Newman News Term 1 Week 6: From the Deputy Principal Secondary

This week I met with our College Captains, Isabella O’Rourke and Joshua Downes. Under the guidance of Leadership Coordinator, Miss Guzzomi the Year 12 Student Leadership Team have certainly started strong. The enthusiasm for their roles and the commitment to school improvement is sensational and I cannot wait to see their vision become a reality for ½ñÈÕ³Ô¹Ï throughout 2022. This meeting was definitely the highlight of my week, reminding me how fortunate our staff are to work with ½ñÈÕ³Ô¹Ï students who let their light shine in all that they do.

Year 7 Parent Information Presentation & Subject Expo

Year 7 Parent Information Presentation and Subject Expo were made available online last week. The presentation contains important information for the year ahead. I encourage all Year 7 students to watch the video with their families.

Student Use of E-cigarettes:

Unfortunately, reports of students using e-cigarettes (vapes) at school has increased. I reminded students at our online Marcellin assembly on Monday morning, that possession or use of a vape on College grounds or in College uniform is a serious breach of College policies and will result in a student’s enrolment at the College being suspended immediately.

We are committed to the health, safety, and wellbeing of all students at ½ñÈÕ³Ô¹Ï and this behaviour does not contribute to a safe or healthy culture. I also encourage students who may witness this behaviour to speak to the Leader of Wellbeing so it may be followed up accordingly. For further information about e-cigarettes and the health impacts of vaping please

Guild Cross Country

The Guild Cross Country Carnival has been rescheduled to Friday 18 March. Students are permitted to wear their Guild Uniform for the day and are encouraged to put on sunscreen before their event. Sunscreen will also be available at the start of the race. Zooper Doopers will be available for purchase for 50 cents after each race, all proceeds will go towards Project Compassion.

HASS Week

HASS (Humanities and Social Sciences) Week will be celebrated at the College from March 12 – March 20. Students are encouraged to check the notices for more information. Lunch time activities for Years 7 – 9 will occur Wednesday – Friday in the St John Henry Newman Learning Hub.

Secondary Youth Leadership Conference

On Tuesday 16 March, a number of our Year 12 Student Leaders will participate in an online Leadership Conference. Students will have an opportunity to hear from guest speakers and participate in team activities which focus on positive approaches to leadership, creative ways to undertake teamwork and communication and coaching skills.

Year 9 WW1 Artefacts

This week the Y9s have been learning all about WW1 and we were lucky enough to have been loaned some artefacts from the museum to have a look at. Historian Lucy Lane has been brilliant with the students walking them through the significance of each piece.

Year 12 Geography

On Tuesday 8th March, at a very early hour, students studying 12 General Geography ventured off on a field excursion to Cunderdin and Meckering. The towns are located 200km east of Perth, and are the sites of the 1968 Meckering earthquake.

The students were able to experience what it felt like during the earthquake in the ‘earthquake house’ at the Cunderdin museum. Students then headed back to Meckering and were further fascinated to learn more about the earthquake by exploring the bent railway track, crushed water pipe and the old town site. Finally, before heading back to Perth, the students developed their field skills, creating a sketch map of the uplift of the land, which is still evident today.

We were all amazed to be standing on rock, the Yilgarn Craton, that is 2.8 billion years old.

Newman News Term 1 Week 4: From the Deputy Principal Secondary

I would like to thank our staff, students, and families for your ongoing support, understanding and the resilience and flexibility you have displayed this term during these challenging times. Our students and staff have certainly modelled the Marist characteristics of presence and family spirit by walking with each other with love and care at all times. Please be reminded that if you are in need of any support, our Leaders of Wellbeing, College Psychologists and myself are here to help – don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any questions or concerns.

Year 8 & 9 Parent Information Presentations

Year 8 and 9 Parent Information Presentations have been available online this week. Each video contains important information for the year ahead. I encourage all Year 8 and 9 students to watch the video with their families. Links to the videos can be found below:

Year 7 Elevate Education

On Tuesday evening, Elevate Education ran an information seminar with our Year 7 parents. Elevate Education will be working with our Year 7 students in 2022 to deliver targeted study skills. On Tuesday evening Elevate focused on key skills for success such as time management and setting up a study timetable. Thank you to those families who were able to join us.

Elevate has given ½ñÈÕ³Ô¹Ï parents access to the student portal. For further tips and resources, please , select the student portal and enter the password rondo.

During Extended PCG on Wednesday, our Year 7 students had their first workshop with Elevate. This was a Study Skills Kick Start workshop aimed at covering the following skills:

  • Dynamic Reading: How to read a text and pull out the key points, not just summarise every sentence.
  • Note Taking: How to get those ideas the students have extracted from their readings into an organised set of notes that will facilitate effective
    learning.
  • Conceptual Learning: Teaching students how to break the information into its relevant parts as opposed to simply rote learning the material.
  • Independent Learning: What independent learning means and how to get it done.

Elevate will return to work with our Year 7s on Time Management in Term 2.

COVID Mitigation Strategy

Masks:

I would like to thank students for their cooperation with always wearing their masks correctly indoors. At an online assembly with Marcellin students on Monday, I reminded the students of one of the definitions of a close contact; face-to-face 15 minutes or more with an infectious person, where a mask was not worn by the exposed person or the person with COVID-19. With this in mind and to minimise the chance of contracting COVID-19 or being considered a close contact, I have encouraged students wear their masks outdoors if they are sitting with friends, have finished eating and physical distancing is not possible.

From Monday, all students will be required to wear their masks while in line for the canteen.

Remote Learning:

Over the last two week, students have had to access learning remotely for various reasons. If your child is required to work from home in the near future, please click here.

OLNA

To demonstrate the required literacy and numeracy standards for the Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE), students are required to achieve Band 8 or higher in their Year 9 NAPLAN. In instances where this has not been achieved, students are required to complete the Online Literacy and Numeracy Assessment (OLNA) in Year 10, 11 or 12.

There are two rounds each year where students can attempt (or reattempt) the OLNA, meaning there are up to six opportunities before the end of Year 12 to meet the required literacy and numeracy standards.

The OLNA is comprised of three assessments: Writing and Numeracy and Reading. Students may be required to sit one, two or all three, of the assessments depending on their individual NAPLAN results.

The assessment format is as follows:

The first OLNA round for ½ñÈÕ³Ô¹Ï will commence next week

Parents have received a letter directly from the College informing them if their child is specifically required to complete one, two or three OLNA. Students have also received a personalised timetable which outlines the information above.

There are a range of supports available for students as they prepare for the OLNA which include access to an online revision subscription as well as in-class assistance and increased availability of tutors at Homework Club.

If you require any further information about OLNA, please do not hesitate to contact the Director of Transformational Learning PK-12, Jenny Miraudo.

Year 7 Information Presentation and Subject Expo:

The Year 7 Parent Information Presentation and Subject Expo will be made available online to families on Thursday 3 March. The Subject Expo aims to give families information on the various subjects studied in Year 7.

A link will be sent to families on the evening of each presentation and it is encouraged that students watch the presentations with their parents.

School Based Immunisation Program 2022 – Year 7 and Year 10

The Department of Health is offering parents of students in Year 7 the opportunity to have your child vaccinated against pertussis (whooping cough, tetanus, diphtheria, and human papillomavirus (HPV), and Year 10 students the opportunity to have your child vaccinated against Meningococcal ACWY.

Every student in Year 7 and Year 10 will be given an envelope containing information about the vaccination program.  The consent/non consent form and envelope must be returned to the College no later than Friday 4 March.

  • Year 7 (1st vaccination) – Monday 28 March
  • Year 7 (2nd vaccination) – Monday 17 October
  • Year 10 (single visit) – Monday 13 June

Newman News Term 1 Week 4 : From the Vice Principal

The last two weeks have been even busier than usual, which I did not think was possible! Perhaps this is due to, at least in part, teachers, students and families being called to respond to the current frustrating societal covid situation with flexibility, understanding, calmness and acceptance.

Teaching staff have had to look to sustainable teaching practices that allow students to experience uninterrupted learning, should they be called to isolate for a short period of time and learn from home. This is a time-consuming task for a teacher, particularly for those who teach for the full day, with students present in front of them. Likewise, students learning from home have had to exercise greater levels of independence and organisation for the period of isolation. In our Primary setting, our parents may need to step into the role of learning facilitator (whilst also trying to work from home) to see their child through the isolation period. We are thankful for our partnerships with parents, we need each other to successfully navigate the educationally disruptive waters.

In the coming weeks we may need to ask whole classes to isolate in the Primary school or collections of students in the secondary school. The College has continuation of learning plans in place for each scenario. The types of learning that the students will engage in will be dependent on whether the bulk of the class is at school, or at home. Please see our communication from our Director of Transformational Learning, Mrs Jenny Miraudo, on the continuation of learning for each scenario. More information can also be found on the College website under our Remote Learning Plans for each year group.

The College is continuously looking for processes and practices that will support teacher and student wellbeing, as we move more into what can be described as a hybrid learning environment. Our learning platforms of Teams, OneNote, SEQTA and Seesaw will assist us to deliver education to students, regardless of their physical whereabouts. Interestingly, ) undertook a study which investigated the skills that are best learnt in the digital and physical world – independently at home and face to face at school. Admittedly, the results of this study are more relevant for our older students. The results can be viewed below.

We trust that our experiences, whilst challenging, will bear fruit at a future stage and that we can be grateful for the support we have in each other as one Marist educational family. We value simplicity and presence as a community, these qualities are particularly relevant today.

Key Dates

– College events are changing very quickly, and we ask all families check the online calendar frequently.

Review of the Children’s Crossing, Tuscany Way near Mantua Crescent

The above crossing is currently being reviewed by the Children’s Crossing and Road Safety Committee.  Two sets of surveys will be conducted.  Please encourage students to utilise the facility so that a true picture of the school community’s needs may be gathered.

Newman Parents Consultative Committee (NPCC) Meeting – Monday 14 March (Online)

These meetings are convened by the Principal and attended by various members of the College Leadership Team. The group provides an avenue for parent voice and operates as a forum for parents to gain insight into our school improvement plan. The NPCC serves to help advance the best interests of those within our College Community. Whilst policy is determined and set by the College Executive and supported by the Advisory Council, the NPCC is a critically important group in providing input and feedback.  The topics for discussion include the annual school improvement plan and Covid experiences and risk mitigation measures.

A meeting reminder will be sent out to families nearer the time containing the meeting link.  We value and welcome collaboration and feedback from parents and encourage your participation.

Newman News Term 1 Week 4 : From the Principal

COVID-19 Update

The disruption to the 2022 school year has continued with the increased number of COVID-19 cases in the community.  As families are aware, we are working closely with WA Health through AISWA (Association of Independent Schools Australia) in determining procedures for supporting students and staff who test positive to COVID-19.  This has not been an easy time and the challenges presented to our community have been commensurate to an ever-changing landscape.

As per my last communication to families of 24 February (published on the College website), the process for contact tracing and identification of COVID-19 cases has been refined due to the quantum of work required to provide more timely information.  Contact tracing will now be conducted by the College.  To ensure an efficient and effective process, we have created an addition to our College COVID-19 web page so that parents can complete our ‘Reporting Form’ should their child test positive for COVID-19.  I wish to assure families that students who test positive or who are identified as close contacts will be well supported by the College.

I recognise that there has been some frustration in our community but am grateful for your patience and ongoing support.  I am very pleased at the way our students have commenced their learning this year and responded with youthful exuberance and resilience to this crisis.  One of the key pillars of a successful school is a settled environment.  Despite the myriad changes, our students have adapted quickly which bodes well for the term ahead.

As more information is provided by AISWA, we will inform parents and guardians of the impact on our local context.

High Achievers Assembly

On Wednesday 16 February we celebrated our 2021 High Achievers.  Our assembly was planned to be held in the gymnasium with 1130 Years 7-12 students to celebrate our High Achievers of 2021 and our Years 6 and 12 student leaders.  But due to the announcement of new COVID restrictions in WA,.

At the assembly, I spoke of this year marking 150 years of Marist Education in Australia in which the first school class occurred in 1872 at the Rocks, Church Hill, in Sydney.  As part of the 150 years celebrations, all Marist schools were invited to engage with a special initiative, the Marist Alumni Project.  The project has been designed to identify and celebrate significant contributions that Marist educated women and men have made to our Nation over the past 150 years, echoing the dream of Saint Marcellin for Marist education, ‘to form good Christians and good citizens’.  The outcome of the project is the creation of an Anthology of Outstanding Australian Marist Alumni.

I spoke of the significant achievements of some of our past alumni and suggested that one or two 2021 High Achievers, of whom we were celebrating, might also go on to become an Outstanding Alumni in the future.

Please click here to view my speech in full.

½ñÈÕ³Ô¹Ï Council Meeting

On Thursday 17 February the College Advisory Council commenced its meetings for 2022.  At the first meeting we welcomed new member, Greg Wheeler, to the Finance Committee and Advisory Council and look forward to his contribution, given his diverse financial and past student experiences.
The key theme of the meeting was the commencement of the new company, Marist Schools Australia Limited, the newly established entity which has the single focus on the governance and administration of Marist schools, including ½ñÈÕ³Ô¹Ï.

Newman News Term 1 Week 2: From the Deputy Principal Secondary

Welcome to the 2022 school year! I would particularly like to welcome our students and families joining the ½ñÈÕ³Ô¹Ï community for the first time. It has been wonderful to have the students back on campus and they are to be congratulated on a great start to the year. Students have responded well to the challenges and opportunities that a new school year presents, and I am looking forward to the rest of 2022 with hope and excitement.

Year 12 Legacy Presentation

Our Year 12 students kicked off their final year of schooling with a presentation from Brendan Spillane. Brendan was a former teacher and principal and has worked with senior leaders from business, education, and elite sports. Our Year 12 students were fortunate to hear his insights on Legacy. Brendan challenged the students to reflect on the legacy the Class of 2022 plans to leave behind, telling them that legacy is something that each student will have the chance to leave behind, and it is our hope that all students take this chance to leave a lasting mark on the College community.

Brendan spoke to the Year 12 students about the Circle of Influence, a particularly important lesson for the graduating class. He reminded them that throughout the year, there will be things in their circle of concern that are out of their control and encouraged them to be more mindful of the things they can influence.

Brendan left the Year 12s with the following wise messages:

  • Legacy is an action, not a wish.
  • Work from your Circle of Influence.
  • Legacy is built in small moments…so there are not small moments. Use them well.
  • Our personal legacy is a tribute to our quiet heroes.
  • Our group legacy is determined by the actions we take together.
  • Hand Year 12 on STRONG because of who you were together.

Year 11 & 12 Parent Information Presentations

Year 11 and 12 Parent Information Presentations have been available online this week. Transperth School Bus Services

Transperth have notified the College that there are a number of ½ñÈÕ³Ô¹Ï students using the School Bus Services with insufficient funds on their SmartRiders. If your child utilises the Transperth School Bus Servcies, please ensure that they have sufficient funds for their journey.

Please be reminded that all Year 7 – 12 students must wear a mask when using public transport.

Year 7, 8, 9 Parent Information Presentations

The Year 8 & 9 Parent Information Presentations will be made available online on Monday 21 February.

The Year 7 Parent Information Presentation and Subject Expo will be postponed and made available online to families on Thursday 3 March. The Subject Expo aims to give families information on the various subjects studied in Year 7.

A link will be sent to families on the evening of each presentation, and it is encouraged that students watch the presentations with their parents.

Year 7 Elevate Education Parent Session

In 2022, we are excited to offer our Year 7 students targeted study skills through Elevate Education. The Year 7 students will participate in a Study Skills Kick Start Wednesday 23 February, where the seminar will focus on the transition process from primary to secondary education and introduce students to the fundamental skills that they need to be using over the coming years.

An online parent information session will be held on Tuesday 22 February. The workshop aims to equip parents with a number of practical tips to provide effective support for students at home. The parent seminar will cover:

Study environment: Discussion of what an ideal study environment looks like, and how to ensure students are able to maximise concentration.
Technology: What role technology plays in aiding study, and how to ensure it doesn’t become an enormous distraction.

Best practices: Exposition of a number of core skills presented to the students, and signs to look for at home when students are straying from their use.
Q & A

Please register your interest in this seminar .

Year 12 Carpark

Due to ongoing capital development at the College, we are unable to provide student parking on College grounds for the remainder of the term. This will be reviewed for Term 2.

Marcellin Campus Visitors

Please be reminded that all visitors to the Marcellin Campus should enter and sign in at Front Reception. Thank you for your cooperation.

Canteen payments

Students are not permitted to make payments at the Canteen using their phone. From Week 3, the Canteen will only accept payments with a SmartRider, cash or card.

Personal Presentation

Thank you to students and parents for the way in which the year has begun. It was pleasing to see the majority of our students arrive on the first day meeting the College Uniform and Personal Presentation requirements. Just a few reminders for families and students:

  • Students with hair longer than the bottom of the collar must have their hair tied back and clear of the face.
  • Jewellery is restricted to a watch, a discrete cross or religious symbol on a fine, light weight chain.
  • Girls may only wear one pair of plain studs or sleepers, worn in the lower lobe.
  • Girl’s skirts must be knee-length.
  • Students have access to the oval and courts at break times but must wear a hat.

Thank you for your support in ensuring students adhere to the College Uniform and Personal appearance policy. Click here for more information.

Wellbeing Calendar

Every Wednesday, the College runs alternative bell times to accommodate our Wellbeing Program. The activities vary each week and are aimed to meet the needs of the various cohorts and support our College’s PK – 12 Wellbeing approach. The Term 1 Wellbeing Program can be accessed here.
