Newman News Term 4 Week 9 2020: From the Leader of Early Childhood

The past two weeks have seen lots of excitement in classrooms over the impending celebration of Christmas. It is lovely to see the children’s focus being centred on the notion of 鈥榞iving鈥 rather than 鈥榬eceiving鈥. Christmas truly is an opportunity for us to teach children the joy that comes from bringing love and happiness to others.

You may have noticed the installation of the 鈥楪iving Manger鈥 in the Marian foyer. This initiative is to promote the true meaning of Christmas amongst our students. Each time a student is caught doing something for someone else, they were given a piece of hay to add to the manger. The hope is that by Christmas, the Giving Manger will be filled with all of these good deeds, ready for baby Jesus to lay upon.

Staff Farewells

We wish both Mrs Pauline Murphy and Mrs Jan Robertson a very fond farewell as both will be retiring at the conclusion of 2020.

Mrs Robertson will enjoy some well-deserved downtime with her husband and no doubt some rounds of golf. Mrs Robertson has been a welcoming face and source of knowledge for staff, families and students at the Marian Campus reception for the past 16 years. Her wealth of knowledge and the support she provides to everyone is going to be sorely missed.

During her 20 years at 今日吃瓜, Mrs Murphy has led classes of students in Pre Primary, Kindy and most recently, Pre Kindy. She has been an active member of the Marist Association and is a living example of the Marist characteristics; particularly 鈥淧resence鈥 and 鈥淚n the Way of Mary鈥 which is demonstrated through the nurturing learning environments that she fosters and Christ-centred approach to education. We know that she will thoroughly enjoy this next chapter of her life and will savour her new role as Grandmother in 2021.

We also thank Mrs Susan Kadak (Year 1 Blue teacher), Mrs Avani Sheth (Kindy Red EA) and Mrs Natalie Thompson (Kindy Green EA) for their hard work and dedication to our students, as they leave 今日吃瓜 to move onto new positions in 2021.

Pre Primary Christmas Nativity

Last Friday we celebrated a beautiful liturgy centred on the Christmas Nativity story. The Pre Primary students led us in song and action through the re-telling of the birth of Jesus. A very big thank you to the Pre Primary teaching team and students for all their hard work in preparing this beautiful and meaningful liturgy for us. We are also grateful to Fr Kaz for leading the liturgy and to Mrs Majstrovich and baby Maisie who took on the role of baby Jesus beautifully.

Swimming Lessons

It was fantastic to witness the enthusiasm and perseverance of our Years 1 and 2 students as they undertook their swimming lessons in the College pool.

From all reports the students had a wonderful time and displayed excellent listening skills and a 鈥榗an-do鈥 attitude that challenged them to achieve their best.

Families should have received their child鈥檚 swimming certificate via email. If you have not received it as yet, please contact the Newman Swim Club via lessons.nchswimming@gmail.com

End of Term Celebration

To celebrate the end of what has at times been a challenging year, we held a 鈥楩un Day鈥 for all Marian students today.

The day commenced with our celebratory Year 2 assembly in the undercover area. The assembly marks the end of our Year 2 students’ time at Marian and was an opportunity to reflect on all the wonderful moments they have shared during their time on the Campus. It was also a chance for us to wish them well as they transition to the Lavalla Campus.

After morning tea, there where several inflatable water slides for the children to enjoy, as well as a water pistol zone, bubble blowing station and some sprinkler fun.

The day finished with a range of Christmas movies being screened across the Campus.

Lost Property

Please check the lost property area for your child鈥檚 belongings prior to the end of the school year. Any items remaining at the conclusion of the term will either be donated to charity or disposed of.

Newman News Term 4 Week 9 2020: From the Leader of Mission and Catholic Identity

As our College year comes to its conclusion, the season of Advent is alive and well. The theme of Advent is preparation for the coming of Christ into the world. The four weeks leading to Christmas we reflect on Hope, Joy, Peace and Love. This coming Sunday we begin to reflect on Joy. Pope Francis has had a lot to say about joy and constantly reminds us that joy is a sure sign and the attractive and compelling fruit of an authentic Christian. This Christmas let us seek to encounter the presence of God so we become a living witness of joy to the world and to our families and friends.

All families are reminded that this is a compulsory event for K-12 students. More information will be sent out in the new year.

Sacramental Program 2021

The Sacramental program will be commencing in Parish communities in January. The Sacraments are facilitated by the Parish for children who have been Baptised Catholics and are preparing for the Sacrament of Reconciliation in Year 3, for First Communion in Year 4 and for Confirmation in Year 6.

As 今日吃瓜 is not a Parish school, parents will need to approach their Parish to enrol their child to receive Confirmation, Communion and Reconciliation. Information regarding the Sacramental Program and Parish contact details can be found on the College website.

If parents have any queries concerning the above, please contact your parish or the Religious Education Coordinator Primary, Jane Short,鈥 jane.short@newman.wa.edu.au

Altar Server Commissioning

Years 5 and 6 students were commissioned to serve as Altar Ministers by Monsignor Kevin Long. They underwent a two week training program that consisted of four sessions with Mr Diamond, Mrs Short and Mr Martino. The program discussed the purpose and responsibilities of the Altar Minister. Students rehearsed the parts of the mass and became more familiar with the symbols and signs that are associated with this most important celebration. We are very pleased to have 11 students who can now attend the Sacred Liturgy and also in their own Parish Communities.

Year 12 2021 Student Leaders Forum

On Monday 30 November, the Year 12 2021 Student Leadership group gathered for a forum with Matt Angus, reflecting on purpose and vision. Thank you to Mrs Rebecca Bramanto and Mrs Carla Pastorelli for their leadership of the group and Matt Angus for facilitating this experience with our students. Ten Students from the Leadership group will have an opportunity to extend this experience when they attend the Marist Youth Leadership Forum at the beginning of the school year in 2021.

Year 10 River Cruise 2020

The Year 10 River Cruise has been one of, if not the most anticipated event on the Year 10 calendar this year. COVID threw a spanner in the works earlier this year, with the potential that this event could not go ahead, but thankfully we were able to get onto the boat and celebrate what has been an eventful but a successful year for this cohort.

Students really committed to the theme: Popular Culture Icons and staff and crew on board were very impressed with the effort and execution of their costumes. The 10s spent the night dancing away on the boat together as a united cohort. It was very special to see the sense of unity, cohesion and togetherness throughout the night. All staff involved were so impressed and proud of the way in which this cohort of students presented and conducted themselves on the night.

A special thank you to the staff who accompanied the 10s on this social event and their wholehearted commitment to their costuming! It really made the night a great success.
