Wellbeing week for our students,聽gave聽them the聽opportunity to be involved in various activities聽that聽highlighted聽the importance of our 4 themes,聽Healthy, Connected, Present, and Gratitude.聽聽On Friday our staff聽will come together聽to聽hear聽Brendan Spillane,聽an Australian Educator, speaker,聽and coach,聽facilitate聽a workshop on聽鈥楾he Wellbeing Challenge of Complex Times鈥櫬燼nd will focus on our personal wellbeing and our impact on others.

Speak Up Awards

今日吃瓜 is once again delighted to have representation at this event sponsored by the Grand Lodge of WA Freemasons.聽聽The program endeavours to provide young students with the opportunity to learn, develop and practise public speaking skills.聽聽聽Year 6 students, Harry Dolan, Liam White and Isabella Crisona will attend the heats on Tuesday 17 August. Please join me in wishing all participants the best of luck with the delivery of their speeches.

Lavalla Music Night 鈥� Tuesday 17 August, 6.30pm

The evening will consist of performances by鈥痵tudents in鈥痀ears鈥�3-6 enrolled in the instrumental program,鈥痠ncluding the鈥痠nstrumental鈥痑nd鈥痸ocal鈥痚nsembles,鈥痑nd selected soloists.鈥疨arents and friends are invited to attend this free event. No tickets are required.

Artist in Residence 鈥� Community Workshop 鈥� Wednesday 25 August, 6.00pm

The College is pleased to welcome acclaimed Western Australian textile designer Tanya Cain-Abbs as part of the 2021 Artist in Residence Program.
Come along and enjoy a workshop with Tanya to learn the technique聽Shibori聽(a Japanese manual resist dyeing technique which produces patterns on fabric). All materials provided. Limited positions are available. No experience necessary.

This is a unique opportunity to engage with one of Western Australia’s most acclaimed artists.

The workshop will run for approximately 2 hours at a cost of $50pp. (RRP $160pp)

Uniform Shop Purchases

Please be reminded that at the commencement of Term 4 2020, the Uniform Shop was no longer accepting cash.聽聽The Uniform Shop accepts all major credit cards and EFTPOS and operates a successful lay-by system with a small deposit. We鈥痙o not鈥痑ccept American Express.
The Uniform Shop also accepts phone orders and payment (from parents) for collection by students.

Code of Conduct

The Keeping Safe Child Protection curriculum is a program that spans from 3 years up to Year 12.聽 Our College delivers this curriculum during classroom teaching, and through the Wellbeing Programs and Health curriculum.

As a Catholic community we are committed to educating the whole person.聽In order to聽do this, we need to ensure a safe, supportive and engaging environment. The basis for this environment is that all in the community model what healthy, respectful relationships look like. The Code of Conduct is the definitive guide to the behaviours we want to model to, and expect from, our children and young people. We want to create a culture that assists our children and young people on their learning journey. We can only achieve such a culture in partnership with all who participate in our community.聽The Keeping Safe Child Protection curriculum is a program that spans from 3 years up to Year 12.聽 Our College delivers this curriculum during classroom teaching, and through the Wellbeing Programs and Health curriculum.

A reminder to all families that the Code of Conduct can be accessed via the College website. The Code is mandated by Catholic Education Western Australia and the application of the code extends to all staff, students, parents, guardians, caregivers and volunteers.

Any perceived breaches of the Code can be discussed with a member of the Senior Leadership Team. As always, if students ever need support, they are encouraged to contact their Leader of Wellbeing, a College psychologist, Counsellor or classroom teacher.

The Code seeks to value the dignity of every person, foster positive relationships, ensure聽confidentiality and accountability and supports professional boundaries. Events held during school hours, and聽those聽College associated聽events outside of school hours are also supported by the Code of Conduct. Highlights from the Past Two Weeks聽

Marcellin staff have enjoyed welcoming our students back to Term 3. I am very pleased with the positive way our students have commenced the school term, prepared for another exciting term with many opportunities for our students to let their light shine. This term is the final term for our graduating class of 2021. It is my hope that our Year 12 students make the most of their final weeks at 今日吃瓜, setting an example of perseverance, determination, resilience and always striving to achieve their personal excellence in all aspects of聽College聽life.

Parent Teacher Interviews

Thank you to all parents, students and families for the way you engaged in last week鈥檚 parent teacher interviews. Working collaboratively with our families ensures positive educational outcomes for our students and it is important that students take on feedback with a growth mindset. While the College offers formal interview times throughout the year, parents are encouraged to check SEQTA regularly for results and feedback and are also welcome to contact their child鈥檚 teacher to discuss the progress of their child鈥檚 learning.

Year 11 Leadership Day and Dinner Dance

On Friday 23 July, the聽Year 11 cohort聽celebrated the end of a very successful Semester聽1聽with聽the Student Leadership Day. Students had presenters from Alpha Motivation lead them in a range of group work challenges and activities which helped to build leadership skills and strengthen their bonds as a year group. Dr. McCrory, Mrs. Pastorelli and Mr. Martino also addressed the themes of Servant Leadership and Marist Leadership. This day signified the beginning of the groups journey as College Leader鈥檚 and was the perfect way to come together after the challenges of Semester 1.

Later that evening (and with much excitement!), the annual Dinner Dance was held at AQWA. Students were able to explore the aquarium before heading into the spectacular function room. The students looked incredible and danced the night away, taking many photos, while enjoying good food, great music, and even better company. The Donut Wall and Mr Diletti鈥檚 dance moves were a big hit!

I would like to thank all Year 11 students for their engagement on the day and the outstanding way they represented both themselves and the college.

Big Science Competition

In May this year, the Big Science Competition was held. The Big Science Competition is a聽50 minute, multiple choice competition testing scientific knowledge, critical thinking and聽problem solving聽skills. Questions are set in real-life, contemporary contexts, making them relatable and interesting. To receive a High Distinction, a student must perform in the top 5% of all competitors. I would like to congratulate Scarlett Jones, Year 8 on receiving a High Distinction this year. Scarlett was recognised for her achievements at the Principal鈥檚 Assembly this week.

Athletics Carnival聽

The Guild Athletics Carnival will be held on Thursday 5 August at the State Athletics Stadium, Claremont. We are looking forward to a great day of competition. Students are to make their own way to and from the stadium. If this is not possible, there are limited places on a bus that will depart from and return students to the College.

School Parking

I would like to remind parents and families to use the drive through/drop off system and designated parking on the Marcellin campus for school drop off and pick up.

At the end of the day, all students walk to the car park area and wait for parents to pick them up from the designated drive through/pick up area or the park/pick up area. Students who use public transport need to assemble at the assembly points on Tuscany Way where they will be supervised by teachers as they board the relevant bus.

Parents are asked to mindful of residents in the area, obstructing traffic and student safety during school drop off and pick up time. Parking in No-Standing Zones along Tuscany Way or Empire Avenue is not permitted and residents are within their rights to call the council ranger if cars are parked inappropriately.

Year 11 students聽have the opportunity to聽apply for the聽UniReady聽Program for 2022.聽UniReady聽is an alternative (non-ATAR) pathway to聽University. By completing聽UniReady聽in Year 12, students will have the opportunity to enter University with an ATAR of 70.

Year 12

University applications open (TISC)

As of 19 April, Year 12s can apply for a place at University in 2022. In Term 3, all Year 12s will be provided with detailed information on how to apply via TISC.

There is no rush to apply and students will not miss out on a place at University. It is better to take your time and think carefully about the right course for you.

Closing dates are 30 September (for Medicine/Dentistry) and 21 December (all other courses).

University Early Offers

Western Australian universities are publishing their Early Offer programs for students entering university in 2022. Please see below for details:

  • Curtin University

    Offer conditional on attaining the necessary ATAR for that course.
  • Edith Cowan University (ECU)

    Offer conditional on attaining the necessary ATAR for that course.
  • Murdoch University

    Unconditional offer even if you don鈥檛 achieve the necessary ATAR for that course. However, students must meet any subject prerequisites.
  • Notre Dame University

    Unconditional offer but also includes an interview and consideration of non-academic achievements.
  • University of Western Australia (UWA)

    Unconditional offer if students have a high enough predicted ATAR (predicted ATAR +3 for courses below 92 and +1 for courses above 92). Otherwise the offer is conditional on attaining the required ATAR for that course.


Thinking of studying Medicine or Dentistry next year?

If you are in Year 12 and thinking of studying Medicine or Dentistry next year (either at Curtin, or via direct pathway to UWA) you must sit the Undergraduate Clinical Aptitude Test (UCAT) this year.

The dates for UCAT testing 2021 are:

  • 1 July: Testing begins
  • 11 August: Last test date

You can find out more about the UCAT at or you are welcome to book an appointment to talk to me. There are many different ways into Medicine and Dentistry so come and ask if unsure.

Assumption Day Celebrations

Our K-12 Community will come together to celebrate the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Patronal Feast of the Marist Brothers on Tuesday 10 August.聽 Information has been sent home to all families providing specific information for Marian, Lavalla and Marcellin students along with the proposed schedule of the day.

Newman Parents Consultative Committee Meeting聽聽

The next meeting is being held on Monday 9 August, 7.00pm in the Auditorium Studios.

The NPCC meetings, convened by the Principal and attended by various members of the College Leadership Team, is a representative group, voice and forum to gain insight into our school improvement plan and to discuss school concerns. The NPCC serves to help advance the best interests of those within our College Community. Whilst policy is determined and set by the College Executive and supported by the Advisory Council, the NPCC is a critically important group in providing input and feedback.

Nationally Consistent Collection of Data (NCCD)聽聽

Teaching staff across the College participated in professional learning to increase their knowledge and understanding of the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with a Disability. This ensures that all students have access to a quality learning experience at school and teachers can provide adjustments for students based on professional judgement, together with medical and professional diagnoses. I extend my thanks to Mrs Sarah Pagett, Learning Support, and the Diverse Learning Team for supporting staff in understanding this important resource and process.

Newman News Term 3 Week 2: From the Leader of Early Childhood

Highlights from Past Two Weeks聽

Welcome back to Term 3! It has been lovely to return to school and see so many happy little faces, eagerly entering the school for what is shaping up to be a very busy term. Amongst this busyness, there are lots of exciting things happening which we can鈥檛 wait to share with our students. It has been wonderful to have our Pre-Primary students take the next step in their聽transition into independence at school, by joining the Year 1 and 2 students in the Undercover Area each morning to start the day.

I was fortunate enough to attend a conference earlier this week, and hear renowned Educational Researcher, Pasi Sahlberg present. One of the themes Pasi spoke about was 鈥楶lay Deprivation鈥�. Despite research clearly indicating the importance of play in children鈥檚 learning and development, let alone in their social and emotional well-being and development, we are continuing to see an attitude where it is thought that children are too busy to play. It was affirming to hear that many of the commitments we have made at 今日吃瓜 towards early education, align with the messages that Pasi discussed. I urge you to make time for your children to play when they get home 鈥� our homework policy in early childhood allows for this too, in ensuring that our littlest minds have the time and space at home to rest, and engage in meaning.

Parent / Teacher Interviews

Thank you to parents who attended meetings with their child鈥檚 teachers last week. The home and school partnership is essential to educational success.聽These meetings are a fantastic opportunity to meet with parents and discuss聽each students progress and their goals moving forward.

Year 1 Red Assembly聽

A massive thank you to Year 1 Red and Miss Sarah Francia for their聽informative assembly item about adventures to outer space.聽I loved hearing about the stars, moon and planets that are in our solar system and Astronaut Charlotte certainly got to enjoy some wonderful adventures.

Special Thanks

A special thanks was extended at this morning鈥檚 assembly to Mr Chris聽Hazebroek聽who聽provided some significant assistance during the school holiday period, when our Marian Hall flooded. We are very grateful for the Marist Family Spirit that he displayed in assisting聽Mercycare聽staff with minimising damage and flooding.

Athletics Carnival

We are very excited to announce that this year, our Athletics Carnival will be celebrated withal primary students on the same day. Students in Pre-Primary to Year 6, will come together on Friday 10 September to participate in a range of athletics events. Mrs Lara聽Vlahov聽and Mrs Tash Richards are busy preparing all the details聽for the day, which will be shared with families closer to the event.

Family Fun Friday

Commencing next Friday, we will have a group of Year 7 and 8 students leading Friday morning activities across the Campus for our Marian students.聽Please come down for an 8.20am start each Friday morning, and聽encourage your child to join in one of the many activities offered across the campus.

A coffee van is available each Friday for parents to purchase a hot beverage and聽get to know some聽members of our community.

Newman News Term 3 Week 2: From the Acting Leader of Mission and Catholic Identity

St Vincent de Paul Winter Sleepout and Blanket Appeal聽

From Monday 19 July to Friday 6 August, in the lead up to our Winter Sleepout, we are asking students to donate a blanket for the St Vincent de Paul Winter Appeal. Your donation can help provide blankets and warm clothing for a family experiencing homelessness. Large collection baskets will be located in the entrance of the Chapel聽on the Marcellin Campus, and in the Office Administration area at聽Lavalla聽and Marian Campuses.

On Friday 6 August students in Year 7 鈥� 12 have been invited to participate in the St Vincent de Paul Winter Sleepout. For those students who have expressed interest in attending this event, a Consent2Go will be sent home to their families with more information.

Assumption Day 鈥� Lifelink聽

On Sunday 15 August, the Catholic Church celebrates the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. On this Feast, Catholics traditionally celebrate Mary going to heaven. The tradition is that 鈥楪od took Mary, body and soul, to heaven after her life on earth had come to an end鈥�.

This Feast Day was chosen for the Marist Brothers at the time of their foundation by Saint Marcellin Champagnat, the founder of the Marist Brothers and Marist Education. As one of 53 Marist schools across Australia, the Feast Day of the Assumption is an annual opportunity for all members of the 今日吃瓜 community to gather, give thanks, and to celebrate our shared Marist identity.

Students across all campuses will celebrate Assumption Day on Tuesday August 10. The day will commence with a whole school Mass, followed by a聽Lapathon, and a Buddy Day for the Primary students. We will be raising money for a local charity called聽Lifelink. More information about this event has been sent out to families.

Thursday morning Community Mass

Our Thursday morning community Mass is a wonderful way to begin your Thursday and come together as a community. Each week a different Guild and primary Year group will lead the celebration with one of our local priests who support of College. All families and students are invited to attend this weekly celebration. Please note there will be no community mass celebrated on August 5 due to the Marcellin campus Athletics Carnival.

On Tuesday July 27, our Gamechanger students from聽Year 7 鈥� 12 participated in a leadership workshop where they thought about what characteristics make a great leader and what it means to be a servant leader. Thank you to Liam Street from Marist Youth Ministry for running this session.
