mission: Term 4 we raise awareness for Catholic Mission through Socktober. Events associated with this are Soccer-based and pertain to fostering an understanding of the lives of underprivileged in neighbouring countries.

Information will be shared throughout the year.

Thursday Morning Community Mass

Mass will continue in Week 4 in the Champagnat Chapel. Unfortunately due to the current Covid advice from WA Health, families and members of the public are unable to attend. Mass will be open to staff and students only. Thank you for your understanding.

Mini Marists听

Our听Mini Marists from Year 6 connected with the听Kuya听Centre听for Street Children听in the听Philippines. Students had a chance to connect with some of the children at the centre, who have been given an opportunity to be educated and given a second chance at life after听living on the streets without any family support.. It was a timely reminder for our own students about the real meaning of Christmas 鈥 a time of great hope when we prepare for the coming of Christ and find those things that we can be so grateful for in our lives such as our friends and family.

Newman News Term 4 Week 9 : From the Principal

础诲惫别苍迟听

As we count down the days to Christmas, it is a timely reminder that in this period of Advent we take a moment to be grateful for who we are and the community in which we belong.听听This is a time of great blessings, to ponder our year in preparation not only for Christmas but in our aspirations for the year ahead.

Over the last two weeks, we have celebrated our community and the achievements of our students in the Years 7-11 Awards Ceremony, Years 3-5 Awards Ceremony, Year 6 Graduation and the online Primary Christmas Carols.听听Each event highlighted the wonderful family spirit that permeates our College.听听As a Marist school we value each student for what they have contributed to the school and in our witness to their growth as young people.听听2021 has been a successful year and to that end I am grateful for the ongoing support of our families in our collaboration.

Thank you to all our staff for their tireless commitment to creating a school听where students want to be.听听Last week I had lunch with听some听students听in听Year 7 reflecting on their first year of听Secondary听School.听听Each student,听without prompting,听spoke glowingly about their teachers and the difference that they had made in their learning.听听听The common thread in the conversation was that notion that each teacher knew who they were and valued them.

Marist Schools Australia Incorporated听听

An important milestone in the governance of our school will be reached on 1 January 2022 with the incorporation of Marist Schools Australia Limited as our governing body.听听This new entity, established by the Marist Provincial Council of the Marist Brothers, will become the employer of all staff employed in the 12 Marist Colleges across Australia, currently owned by the Trustees of the Marist Brothers (TMB).听听The Association of St Marcellin Champagnat will also be incorporated.

今日吃瓜 鈥 Change in Registration听

All families would have received a letter today regarding the change in Registration for 今日吃瓜.
Should you have missed the SEQTA email, please click here to view.

Affirming Community Feedback听

I received an email from a warden who directs traffic on Hale Road in Woodlands.听听He wrote to inform the College that he had interacted with a number of 今日吃瓜 students each day as they crossed Hale Road on their way to and from school and he wanted to let me know that our students are, without exception, outstanding young people and a credit to their school and their parents.听 He said that it has been a pleasure and a privilege to have this contact.

What a wonderful note on which to end the school year!

So as we conclude the year, we give thanks for each other and for our Marist community.听 I encourage all families to take time to visit their local parish over the Christmas period to celebrate the birth of Christ and the hope and aspiration that his message brings to us all.

With best wishes to all for a very happy and holy Christmas and a peaceful and reflective holiday break.

Newman News Term 4 Week 9: From the Leader of Primary

It is simply amazing to me that we find ourselves at the end of another school year. Almost every family I have spoken to in the last few weeks has remarked on just how quickly time has passed, and how all of a sudden another year is behind us.

On Tuesday evening we celebrated the graduation of our Year 6 students with a beautiful mass in the Champagnat Chapel, and听I imagine for听those families in attendance, this year may have felt like it passed even听quicker than most. When I used to teach in听Year 6, I would remark to my students about the significance of graduation not only for them, but for their parents too. As adults leading busy lives, we tend to听rush through things, pausing听only听to听measure our lives in听the 鈥榖ig鈥櫶齧oments. Watching our kids take their first steps,听their first day of school, and now, their last days of听primary听school. It鈥檚 moments like these听that really make us pause and wonder, 鈥淲here did all the time go?鈥澨齛nd听I鈥檓 sure there are听many听Year听6 families (and听some听others听perhaps) who have been thinking that this last week.

This year鈥檚 Marist theme was听Breathe the听Spirit听of听Life听(Rm 8:2). My prayer for everyone this Christmas season is that we听all find time听to do exactly that. To simple sit and be with our families. To turn off our devices, switch off the emails, and connect with those around us who are most important.听To talk with each other, and perhaps even rediscover each other.听The moments we have together are so precious, and there is nothing more important than making the most of these.

I would like to extend my thanks to听all staff, students, and families for their support this year, and for making 2021 such an enjoyable year for all. I wish everyone a safe and happy听break and听look forward to welcoming you all back in 2022!

Year 6 Graduation听

On Tuesday evening, staff, students, and families gathered to celebrate a beautiful mass for the graduation of our Year 6 students. This was followed an Awards ceremony in the Marist Auditorium, where we recognised a number of students who have worked consistently well over the course of the year. Students also celebrated with a wonderful day out at Adventure World today 鈥 a highlight of the Year 6 calendar for sure. We are very grateful for the work of our Year 6 teachers who helped guide and prepare students for this event, as well as all of the staff and families across the College that supported the event.

The full list of student award winners can be found here.

We wholly congratulate all of our Year 6 students and recognise their contributions to our college not just this year, but over all their time in the primary school. We wish them all the best as they prepare to continue their journey into Year 7!

Year 3-5 Awards听

On Tuesday morning this week, our campus came together in the Marist Auditorium to celebrate all of our major award winners across Year 3-5. There were three awards presented across each of the three classrooms:

Christian Endeavour 鈥 awarded to those students who demonstrate the Marist values in their words and actions; seeking to make Jesus real each day they are here in our community.

Academic Achievement听鈥 awarded to those students who have demonstrated a consistently high level of excellence in their learning; embracing the four pillars of challenge, collaborate,听create听and celebrate to achieve wonderful results, setting a fine example for their peers.

Personal Endeavour 鈥 awarded to those students who show a consistent level of grit, determination,听and hard work in applying themselves to all that they do. These are the students who understand what it means to not only meet a challenge, but to overcome it too.

You can see a full list of our award winners here.听

Also, as part of our awards ceremony, we introduced our new student leaders for 2022. We are delighted to announce those students who听will be taking up leadership positions next year as sports captains and student councillors. You can see a full list of our student leaders here.听听

4 Green Assembly听 听听

Two weeks ago, students from 4 Green came together to deliver a wonderful assembly with a very positive message about sustainability and looking after our environment. The 4 Green class spoke about the importance of looking after our natural resources, presenting information through dance and performance. This is such an important message for our young people especially, as they are the ones who are quickly becoming the stewards of our precious planet. We also recognised a number of merit certificate award winners on the day 鈥 it is great to see so many students finishing the year so strongly!

5 Blue & 5 Red Assembly听

Last week, students of 5 Blue and 5 Red came together to present as assembly item on the different types of governments we might see across the world…including here at 今日吃瓜! Students presented as if they were part of a competition to see which government would reign supreme, and although it looked close for a moment, luckily democracy won the day! Well done to our Year 5 students for delivering such a creative and engaging assembly item. We also celebrated more student success with our merit certificates. Well done to all students who received awards on the day.

Marcellin Champagnat Awards听

We have been very听fortunate听to recognise three outstanding individuals over the past few weeks who have received Marcellin Champagnat Awards.

Chloe Male听– 5 Green听
Chloe has consistently showed compassion,听presence听and care for other students in the class and around the school. During Spelling Mastery, Chloe asked to sit next to another student who she noticed needs assistance and patiently re spells words for them when they get confused. She continuously tries her hardest in all activities and is always finding ways to help around the classroom. Recently we had a new student join our classroom and Chloe has spent every听day slowing down during our class prayers to allow our new student to repeat after her so that they can learn the prayers as well. Chloe is very aware of other students and their needs in and around the classroom. She is always going out of her way to calm down students that she sees upset and often gives up her own things to assist the other student in calming down. You are a听star听Chloe!

Madeline听Faulkner听– 6 Blue听
Madeline听encompasses the Marist Spirit in many ways. Madeline, like Mary, always puts others before herself. She serves others on a regular basis whether it is opening and holding the door for others, wiping down the desks or carrying other students swimming bags when they feel tired, just to name a few. She is empathetic and is always happy to do what is right听in order to听help. She notices when someone is feeling ‘out of sorts’ and always offers her help and a cheery smile. Everyone’s day is brighter when Madeline is around. Another student (Stella) from another class came up to me and said, “Madeline is just such a nice person.” That is how we all feel.听We听could not think of a more deserving recipient for the Marcellin Award.

Ava Di Pietro听– 4 Green听
Ava has been nominated by both her teachers and fellow students. She is a happy, positive influence in the class and consistently seeks out ways to include others in all activities and to highlight their attributes and unique qualities. She is always supportive, helpful, and encouraging and takes the time to make sure that everyone is feeling valued. She leads by example and gives others the confidence to display and use their own talents and abilities. Ava is a ray of sunshine in Four Green and a real asset to the class and to 今日吃瓜.

Environment Summit听

Last Tuesday, students from the 3 Green class represented our College at the Waste Management and Recycling forum hosted by Christine Tonkin MLA. There were a number of representatives from local councils in attendance, as well as the Minister for the Environment, Climate Action, and Commerce; Hon. Amber Jade Sanderson. Our Year 3 students gave a very engaging and fun presentation on how they had been 鈥榮uperheroes鈥 in their efforts to rebuild our garden patch and the small but meaningful things they have been doing this year to create awareness around sustainability and sound environmental practices. A big thank you to Mrs Gray and our very appropriately named 鈥3 Greenies鈥 for all of their support of this event!

Lavalla Cricket Cup听

On Monday this week, Mr Finneran and Mr Martino came down to take part in the first ever Lavalla Cricket Cup. Students from Year 4 battled hard in warm conditions, and had a great time playing an afternoon of cricket. In the end, it was team Martino that ruled the roost. A big thanks to Mrs Tasha Richards for all of her organisation of the day, as well as to our Year 4 students who competed so positively and enthusiastically.

Pizza Pool Days听

This week our students in Year 3-5 have celebrated their final week at school with a wonderful afternoon enjoying pizza and the pool! As I was floating along with our听Year 3 students on Monday听(dominating in the pool volleyball 馃槢), I was struck by just how听fortunate听we are听to enjoy听such amazing facilities at our school, and the wonderful experiences these bring to our students. It was a great afternoon for听all of听our students, and I think teachers might have enjoyed a bit of a splash too!

Transition Day听

Last week, our Year 2 students joined us at the Lavalla campus听as part of their transition over from Marian. Accompanied by听our student leaders, they had a chance to attend one of our听assemblies and听visit and听learn about all the important parts of our school including the Champagnat chapel, the library, and of course the play spaces. Later than afternoon, all students had the听chance to meet their teacher for next year and find听out who would be in their class. There was lots of excitement in the air, with students quickly debating who had the best teachers for next year (spoiler alert 鈥 we think they are all pretty good听馃槉 ).听The feedback from parents听around our transition afternoon was very positive, so we think it might be here to stay for next year too!

Leadership Day听

In week 8, our new student leaders from Year 5 and Year 11 attended a joint leadership workshop in preparation for next year. Students heard from听Brother Tony Leon who presented to us what leadership looks like in the context of our Four Pillars of Learning, as well as take part in some games and activities that allowed us to get to know each other a little better. Students also examined the College鈥檚 vision for Learning, looking at the expectations and behaviours that they see as being most important from our students, as they seek to animate these amongst their peers next year. It was a lovely day out for all students, and we are very grateful to Deputy Principal of Wellbeing, Mrs Pastorelli, and听Student Leadership Coordinator, Miss Cristine Guzzomi for听all of听their support and organisation of the day.

Sing & Strings听

Two weeks ago, many of our听instrumental and vocal听students from across the campus came together to put on a wonderful showcase event. Coordinated by Miss Margaret Goldsmith, students took part in the听Sing听and Strings听evening where we heard from our talented musicians in a variety of solo, duet, and ensemble performances. We also had some students听performing vocally, and the choir took part too. We听are听very grateful for the support of all our music tutors over the year, as well as families who shown wonderful support of our Arts program through their attendance at听events and听encouraging their children to attend all rehearsals. I am already looking forward to our next event in 2022!

Robotics Incursion听

On Monday November 29 our Primary students in the SHINE program participated in a robotics and coding incursion. We were fortunate enough to have Bricks 4 Kids facilitate sessions with听all of听our SHINE students as they built, coded and tested their own creations. Students in Year 1 and 2 built their cricket walkers. The Year 3 and 4 students worked with Mindstorms EV3漏 to build, code and test their creations. The Year 5 and 6 students also worked with Mindstorms EV3漏 and experimented with their coding to create dancing actions and work with light sensors. The students were an excellent example of excellence as they engaged with the instructors,听equipment听and systems. Thank you to the staff that made the day possible: David Nelson, Katya Anderson, Justin Farley, Imogen听Crostella听and the outstanding staff from Bricks 4 Kids.

Christmas Carols听

Unfortunately, due to the forecast of very hot weather for our Christmas Carols evening,听we had to cancel our carols event yesterday. With a predicted forecast of 38 degrees for 5pm we thought it would be safest to cancel, and instead, all classes recorded their carols instead. You can catch this event on our听YouTube听channel by clicking听

Booklists听

In 2022, both Lavalla and Marian Campuses will not have a student booklist.听Teachers will provision the resources for their class via the College鈥檚 internal ordering system.
The only thing parents at Lavalla (Year 3 鈥 6 2022) are asked to provide is a packed pencil case for their child for the beginning of the year. This would include the following items, which can be obtained through whichever stationary supplier you select:
