ACC Athletics Carnival

Congratulations to all the athletes who represented 今日吃瓜 in the recent ACC Athletics Carnival. The hard work and dedication of both students and staff really paid off with Newman ending the day in second place overall in A Division 鈥� a fantastic achievement. This is the College best achievement in over 30 years and the effort put in by staff and students cannot be understated. Particular thanks go to Matt Connell, Tom Williams and the wider PE Team for their dedication, coaching and organisation of the event.

Year 12 Last Week

The Year 12鈥檚 participated in a range of different activities across their last week of school. There was dodge ball, dress as what you wish to be when you grow up, the famous water slide and the farewell assembly. All activities were designed to celebrate the contribution the Year 12s have made to our College. The farewell assembly was an outstanding celebration of the Class of 2022 and provided an opportunity for students to reflect on their time at the College. The Year 12s left the Gym with a guard of honour formed by students in Years 3-11. This was a fantastic celebration of the Class of 2022. We wish them all the best as some of them now undertake ATAR exams before we officially farewell them from the College on Wednesday 19 October.

Year 12 Ball

After delays due to Covid earlier in the year, and a late change of date because of the extra public holiday, our Year 12 Ball finally went ahead on Wednesday evening.

Students looked stunning as they arrived at Frasers in Kings Park for a night of friendship, fun and food before getting up to dance the night away.

It was a joyous and fun-filled evening that the Year 12s will remember for a long time. Special thanks to Matt Puljiz for his help in organising this event and supporting our Year 12 students during their final year at the College.

After joining the leadership training program in Year 11 and completing the application and selection process, our new Student Leaders were introduced to the school during Assembly on Wednesday.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

What an amazing production! From the acting to the orchestra, the sets to the costumes, this was an outstanding performance. Involving over 60 students from both Marcellin and Lavalla campuses, the show really did have to be seen to be believed! Despite the delay brought about by covid, we are so lucky that we were able to put this masterpiece together.

Congratulations to all the talented students who took part in the production including those who helped behind the scenes to ensure it鈥檚 success. Particular thanks to all the dedicated staff who gave their time and skills to assist, to the Director, Dixie Johnstone who put together a masterful show and Yvonne Weiss Leader of Learning Arts, who guided and supported her team throughout all the changes.

Peer Support Leadership Training

On Tuesday 21 September, sixteen Year 10 students participated in our Peer Support Leadership Training program. This program provided our Year 10 students with the opportunity to develop their interpersonal, teamwork and problem-solving skills as they prepare to mentor our incoming Year 7 2023 students into the secondary school.

They ran a number of icebreaker activities amongst the group reflecting on what others did well in leading these sessions and ways in which they could improve. They completed an online survey which allowed them to determine their top three character strengths. We then used this data to look at our strengths as a leadership group, and identified who to call upon to complement our own character strengths.

The Year 10 Peer Support Leaders said the highlight of the day was when the Year 7 Guild Representatives joined us and spoke about their own difficulties and challenges when commencing Year 7 this year. The two groups worked together to formulate strategies and solutions to support our Year 7 2023 students in their transition into secondary school.

The Peer Support Leaders are looking forward to supporting the Year 7 2023 students during our transition afternoons in Term Four.

Year 7 2023 Orientation Day

On Monday 10 October, Year 7 2023 students will be participating in an orientation day. This day provides an opportunity for students to become familiar with the College environment, to meet some of their classmates and complete Allwell testing that will assist us in supporting them in transition. 鈥疭tudents will be given a tour of the College.鈥� They will work with student leaders and they will participate in a series of games and activities designed to foster friendships.

Students gather in the Gymnasium at 8.30am and they will be dismissed from the Gymnasium at 3.00pm.

Year 10 Adventure Camp

On Monday 10 October, our Year 10 students depart for their Adventure Camp in Karridale.

During this camp, students are given the opportunity to challenge themselves to develop leadership and self-management skills, resilience, and personal independence. The experience is a highlight for many students and I know that they will have an amazing time. We look forward to them returning to the College with great memories and many stories to share.

Monday’s Mock Trial Competition

On Monday night the 今日吃瓜 Mock Trial Team competed in the final round of the Law Society鈥檚 Mock Trial Competition located at the Supreme Court of WA. The team presented a fantastic case for the Defence against Corpus Christi College’s Prosecution team in the crimimal trial. The case involved the team presenting the defence for a man accused of creating a false belief when he took his mask off on a busy Perth train and told people he was positive, but did not specify that he had Influenza and not Covid. Three students participated as the lead Barristers and the assisting Solicitor, whilst others played the role of the eye witnesses and Judge’s Associate. Well done to the team for a well presented case and for winning the round!

Dear Parents and Guardians

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

I am sure that anyone who attended the College鈥檚 2022 Production would agree that it was a magnificently staged event.

Under the leadership of Leader of Learning The Arts, Yvonne Wiese, and direction of Dixie Johnstone, this production demonstrates the imagination, dedication and hard work of our students and staff. Our students were truly magnificent and I got to witness first hand back-stage the energy and passion they have for The Arts. It is so important that we cultivate and nourish our Performing Arts Program in the years ahead. Creating spaces like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory allow each child to test themselves and to grow their talent. Thank you must also go to the parents and friends whose commitment to supporting their children exemplifies our Marist spirit.

I congratulate all involved in bringing this classic story to 今日吃瓜.

Graduating Class of 2022

On Wednesday we celebrated the final day of formal education for our Year 12 students with the Principal鈥檚 Assembly. In my speech I spoke about what is the beginning of their journey onto a road that is unknown but full of promise and hope. In contrast, the World has been mourning the recent death of the Commonwealth鈥檚 longest serving Monarch, Queen Elizabeth II. With the ending of the Queen鈥檚 journey, we now take time to reflect on her legacy and her impact on the world. (Please click here to view the full speech.)

The assembly was live streamed throughout the College. In addition, the Lavalla Primary school along with the Secondary students formed a guard of honour as the Year 12 students moved from the Gymnasium to the Auditorium.

We now look forward to the formal Year 12 Graduation ceremony in Term 4.

At Thursday鈥檚 assembly we also announced the Leadership Group for 2023. Congratulations to Indiana Lummis and Michael Pethick who have been appointed College Captains and all those students who have been selected for leadership. I am confident that you will let your light shine in your new roles.

Celebrating St John Henry Newman Feast Day

The Feast of St Henry Newman is celebrated on 9 October. To mark the significance of this occasion, our K-12 Community will come together for a combined Mass in the Marcelin Sports Complex on Friday 14 October. Further details will be circulated to families, including the Primary Buddy Day.

End of Term

It has been a very busy term. Once again our students, staff and families have been magnificent. My prayer is that we take time to rest in preparation for the term ahead. We keep in our prayers the Year 12 students who will be completing their Mock exams.

Marian Assembly

Year 2 Blue took us through their wonderful narrative about the gingerbread man, that had been co-authored by the class. Their dramatic retelling of the story was certainly an indication of the wonderful talents of the class and their enthusiasm for bringing the story to life. Well done Miss Ferris and 2 Blue on a wonderful assembly.

STEM Festival / St John Henry Newman Buddy Day

As part of the celebration of St Joh Henry Newman, Kindy to Year 6 students will be involved in a day of STEM activities on Friday 14 October.

The STEM activities will be designed to complement the National Curriculum in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths by demonstrating the link between what鈥檚 taught in the classroom with the wider world.

Students will be given the opportunity to put their creative thinking into action, learn how to collaborate effectively, challenge their designs and celebrate successes and failures. Across the day, students will live out our Vision for Learning 鈥淪hine through Discovery鈥� with hands on STEM challenges.

This year we have focused on incorporating the following areas into the STEM Festival.

2022 National Science week theme. 鈥淕lass: More than meets the eye.鈥�
2022 Marist theme 鈥淜nown and Loved: Dignity for All鈥�.

Each class will work with a buddy class and complete a design thinking activity throughout the day. The challenges will be focused on the integration of the above areas.

Information regarding drop-off and pick-up for the Buddy Day, will be distributed on Monday 10 October, 2022.

Athletics Carnival

The Athletics carnival was held on Friday 9^th September and it was a wonderful day for all of the Pre-Primary to Year 6 students. The winning Faction and the Athletics age champions were announced on Monday. Congratulations to all of the students that received an award.

The winning faction was Knox, captained by Livia Bogdanov and Roman Vladich.

The Spirit award went to Brigid, captained by Emersyn Duck and Hamish Macgregor.

On Thursday 15^th September, the IPSHA Athletics team competed against other IPSHA schools. The students showed tremendous sportsmanship and athleticism and should be very proud of their efforts.

Student Wellbeing

A few weeks ago, I attended the first of our presentation evenings which was on resilience. The seminar discussed a number of topics including skills parents can use to help their children through life’s challenges and develop resilient young minds. The evening was well received with hundreds of our parents in attendance. There were three main things that stood out for me on the evening.

The first thing that Claire Eaton mentioned in the evening was around ‘The Big 6 questions’ which are the questions young people and adolescents are starting to ask themselves as they grow and develop:

Who am I?
Where do I fit in?
Who am I important to?
What’s important to me?
What am I good at?
What is my purpose?

It is good to know what is on the minds of our children. These questions can often pop up for kids at bedtime, when the busyness of the day has washed away, and we are finally alone with our thoughts for the day. We are encouraged to normalise these questions, and talk about them with our children to lessen the fear they may have around some of these topics. It is also ok to model to our children that is ok not to now the answer to these questions yet, but that in time, these answers will come.

We also heard on the night, how critical thinking interrupts resilience building, which in turn can increase feelings of fear and worry. To avoid this, Claire spoke about ‘above the line’ and ‘below the line’ thinking – different ways of approaching an obstacle or difficulty, saying that “the next thought is where the power is”. Sometimes as parents, it is really easy to jump in the pit with our children, but by redirecting their thoughts, or exploring other ways we can look at what’s happening, we can help our kids to develop their resiliency, and the way they could approach problems in the future.

Finally, and simply, the most important gift we can give our children is our time. This means being present with our children every opportunity we get. Not just physically, present, but emotionally and spiritually present too. Turning off the phone or our own devices, and really spending quality time listening to, speaking with, or simply being with our kids. This time spent now will pay off in the future – much like a bank account every moment we are present to our children now, will pay off for us in the future.

It was a wonderful, informative, and good humoured evening, and we look forward to hosting the team again soon.

Y12 Game Changers Graduation

Game Changers were sent off on Tuesday night with a lovely evening of celebration filled with friendship, laughter, delicious food and shared memories. Our Year 12 Game Changers gathered for the last time as students at the college with their parents for a lovely evening to celebrate their time together as Game Changers.

There were lovely presentations from students, that really highlighted to the benefits of their time in this group, such as the great perspective they gained from going on their trip to Mullewa last year, and the lasting bonds of friendship they created as leaders this year. Mr Finneran spoke of the ongoing benefits the students will take away from the program and the impact their positive actions will have on other people. Issy, our Marist Youth Ministry Regional Assistant, spoke of the exciting opportunities post school MYM has to offer and some of the initiatives she is planning to get running for next year.

Most importantly, however, it was just a lovely night for all to come together, reminisce and celebrate the journey this group has taken over the years. Game Changers continues to offer our students an opportunity to think about the world outside of themselves and reflect on who God is calling them to be. I am grateful to Sophie Monisse, Adeline Hendricks and Aleisha Bryson for walking with these students since they began their journey in Year 10.

Living Marist Service Learning

Our Christian Service Learning Program, Living Marist, has been running throughout the year with Year 7, 8 and 9 students. The purpose of service learning is to engage students in activities that challenge them to reflect, discern and act in the community.

Students have participated in a range of activities, both in the community and at school; recently supporting Lavalla and Marian students. Congratulations to our students who have worked hard and shown great initiative. Keep up the good work! These actions espouse the Marist values of Family Spirit and Love of Work.

The completed Service Learning booklets are due back at the beginning of Term 4 so there is still time for students to find opportunities for service in the community and add to their number of completed hours.

Year 7 Game Changers Retreat

On the 7 September, a small group of driven year sevens embarked on their very first Game changers retreat. The day was filled with team-building challenges, opportunities for personal growth as young Marist leaders, and an introduction to what game changers is all about. We found fun and interactive ways to discover some key Marist role models, or 鈥榮tars鈥�, and even some celebrities who seem to live out the Marist values; simplicity, love of work, in the way of Mary, family spirit, and presence. We finished up the day by looking into ways we can live out these values at home and, quite literally, 鈥榩lanting the seeds for future growth鈥�. This was encompassed in a 鈥榞row from home鈥� activity involving planting seeds in cups that the students decorated with goals. By the end of the retreat, the newest participants in the Game Changers program had a deeper understanding of what it means to be a young Marist and how they can grow to be the best versions of themselves and support each other in this journey.

Br Bill Sullivan

Last week we welcomed Br Bill Sullivan, Director of the Hermitage, Mittagong, into our Community. Throughout the year Br Bill works with our staff in faith formation and on this occasion he also offered a Parent Retreat.

Called The Golden Thread; Sensing the Sacred in the Ordinary, this retreat-style session gave participants an opportunity to pause, reflect, ask questions and develop a greater understanding of faith.

Having Br Bill in our community is another way we seek to empower our staff to engage in their faith story, explore their own purpose and relationship with God.

We look forward to welcoming Br Bill back to the College in 2023.

John Henry Newman Mass

October 9 is the Feast Day of St John Henry Newman. As the name chosen for our College it is an important day to celebrate our PK-12 community. On Friday 14 October our students from Kindy to Year 11 will gather to celebrate the Eucharist together. Primary students will then enjoy Buddy Day activities whilst those in Years 7-11 will return to normal classes. More information about these celebrations will be communicated to families in Term 4.

Thursday Morning Community Mass

Thank you to everyone who has attended our Thursday Morning Community Mass in the Champagnat Chapel this term. It is wonderful to see so many community members coming together each week to celebrate Mass with our students and staff.

Next term, following the John Henry Newman Mass in Week 1, and the Year 12 Graduation Celebration in Week 2, Community Mass recommences in Week 3 on Thursday 27 October and will be hosted by students in Catherine and Year 5 Blue.

Newman News Term 3 Week 8: From the Deputy Principal Primary

Today鈥檚 Athletics carnival was a wonderful celebration of community spirit and sportsmanship. Joining together to undertake a range of athletic events, students displayed fantastic team spirit. Some of my favourite moments of the day centred around students congratulating one another after their races and cheering one another on. Whilst we celebrate student success when they win their events, a massive goal of their athletics carnival is to instil our students a sense of sportsmanship and team spirit.

Significant work happens behind the scenes to make these events run smoothly. My sincere thanks are extended to Mrs Tash Richards and Mrs Lara Vlahov for their hard work in preparing the students and coordinating the carnival. The day was an enormous success, that ran very smoothly thanks to their hard work and attention to detail.

Congratulations to Brigid Guild on winning the Spirt Award. All results of guilds and champions will be released when scores are tallied up.

Speak up Awards

The Speak Up awards are sponsored by the Grand Lodge of WA Freemasons and are held teach years for students across Western Australia, in years 4, 5, or 6.

Three 今日吃瓜 students were successful in getting to the Preliminary Final round. They spoke fantastically and were excellent role models for our College. Congratulations to:

Father’s Day

Last week, in celebration and recognition of fathers, father figures and other significant men in the lives of our students, the College hosted two Father鈥檚 Day events. Students from Lavalla and Marcellin were invited to attend the Community Mass on Thursday morning, before staying to enjoy a light morning tea together.

Marian students, joined with their Dad to enjoy a sausage sizzle breakfast, followed by a beautifully prepared Liturgy dedicated to our Fathers, and to St Joseph 鈥� father of Jesus.

A big thank you is extended to the mothers and grandmothers that assisted on the Friday morning, in cooking and preparing the sausage sizzle. It was so lovely to have our parents back on campus for an event, and to be able to celebrate our community spirit in such an affirming way.

Thank you to the teachers from our Year 2 Unit who prepared our Marian students for the liturgical celebration, and our students who participated in the liturgy also.

Lavalla Assembly

Last Friday, students from 3 Blue presented a wonderful version of the story of the Good Samaritan set to music from the 80’s. It was a very contemporary way to share a very important that message – that Jesus calls on us to show love and kindness to eevryone we encounter, not just our family and friends. This can be tricky sometimes, but it is who we are called to be by being part of a Marist community. We also acknowledged the efforts of a number of students, including those from our extra-curricular Coder Dojo club who completed their projects this week. Congratulations to all students on their success over these past few weeks!

Marcellin Award

This week’s Marcellin Award was presented to Chole Male in 6 Blue. Chloe was nominated by a number of teachers, for the kind hearted and gracious way in which she supports and offers help to others. Like Marcellin Champagnat, Chloe is a highly relational, invitational and patient young person who has made a significant impact in our community. Well done Chloe on setting such a great example to us all.

Year 5 Incursion

Last Thursday, students from Year 5 took part in an incursion run by the Electoral Education Centre. Students had the chance to learn about our preferential voting system, and even had the chance to put their knowledge to the test in the form of a mock election. Students also had the chance to learn about compulsory voting, enrolments, and the different types of ballot papers that exist. It was a very informative incursion, and we thank our Year 5 teachers for organising this event.
