½ñÈÕ³Ô¹Ï has been competing over the past 2 weeks in the ACC Swimming Age Championships at HBF Stadium. We ended up finishing 6th overall, when considering this is out of 80 Schools, is a fantastic achievement! We are very proud of everyone for their commitment and effort. Many PB’s were broken and no one can question our willingness to give of our best and bring grit and character each day.
Thank you to our outgoing Yr 12’s who have played a major role over the past 6 years in elevating our swimming program back to A Division levels. Special mention to Emily Holland who will leave the College at the end of the year as possibly the School’s best ever swimmer. Among her achievements are; Multiple Guild Age Champion titles, ACC Age Champion titles, School/ACC records, ACC All Star selection and ACC Letters for Swimming (the highest award the ACC can bestow). Thank you Emily for your huge contribution throughout your time at the College and the example and legacy you have left for others to follow.
Although it was a total team effort, recognition must go to the following students who were able to achieve some incredible individual results;
Madelyn Bertolini Yr 7 Age Champion (1st, 5 gold medals!)
Emmett McHugh Yr 7 Age Champion (3rd)
Imogen Boss Yr 10 (Age Champion (3rd)
Emily Holland Y12 Age Champion (2nd)
Jake Paynter Yr 11Age Champion (2nd)
We look forward with great anticipation to 2023 as we have the nucleus of a great team. A significant highlight of this year was our Yr 7’s winning the mixed gender relay which is a great sign for the future. With further training and progress we will be confident of mixing it with the best Schools for years to come.
Thank you to our Coaches Ralph McManus and Ms Clark.
This week the Marcellin campus celebrated Harmony Week. We began the week with an online assembly where our Social Justice Captains, Joshua Lee and Isabella Meyer talked about the significance of Harmony Week in Australia. We were reminded that Australia is a vibrant and multicultural country — from the oldest continuous culture of our first Australians to the cultures of our newest arrivals from around the world. Our cultural diversity is one of our greatest strengths and is at the heart of who we are. It makes Australia a great place to live. Harmony Week is about inclusiveness, respect and belonging for all Australians, regardless of cultural or linguistic background, united by a set of core Australian values.
Throughout the PCG this week students were able to participate in activities such as learning simple phrases such as hello, goodbye, please and thankyou in common languages spoken in Australia or discussing the lyrics and themes of cultural diversity through listening to popular songs. PCGs were also able to participate in a Cultural Diversity Challenge where they were encouraged to complete challenges that allowed them to get an understanding of the various cultural heritages within our College Community. On Friday our students participated in a free dress day, where they were encouraged to embrace the Harmony Week theme through their clothing choices. All proceeds for the free dress day will go to our Project Compassion fundraising
National Day of Action Against Violence and Bullying:
Last Friday the College acknowledged the National Day of Action against Violence & Bullying. This is a day for schools, students and the community to say Bullying. No Way!
The theme for 2022 is Kindness Culture and last Friday students were encouraged to get involved to foster a Kindness Culture by promoting inclusion, respect and community belonging here at ½ñÈÕ³Ô¹Ï. Students were encouraged to wear orange hair accessories, jewellery or socks to help spread the Kindness Culture message.
Everyone has a role to play for bullying prevention and showing kindness can be the first step. Our Wellbeing Captains took over our Instagram page for the day and asked students and staff how they create a Kindness Culture through the following ways:
Tell someone you appreciate their friendship
Really listen when someone speaks
Notice what is important to those around you
Spend quality time together
Offer to help someone
Say something uplifting to someone
These small actions can make a big difference, and it starts with each person promoting a Kindness Culture in person or online.
Year 8 Extended PCG – Week 8
Year 8 students were looking at the 2022 Marist theme ‘Known and Loved- Dignity for All’ in Extended PCG this week.
Part of our reflection was looking at the ways school makes students feel known and loved and some ways we could do this better.  Students reflected on the activities we do that encourage participation, homework club, celebrating people’s achievements but spoke about how Covid has limited some of the things we do such as inter-school competitions.
From there we focused on human dignity through kindness and created Random Acts of Kindness Calendars for the rest of Lent.  The students had a great range of ideas of how to show acts of kindness within their school, family, and neighborhood.
The students are now being challenged to tick off a random act of kindness every day for the rest of Lent, but we hope this becomes a practice they engage in every day moving forward.
Year 7 School Based Immunisation Program 2022
The Department of Health will be at the College on Monday 28 March to vaccinate Year 7 students that have provided their consent form. This vaccination is for pertussis (whooping cough, tetanus, diphtheria, and human papillomavirus (HPV). The 2nd vaccination will be on Monday 17 October.
Child and Adolescent Health Service – Community Health have confirmed no gap is required between receiving a COVID vaccine and this vaccine. Your child does need to be symptom free and well. Families are reminded that you can take your child to your GP should you prefer. All Year 7 students are permitted to wear their sports uniform on this day.
Principal’s Assembly/Easter Liturgy:
On Wednesday of Week 10, we will hold our Principal’s Assembly. We look forward to celebrating the achievements of our students as we conclude the school term. Our Easter Liturgy will be celebrated during this time. The assembly link will be provided to parents in Week 10.

Congratulations to the following Year 11 students who have made it through to the Futures program for their local clubs.
Mitchell Bell
Charlie Robinson
Jaxon Chester
Tom Cossom
Reuban Keane
James Knapton
These young men have been working exceptionally hard over the pre-season for selection into this development program, with their skill and fitness development being significant. There is a lot of excitement around their season and the hope that this is the beginning of really great things for their future football ambitions. We wish this group of Year 11 boys all the best in their upcoming fixtures and we look forward to sharing in their team, and personal successes.
Year 12 Integrated Excursion
On Thursday the 10th of March the Year 12 Integrated Science class attended an excursion to Rottnest Island where they took part in Ecology studies focusing on the many salt lakes and sand dune systems on the island.
The salt lakes cover about 10% of the entire island and represent a harsh environment for many organisms. The Year 12 Integrated Science class spend time measuring various conditions of the salt lakes including pH, and salinity, while also closely observing the organisms which inhabit the salt lake ecosystem. One of the most beautiful features of these lakes is the presence of pink algae which gives lakes their distinctive pink colour.
The Year 12 Integrated Science class also studied the many sand dune systems on the island, completing a dune transect to map how the vegetation and abiotic features of the dune system changed as we moved away from the beach.
Rhyley’s Ride for Canteen
Our Year 11 Romero student, Rhyley Wake, completed a 370km from Perth to Busselton un support for Canteen. Rhyley raised $549 for the Life Cycle for Canteen which supports young people with cancer. This is an outstanding achievement, and we are so proud of Rhyley’s commitment to, and support of those within our community that require much needed support.
Last Friday was the National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence. The theme for 2022 is Kindness Culture. By building a Kindness Culture together, we can promote inclusion, respect and community belonging for all students in schools across Australia. This week we celebrated Harmony week, the theme is Everyone Belongs. Funds raised will be donated to Project Compassion.
This theme of Everyone Belongs has a striking alignment with our Marist theme for 2022. ‘Known and Love, Dignity for All’
This week also saw students competing in the reformatted Associated and Catholic Colleges (ACC) A Division Swimming Carnival at the HBF Stadium. Congratulations and thanks to staff and our Year 7 to 12 Swimming Team, who under COVID-19 constraints, managed to continue with their training in preparation for the wonderful efforts they displayed in the pool.

Welcome to autumn! Thinking about autumn can bring about enjoyable thoughts of amber leaves, cooler temperatures, and pretty scenery. Autumn, more than any other season, is a season of change and transformation. The symbolic associations of the leaves falling alongside the temperature, hints to us that letting go is an inevitable process in the seasons of life. The symbolic associations of autumn are a strong reminder that mother mature has an enormous influence on our lives. The disruptions of the last two weeks have continued to challenge our entire community. The constant change and impermanence of the situation are stark reminders of the importance of embracing the Marist characteristics of family spirit, presence, and simplicity.
I have been amazed by the resilience of our students, staff and families in responding to change. Resilience can be defined as the capacity to recover from difficulties. Resilience is not a bobo doll, where you are pushed down one minute and spring up the next. Rather, resilience is more like climbing a mountain trail, without necessarily knowing the direction. It takes endurance, time, faith, patience and most importantly, support from the people that surround you. Setbacks are inevitable, but the joy of reaching the top of the mountain and celebrating together by looking back, makes the journey worthwhile.
As we reflect on what has been the first half of Term One, for our school, WA and the world, we have a sense that our resilience is being developed and stretched. Through collaboration and challenge, we do have faith that we will be able to celebrate our journey and the gifts of resilience at a future point. This week was a turning point for the schooling guidelines for those identified as close contacts of COVID cases, whereby staff and students who are not household close contacts can return to school under certain conditions. The College will continue to provide online learning options for those students who are household close contacts remaining in isolation.
Please check our website regularly for our COVID updates.

The last two weeks have seen the world change again with the conflict in Ukraine and the natural disaster in the Eastern States. It is difficult to imagine the trauma and tragedy that has resulted from these events. The Marist theme for 2022 Known and Loved Dignity for all invites us to reflect on the beauty of human life. The privilege we have in our country is that war and destruction of life is not on our doorstep. However, it is important that we as a community recognise our place in the world and that we offer our ongoing prayers and thoughts for this community.
Our Brother and Sister school in Lismore, Trinity College, has been devastated by the floods of northeast NSW. The school is uninhabitable and there is limited prospect of students returning in the short term. Through the Marist Fundraising Appeal, the College has been able to actively contribute funds to supporting this community in their endeavours to restore teaching and learning onsite (please see Ministry section for more detail). Thank you to everyone who donated to this appeal.
Ms Julie Ryan, Marist Schools Australia Regional Director
We were most fortunate to have received a visit from Julie Ryan this week, her first visit to Perth since May 2021. The purpose of Julie’s trip was to visit the school and meet with the College Leadership Team, staff and students. In addition, Julie and I met with the Executive Director CEWA, Dr Debra Sayce and Vicar for Education and Faith Formation Archdiocese of Perth, Fr Vincent Glynn, to discuss the College’s position with Catholic Education WA and our role as a Catholic school within the Archdiocese of Perth.
Julie has recently confirmed her intention to conclude in her current role at the end of June 2022 and commence richly deserved retirement from full time work. Her support of ½ñÈÕ³Ô¹Ï has been untiring over the past 5 years ensuring visits to the West 3-4 times per year. We look forward to farewelling Julie as a College at the end of Term 2.
COVID-19 Update
The disruption caused by COVID-19 in our Community persists as case numbers increase in the wider community and changes to social measures and contact tracing evolve. Please click here to view the College’s latest update.
I wish to commend the students for their resilience and adaptability as changes to their day-to-day life occur. The wearing of masks of our Primary students has been embraced and I thank families for supporting the College’s enacting WA Health regulations as they are rolled out.
The College now has a dedicated COVID-19 team dealing specifically with COVID-19. An email address has been set up to enable families to send any queries or report a positive case to our team through this email – covid@newman.wa.edu.au
Events
Although many restrictions have been placed on events so far this term it was wonderful to see today students in action at our Years 3-6 Faction Swimming Carnival. Our students, over and over again, have risen to the occasion and continue to display a strong spirit, passion and commitment to their school.
