Archbishop’s LifeLink Primary Launch

On Wednesday 5 June, ½ñÈÕ³Ô¹Ï hosted 478 students and teachers from 76 Primary Schools across the Archdiocese of Perth for the annual Archbishop’s LifeLink for Primary Launch. Visitors were welcomed by our Year 6 Student Council, with Ella Rose (Year 6) leading the Acknowledgement of Country, and the Year 5 and 6 Lavalla Dance Troupe sharing their Liturgical Movement piece titled: ‘Amazing’.

St Vincent de Paul Winter Sleep Out

On Friday 24 May, 33 students from the Marcellin Campus (Years 7-12) attended the St Vincent de Paul Winter Sleep Out. Students and staff participated in activities that looked at the facts around homelessness in Australia. Participants learnt that many issues and factors can affect a person’s access to a home, which contributes to the 116,000 people who find themselves homeless in Australia. Students and staff shared a simple meal of soup together before hearing from two Archdiocesan groups, including Mrs Carol Mitchell from the Justice, Ecology and Development Office and Mr Damian Walsh from Catholic agency, The Shopfront. Mrs Mitchell and Mr Walsh spoke about homelessness from two interrelated views, one being justice and the other being practical support and care.

Following a question and answer time, students began a Review of Life, following Joseph Cardijn’s – ‘See, Judge, Act’. To see the issue for what it is, judge it in light of the Gospels and faith and then to come up with actions that individuals and groups can take to address the issue. Before the evening concluded, students and teachers completed the See and Judge sections of the review and collectively agreed to meet again to complete the Act section. Following prayer, students and staff settled down for the night, some choosing to sleep on a thin mat, others sleeping directly on the floor. The short experience helped participants gain a greater understanding of the issues of homelessness and a small insight into rough sleeping. It was a great evening and we thank all of those who participated and volunteered to assist.

Newman Newbies: From the Vice Principal

LISA FOGLIANI, VICE PRINCIPAL

This term, we have continually exposed students to the essential skills of collaboration, creativity and critical thinking which are increasingly important in an age of disruption and change. Discovering how we work with others, co-learning and co-constructing ideas is important in working with others and developing good working relationships.

Newman Parents

The College was very fortunate to secure ‘Australia’s foremost expert in the area of CyberSafety’ Susan McLean to speak at the Newman Parents meeting on Wednesday 12 June. This session focused on making parents aware of the dangers facing young people today and looking at effective parenting techniques that can be implemented. With the fast pace of technological development, ½ñÈÕ³Ô¹Ï is extremely grateful for the time Susan spent with our parent community and we are certain that they have taken away many useful points from her work.

DISA Survey

In 2016, staff, students and parents participated in the DISA Survey. The purpose of the DISA is to provide schools with information on which to base judgements about areas for school improvement. DISA is an online tool that you can use to examine your school’s overall alignment and is comprised of three surveys customised for each of staff, parents, and students. This term, all staff, students and parents were invited to participate in the survey. The data collected will inform the College’s 2019-2022 Strategic Plan.

Champagnat Day
Ìý

Last Friday, our College Community came together to celebrate the Feast of St Marcellin Champagnat, the Founder of the Marist Brothers and the inspiration of Marist education. The great joy of this celebration is in the gathering for prayer and communion with the Secondary School Mass being celebrated by Fr Israel Quirit and the Primary School Mass celebrated by Father Dinh Chinh.

At the conclusion of the Marcellin Campus Mass, a number of long serving PK-12 staff were acknowledged for their committed and dedicated service to Marist education.

Whilst the weather made plans for fun and festivities challenging, we were still able to come together with great family spirit. Friendships were formed amongst our Primary buddies and the Battle of the Bands showcased the gifts and talents of our students and staff from the Marcellin Campus.

Please for more images of Champagnat Day at the Marcellin Campus, and for photos from the Primary School celebrations.

Marist Netball

My congratulations to our netballers who represented the College at the Marist Netball Carnival, hosted by Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Catholic College in Alice Springs.

I had the pleasure of travelling with the team to Alice Springs last Saturday and spent the first few days with them.Ìý As I experienced, and what continued to be reflected throughout the week, was that our students conducted themselves in an exemplary manner, both on and off the court.Ìý The display of great sportsmanship and Marist spirit ensured an enjoyable and memorable experience for all.

The girls played with determination and spirit and performed strongly in the Challenge round of competition. Players Georgia Condon (Year 12), Sarena Kriletich (Year 10) and Holli Johnson (Year 11) were awarded Player of the Day over the course of the Carnival. I extend my thanks to Marnie Fitzpatrick (Coach), Ella Rosher (Manager) and Team Captain Taya Voysey for their support, care and leadership of the team.

Winter Music Concerts

The Winter Music Concerts held this week so beautifully displayed our Vision for Learning ‘Shine through Discovery’, with students showcasing their amazing talents through music, song and the arts.Ìý Both concerts were of a particularly high standard and most entertaining.Ìý I am sure those who attended either or both concerts will join me in congratulating our students on their very fine performances.

Mitchell Bristow

Our Primary families were advised on 14 June that Mitchell Bristow, Head of Primary, has been seconded to St Thomas’ Primary School Claremont as Acting Principal for Semester 2 2019, commencing at the beginning of Term 3.Ìý This is a great recognition of Mitchell’s sound leadership of the Primary school within our PK-12 community.

Champagnat Day

Friday 14th June saw our primary students come together at the Lavalla Campus for Buddy Day to celebrate St Marcellin Champagnat’s Feast Day (June 6th). Wet weather certainly did not dampen the spirits of our Marian and Lavalla students who enjoyed partaking in Marcellin Activities with their buddies in the morning and were still able to enjoy some time outdoors in the afternoon, playing with sport equipment and exploring the animals in the Petting Zoo. The K-6 Mass held in the Gymnasium was a highlight of the day, with the primary campuses coming together to reverently celebrate our patron’s Feast Day with Father Chinh. This was Father Chinh’s first time leading the entire primary school in celebrating the Eucharist and it was a lovely Mass! Ìýto see more photos from the day’s celebrations.

We can’t wait for our next Buddy Day celebrating the Feast of the Assumption!

iPad UseÌý

Parents are reminded that students at Lavalla are only permitted to use their iPads under direct teacher instruction and that students are not permitted to use their iPads before or after school without this direction. All students understand that iPads must travel to and from the classroom safely in their school bag.

Parents are further encouraged to establish and maintain expectations of iPad use at home. A reminder that messaging apps are not required for use at school and therefore parents may choose to remove those apps from student devices. If you do allow your child to utilise these apps, we strongly encourage close monitoring and the implementation of rules around their use. A further reminder that should parents need to get communication to students during the school day, the expectation is this will come via the office where a message will be directed to your child, please do not directly message your child via their device. They will be breaching school iPad expectations if they respond to you during the school day.
