Workout Wednesday

Mrs Pugh and Miss Sankar have been having a great turn out at the fitness club 鈥淲orkout Wednesday鈥�. Students have been braving the cold conditions and enjoying all kinds fitness related activities; including running, skipping and circuit work. It is such a good way to start your day, so come down and join us at 7.45am on a Wednesday morning for a workout. Make sure you bring your cereal bowl and spoon to enjoy some breakfast afterwards with your friends.

Year 6 IPSHA Winter Carnival

On Thursday 27th June, all Year 6 students will be travelling to John XXIII College to participate in the IPSHA Winter Carnival. Students will play AFL, Netball, Soccer or Hockey against other IPSHA schools. The focus of the carnival is on participation and there are no finals. It is about giving children the opportunity to display skills learnt, promoting fun and enjoyment, encouraging everyone to participate and highlighting the importance of fair play. However, all football matches will be recorded as part of a formal 鈥淒ockers Shield鈥� competition between all 7 football teams. Parents have been sent information about this carnival.

Beep Test Results

The focus in PE lessons for the remainder of the term is fitness. So what better way to test students cardio respiratory fitness than to begin with a beep test! Students were particularly enthusiastic about participating in the beep test and are already keen to improve on their score. Some particularly good beep test scores:

2019 ACC Girls Hockey Challenge

Congratulations to our Senior Girls Hockey Team who backed up last year鈥檚 victory to win the trophy again. It was an amazing effort by all 14 players who took part in this event. The team played 5 round games and scored 22 goals and had zero scored against.

They won their Semi – Final 4 鈥� 0 and then went on to win the Grand Final 3 鈥� 0 against a highly rated Guildford Grammar Team. An amazing total of 29 goals for and 0 goals against from 7 games of 25 minutes duration. Everyone made an enormous contribution, but Elsie Laming (Yr 12) scoring 13 goals was a highlight. Big thank you to Olympic Hockey player Mr Leece for his expert coaching. The girls are extremely fortunate to have someone with his technical knowledge and vast experience leading them. Thank you also to Mrs Muller, Br Paul and Br Terry for their support and guidance on the day.

2019 ACC Boys Hockey Challenge

The Boys went through the preliminary rounds undefeated and advanced to the Finals but were narrowly beaten by CBC in the Semi 1-0. It was a great day of competition and the team gave themselves every chance. Thanks to the ACC and all schools for a great Carnival and thank you Mr Leece and Br Paul for preparing and coaching the team.

2019 Marist Netball Carnival Alice Springs
听

The girls performed extremely well in this year鈥檚 Carnival up against tough opposition. The team finished 3rd in the Challenge Division and 11th overall. They won their final game by 5 goals against Regional Marist College Tasmania. Congratulations to Georgia Condon, Sarena Kriletich and Holli Johnson who were voted as 鈥楶layers of the Day鈥� throughout competition. Thank you to Mrs Fitzpatrick and Mrs Rosher for all of the time and energy put in to best prepare our team and provide such an amazing opportunity and experience for our girls.

1st XVIII Football

The boys have won their way through to the Semi-Finals of the Ross Glendinning Cup. The Boys played a tough uncompromising brand of Football on Tuesday by defeating Kennedy Baptist by 10 goals and look forward to the challenge of hosting the Semi next Wednesday with the winning team advancing to the Grand Final the following week.

Year 9 Outdoor Education Mountain Biking Camp

The year 9 Outdoor Education students participated in their overnight mountain biking expedition during week 7 of this term. The expedition was split into two parts with group 1 riding on Monday and Tuesday and group 2 riding on Wednesday and Thursday in the Dwellingup region of South West WA.

Group 1 was faced with some challenging conditions with heavy rain and cold temperatures. However, they all completed the ride very well and showed great resilience and flexibility in riding over 50km on off road tracks over the two days. The highlights were some long winding downhills and the team building and group cohesion shown throughout the two classes whilst riding.

Group 2 arrived in Dwellingup faced with less rain but colder temperatures. Students were treated to brilliant scenery and biodiversity whilst riding on the Munda Biddi trail and Waterous trail. Every student completed the rides over the two days with great enthusiasm. The highlights were a 2km long single track downhill and the abundance of roasted marshmallows over the fire on Wednesday night.

With Term 2 camps all over, Outdoor Education is gearing up for a busy Term 3 of camps with two mountain biking expeditions, 2 mountain bike day trips, a leadership expedition and a hiking expedition all taking place in term 3 through our Year 11 and 12 General and ATAR courses.

Subject Selection

Outdoor education is looking forward to the subject selection afternoon held on Monday in Week 9. We are excited to possibly see student numbers in outdoor education increase throughout the upper school year groups. Our staff will be on hand to answer any questions you have regarding the subject throughout the afternoon.

 

 

Newman News Term 2 Week 8: From the Deputy Principal Wellbeing Secondary

Over听the past two weeks, students in听Years听10-12 have been busy with examinations while our听Year 7-9 students have been working through assessments in class.听听As we approach the half way point of the academic year, reports are being prepared by staff and we hope each of our students will take plenty of positives from their experiences at the College so far.听听A reminder to parents, you听are able to听access your child鈥檚 assessment marks via SEQTA and reports will also be delivered in this way at the end of term.

Champagnat Day

I wish to thank all students for their participation and commitment to Champagnat Day.听 We commenced the day celebrating Mass in the Gym, with Champagnat Day Awards being announced at the conclusion of Mass.听 A student from each year group was presented with a Champagnat Day Award for their living out the characteristics of St Marcellin Champagnat.听 On behalf of the College Community, I acknowledge and congratulate these students once again: 听Sienna Kampanelli Year 7, Tiana Zito Year 8, Isabella O鈥橰ourke Year 9, Taylor Sadgrove Year 10, Mitchell Harris Year 11 and Maxwell Hinch Year 12.

I take this opportunity to commend the students on their cooperation and flexibility when the day鈥檚 planned activities were cancelled due to inclement weather. Please for more photographs from Champagnat Day.

From the Counselling and Wellbeing Team

Last听Wednesday, the Year 7 and 8 students participated in a Wellness Talk on the topic of Friendships and Peer Conflict听run by听our听Counselling and Wellbeing Team.听 听The session focused on healthy friendships, respect and inclusivity of all peers, and how to resolve conflict in positive ways. Students were encouraged to听interact听and some performed role play scenarios on the Auditorium stage, along with guest appearances by their Leaders of Wellbeing, Mr Woolley and Miss Johnson!听听It is hoped that the Year 7 and 8鈥檚 enjoyed the session, and that they will use this in continuing to develop friendships and interact with their peers in respectful ways.

Year 10 Course Counselling听

Y10 Course Counselling will commence in the final few weeks of Term 2 and extend into the start of Term 3. Students will receive an interview time with a member of staff which parents are encouraged to attend. I would like to wish all of our Year 10 students well during the coming weeks.

Cyber Safety

On Tuesday 11 June our Year 7, 8 & 9 students were visited by Cyber Safety expert, Susan McLean. Susan is 鈥楢ustralia鈥檚 foremost expert in the area of CyberSafety鈥�.听听Serving 27 years as a Victorian Police Officer, she has been awarded numerous awards including The National Medal, the National Police Medal and the Victorian Police Service Medal.听听She works with numerous governments and sporting groups such as the Federal Governments CyberSafety Working Group, Cricket Australia and the AFL.听 Throughout the day, Susan covered topics such as online issues, bullying, cybersafety and on the general use of social media.听听It is hoped that students have taken away a stronger understanding of the online world and are better able to use technology in a positive manner.

On Wednesday 12 June, Susan ran a session for parents at the College.听听Differing from the student presentation, Susan’s parent module focused on making parents aware of the dangers facing young people today and looking at effective parenting techniques that can be implemented.
With the fast pace of technological development, 今日吃瓜 is extremely grateful for the time Susan has spent at the College and we are certain that students, parents & staff have taken away many useful points from her work.

School Trips

In coming weeks, we will see a group of students depart for the Eastern States while another group is heading for New York.

Year 10 students on the Humanities Tour will be heading to Sydney and Canberra before finishing off with some skiing or snowboarding in the Australian Alps.听听 Our Arts students are travelling to New York where they will be visiting some of the wonderful artistic locations and landmarks in New York.

I would like to thank the staff involved in these tours for giving up their holidays and wish the students a safe and memorable trip.

School Photos听

Photos of students at the Marcellin Campus will take place in Week 10 of this term. On Monday 24 June students will receive order envelopes in PCG to take home to parents.听听These envelopes will need to be returned to PCG teachers by Thursday 27 June.听听It is important to note that ALL order forms need to be returned, even if you are not purchasing a photo. Students are reminded that they need to be in correct uniform for these days, ensuring hair and grooming meet College standards.听听Students who fail to meet the standards of the College risk missing out on their photo being taken.

For your convenience, the Marcellin Canteen can now accept payments by credit and debit card at the point of sale. This is in addition to the existing Flexischools pre-payment system and point of sale cash payments currently accepted.

As an Australian Marist community, we give thanks for the life, witness and commitment of the Marist Brothers and those committed to Marist education who have served in our community, and across Western Australia.

Reconciliation Action Plan
听

今日吃瓜鈥檚 Strategic Plan (2017 鈥� 2019), and the 2019 Annual School Improvement Plan identify the College鈥檚 intent to engage our wider community of students, staff and families in the development of our Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP). The RAP, when completed, will serve as a statement and a series of corresponding commitments that we in our own context seek to work towards. The College has engaged the assistance of Ms Christine Sindley to facilitate this process, which has commenced with the formation of a Reconciliation Action Plan Working Party, which comprises students, staff and parent representatives. This group have undertaken a half-day workshop on cultural competencies and awareness, and are now meeting each week on a Tuesday.

We look forward to sharing the key milestones on this important journey as it unfolds.

Remar Red Caravel Day 听(Year 10)

On Wednesday 19 June, the 37 Remar Red Rowers participated in the Red Caravel Day at 今日吃瓜 facilitated by the National Remar Team. The aim of the Red Caravel Day was to strengthen the Caravel, with a focus on Christian leadership, forming a strong Christian community and responding to social justice issues that exist, both on a global and local level. The day was enjoyed by all who participated. Our sincerest thanks to the National Remar Team for facilitating the day, and to Mr Nathan Wear (Red Helm) and Brother Terry Orrell for their support on the day.

Remar Blue Retreat (Year 11)

The Remar Blue Retreat will held at 今日吃瓜 from Friday 21 June until Sunday 23 June, 2019. The retreat offers Rowers an opportunity to explore in detail what it means to live as a disciple of Christ. The program focuses on self-acceptance and various relationships within the students鈥� lives 鈥� specifically with others, themselves and with God. The students will be challenged to become a person of justice, service and faith. Our sincere thanks to those who will facilitate the retreat, including the Remar Ministry Team, Brother Terry Orrell, Miss Genna Spadaccini (Blue Helm), Year 12 Gold Rowers (Sarah Ranieri and Stephen Loreck) and Young Marists Volunteer, Dan Litjins.

Weekly Thursday Morning Community Mass (Champagnat Chapel 鈥� 8.10am 鈥� 8.35am)

All parents, guardians and families across our PK-12 College are invited to attend the weekly Thursday morning Mass. Our weekly 今日吃瓜 Community Mass is an important way that we as a Catholic community seek to nourish and live-out our faith in community with one another.

Australian Catholic Youth Festival, Perth (December 8 鈥� 10, 2019)

In December this year, Perth will be hosting Australian Catholic Youth Festival for all young people. Registrations are now open for Australian Catholic Youth Festival 2019. 今日吃瓜 is looking forward to supporting this important event, which takes place every two years. Students from the College will be invited to participate in this event, and we look forward to the opportunity to showcase Perth to visiting Catholic young people from across Australia.

What is Australian Catholic Youth Festival?

The Australian Catholic Youth Festival (ACYF) is a national gathering of Catholic young people established by the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference (ACBC). It exists to provide young people with opportunities to deepen their relationship with Jesus, be empowered to be disciples in the world today and encounter and celebrate the vitality of the Church in Australia.

Purpose:

The Australian Catholic Youth Festival exists to:

路听听听听听听听听 Provide a high quality formative and experiential opportunity for young Catholics to encounter Jesus Christ, in the context of the Catholic Church in Australia;

路听听听听听听听听 Listen to and discuss the issues and challenges in the lives of young Catholics in Australia;

Women Prompting Change in the Church – Wednesday June 26, 6.00-9.00pm

Catholic women are warmly invited to a free panel discussion with: Theologian Dr Margaret Scharf OP;听听Anglican priest Rev Tess Milne; and Religious Studies scholar Scilla Stack discussing the role of women in the Christian Church and their thoughts on the way forward, followed by an open discussion.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Sunday, the 7th听of July

NAIDOC Week celebrates the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and begins on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Sunday (7 July). This year鈥檚 theme for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Sunday is 鈥淧eace to this house and all who dwell within鈥� and is drawn from Luke 10:1-12 and uses Queenie McKenzie’s artwork (above) as the theme image. The message that NATSICC would like to give you, is to reflect and make time to look for your inner peace in your busy life, and celebrate together with your families, friends and the wider community God鈥檚 message of peace and love for all. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Sunday is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the journey of reconciliation and celebration which we are all called to by Jesus. During NAIDOC Week we are asked to reflect upon our faith鈥檚 call to reconciliation with Australia鈥檚 first peoples and to celebrate their culture and contribution to society and our Church.

 

Year 2 Sustainability Incursion

Bunnings came to visit 今日吃瓜 to help the Year 2’s learn about sustainability. We worked together to plant some winter herbs and a lemon tree. Now the Year 2’s will look after our garden to help grow produce to share in our ‘Fitness Friday’ exchange program.

Primary School Champagnat Day Celebrations

On Thursday 6 June, Catholic Communities and Marists across Australia and 83 countries around the world celebrated the Feast Day of St Marcellin Champagnat, Founder of the Marist Brothers and Marist Education. As an Australian Marist community, we give thanks for the life, witness and commitment of the Marist Brothers and those committed to Marist education who have served in our community, and across Western Australia.听To mark this very special day in the life of the International Marist Institute, our K-12 College community celebrated Champagnat Day across the College on Friday 14 June.

Students from our Marian and Lavalla Campuses joined together to celebrate this special day with interesting buddy day activities and a combined Mass.
