In an age characterised by all but a desperate need for solidarity, when the religious and secular bonds of community have become badly frayed, bridges real and metaphorical have become more important than ever. Pope Francis has repeatedly urged audiences around the world to engage in bridge-building (something he thinks is almost 鈥渕ore than human鈥�). 今日吃瓜 seeks to celebrate the questions and realities of our Catholic faith in a pluralistic and diverse context. We invite each family, student and member of staff on a journey that celebrates what it means to be 鈥榞ood news鈥� to each other as we seek to grow our community as a living and vibrant expression of the Gospel. Our , , opportunities, and our celebration of the sacraments seek to build living bridges which unite, foster connectedness, and create spaces where our faith is lived.

Year 11 Marist Association Philippines Immersion – (Friday 22 November 鈥� Thursday 5 December 2019)

Philippines Immersion

The Marist Association Year 11 Philippines Immersion is a joint commitment between the Western Australian Marist schools St Joseph鈥檚 Northam and 今日吃瓜 which is now into its fourth year. Following a period of application and interview, Mrs Carla Pastorelli (Leader of Wellbeing 鈥� Year 11) and Mr Tom Williams (Assistant Head of Sport) from 今日吃瓜 will accompany the group with Mr Daniel Lynch in 2019.

In 2019, 20 students from 今日吃瓜 applied for 16 places on the Immersion. Following both their application and a process of interview with Carla, Tom and myself, the following students will be attending the 2019 Philippines Immersion:

Jessica Ashwood, Samuel Beeton, Anastasia Berti, Kate Broderick, Grace Collins, Tegan Connelly, Charolotte Easden, Samuel Giumelli, Mitchell Harris, Meg Hobson, Damien Lockyer, Brodie Major, Jack Towie and Ruby Vance.

The students and staff from 今日吃瓜 will be joined by the following members of the St Joseph鈥檚 Northam community:

Hannah Morrison (Year 11 student), Katie Harris (Year 11 student) and Mr Shane Bransby (Teacher)

The Philippines Parent and Student Information Evening was held on Thursday 25 July (Term 3 Week 1), with the program of formation and Immersion preparations taking place over Terms 3 and 4.

Australian Catholic Youth Festival & Veritas Night 2019

The Australian Catholic Youth Festival (ACYF) is a national gathering of Catholic young people established by the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference (ACBC). It exists to provide young Australians with opportunities to deepen their relationship with Jesus, be empowered to be disciples in the world today and encounter and celebrate the vitality of the Church in Australia. This year the ACYF will be held in Perth between 8 鈥� 10 December. Young people between the ages of 14 and 35 from around Australia will be invited to:

  • participate in high-quality formative and experiential opportunity for young Catholics to encounter Jesus Christ, in the context of the Catholic Church in Australia;
  • Listen to and discuss the issues and challenges in the lives of young Catholics in Australia;
  • Engage with local examples and connections of vocations, social action, liturgy and prayer, catholic music and faith formation.

Students in Year 9 from the College will be invited to apply to attend ACYF. This event will take the place of the Remar Embarkation camp this year.

In preparation for the Australian Catholic Youth Festival, students considering applying for ACYF will attend the Veritas Night, held at John XXIII College in Mt Claremont on Friday 9 August 6.00pm 鈥� 9.30 pm. Veritas is an annual gathering of Catholic young people in Western Australia aged 12-35. It exists as a state-wide conference and festival, which aims to provide young people in Western Australia with an opportunity to deepen their faith and take an active role in the Church and community. The event includes festivities including live bands, dynamic speakers, youth rallies, faith expos, Liturgy and workshops.

REMAR Gold Retreat

Today the Remar Gold Caravel gathered together for their final retreat of their 3-year Remar journey. The retreat is facilitated by Dan Litjens (Class of 2016) with support from Gold Helm, Mr Michael Van der Heever, Campus Minister, Br Terry Orrell, ex-students Josh Sampson (Class of 2018) and Sarah Whitton (Class of 2018), as well as Mrs Cole-Carter. The afternoon provides an opportunity to reflect on the previous years of the program with a specific focus on applying the on motto of the Gold crossing, 鈥楾o be a witness in our community鈥�.

Newman News Term 3 Week 2: From the Leader of Wellbeing Early Childhood

The National Quality Standards is an Australian wide initiative (governed by the Australian Children鈥檚 Education and Care Quality Authority 鈥� ACECQA) that focuses on the delivery of quality Early Childhood education in all Australian settings. It strives to achieve this by examining Early Childhood practices across seven quality areas. Quality Area 6 examines 鈥楥ollaborative Partnerships with Families and Communities鈥� and seeks to articulate the importance of the three-way partnership that exists in a child鈥檚 journey through school.

Collaborative partnerships between schools and families are fundamental to achieving quality outcomes for children. When parents and teachers come together in positive partnership, it results in the best outcomes for our students. These partnerships place children鈥檚 development across social, emotional and cognitive domains at the forefront. On our , throughout the journey, families remain our closest partners in this process.

Parent Teacher Interviews

I extend my gratitude to all staff and parents who took part in the Parent Teacher Interviews on the first day back. These interviews are a way of maintaining a positive and collaborative relationship between home and school. They also provide families with the opportunity to celebrate their child鈥檚 strengths and reflect on their child鈥檚 learning journey thus far.

Developing Early Literacy Skills

Oral language is an essential skill in Early Childhood literacy development and assists with successful reading and writing. Here are some activities you can engage in with your child to promote their oral language skills:

  • Play 鈥業-Spy鈥� with your child. Focus on the initial sound 鈥淚-spy with my little eye, something that starts with the sound /c/鈥�. Be sure to make the sound, not the letter name.
  • Develop children鈥檚 semantic awareness. When driving in the car or sitting at a caf茅, choose a theme (such as the farm, supermarket, zoo, kitchen etc.) and go around in a circle naming objects / items that can be found within that category. For older children, you can follow the alphabet as a prompt. Eg. Zoo: A 鈥� Alligator, B 鈥� Baboon, C 鈥� Cheetahs, D 鈥� Dingoes鈥�)
  • Use an extensive vocabulary when talking with your child. Pause to explain the meaning of a word that they may not have been exposed to before.
  • Ask your child about words that rhyme. Eg. What words rhyme with (sound like) car?
  • After reading to your child, ask them questions such as 鈥淲hat was that story about?鈥� or 鈥淒id you like that character? Why?鈥�
  • Ask your child about something they enjoyed at school that week? Why did they enjoy it?
  • Ask your child about the future鈥� What are they going to do tomorrow? Or on the weekend? What do they need to do before they go to bed?

Newman News Term 3 Week 2: From the Leader of Wellbeing Primary

Welcome back! I hope that you all enjoyed a restful holiday break. We have had a brilliant start to Term 3 and I look forward to these 10 weeks being filled with diverse learning opportunities and many occasions to celebrate as a community.

I extend my gratitude to all staff and parents who took part in the Parent Teacher Interviews on the first day back. This was an opportunity for all parents to engage in conversation with classroom teachers to discuss students鈥� academic progress as part of the growth of the whole child within the school environment. We welcome the partnership between home and school as integral in the development and success of each and every child.

Faction Cross Country Carnival

This term we are pleased to welcome Mrs Jemma Bulmer to the Lavalla team as our Physical Education Teacher. I wish to thank her for the excellent start to the Athletics Program this term with her successful organisation and running of the Faction Cross Country Carnival last week. Knox Faction are to be congratulated on their impressive effort on the day, resulting in an excellent win! At today’s Assembly, we also acknowledged the Age Group Champions who were awarded their medallions. to see the list of Age Champions and more photos from the day.

All students are acknowledged for their enthusiastic participation in the event and the spirit with which they competed with their peers and supported their faction. Congratulations to those students selected to represent the College at the Cross Country Carnival later this month.

Year 3-6 Assembly – Item Year 4 Red

Today Year 4 Red led the Lavalla Campus Assembly. Their item focused on STEM, gearing up to the building excitement of all students about next week鈥檚 . Thank you Mr Harvie and students of Year 4 Red.

Lavalla STEM Festival

At Lavalla, students will be building Arcade Games out of cardboard inspired by Caine鈥檚 Arcade. Planning begins today and we look forward to seeing what they come up with next week!

Marcellin Award

Congratulations Aadil Thekkayil from 6 Green who was acknowledged today in receiving the Lavalla Campus Marcellin Award.

Aadil is always respectful to peers and teachers. He has a way of quietly checking in on their peers to see if they are okay and always take time to ask how he can help. Aadil always behaves responsibly, setting very high expectations with his behaviour. He doesn鈥檛 seek recognition, he sees a need and acts on this because it is the right thing to do. His peers often acknowledge how caring he is and are grateful to have him as a classmate. Aadil is a quiet achiever in all aspects of school life who is truly a wonderful example for everyone in our community.

The Marcellin Award at Lavalla is presented at campus assemblies to one student selected by the Leadership Team from submitted nominations.

The Arts

Lavalla students have a busy term ahead in the area of The Arts. We have many students representing the College individually and in groups at the Catholic Performing Arts Festival.

Students in Lavalla Choir and Lavalla Dance Troupe have loved being a part of preparations for the PALS Project and Wakkakiri in the lead up to significant performances this term.

The College supports our many gifted students in their participation in and we look forward to celebrating their talents this term.

Newman News Term 3 Week 2: From the Vice Principal

, Excursions and Incursions seek to provide students with an authentic, in the world, application of their learning. On the holidays I had the honour of touring New York City with our Arts students and staff. I also followed the Humanities Tour of Sydney and Canberra closely. Over and above the educational outcomes presented, every member of staff commented on the independence, communication skills, resilience and initiative the students develop very quickly to support the group they are travelling with. Our students certainly lived our as they embraced the challenges presented and celebrated new found friendships, new learning and new experiences.

Catholic Arts

The Performing Arts Festival for Catholic Schools and Colleges seeks to provide students with specific 鈥榩erformance platforms鈥� where they have the unique opportunity to give of their very best and perform to a public audience. Open to both Primary and Secondary school students, the performance categories encompass choral, drama, musical, instrumental, vocal and dance aspects of the Performing Arts. Approximately 18,000 students enter the Festival each year. Newman supports this event in our quest to ensure students of have a platform to showcase their talents, represent the College and their families and participate in a highly regarded event and festival. My thanks to staff and students who attended the Opening Mass and my best wishes to every student, individual or group, who has nominated to perform. We look forward to sharing this experience with you.

The College uses Facebook, Instagram and Twitter to celebrate and showcase learning, connect with families (prospective and current) and to stay in contact with past students. We know social media platforms are a highly effective way to engage with all members in our College, Marist and wider community. The Code of Conduct extends to all social media platforms and it is important that if you have feedback for the College that it is directed to a relevant member of staff. As adults, we must role model appropriate online behaviours for our children and give the College an opportunity to respond directly to any concerns or feedback.

Newman News Term 3 Week 2: From the Deputy Principal Wellbeing Secondary

Welcome back, I hope students had an enjoyable break and have come back energised for Term 3. The start of term sees us continue to hold Year 10 Subject Selection interviews. I would like to thank all the staff involved in the process, particularly Mr Farley and Mr Geekie. In Week 3 we will be holding our . I strongly encourage students to get involved on the day and enjoy the opportunity to be out of classes with their peers on what promises to be a great day for the Guilds.

The start of term is a good time to remind people of the resources available to help children have safe and enjoyable experiences online. If you have not already done so, I would strongly advise parents to visit the and use some of the resources offered.

Finally, a reminder that if families have any questions regarding their child, please do not hesitate to contact the College. Classroom/Pastoral Care teachers, Leader of Wellbeing and our Counselling Team are available to help students with any problems they may be having or to provide guidance for their studies.

Humanities Tour / Arts Tour

Over the break we saw two College tours take place; the visited Sydney & Canberra while the visited New York. Reports from staff and students have been hugely positive and I hope our students have taken away some great memories from their time away. I was also very pleased to receive feedback from members of the public about our students on these tours. Our students were complimented on the way they conducted themselves in public areas and the manner in which they carried themselves. While it is always nice to receive such positive feedback as a school, these comments really compliment the families in our community and the children they are raising.

Counselling and Wellbeing Team

Returning to school after the holidays can be a time of readjustment for many students. Supporting your child to have a regular school routine will help them to transition back to school and maintain good habits throughout the term. for some tips on how you can assist your child to develop a regular routine and reduce potential school-related stress.

Year 12 Human Biology Excursion

On Monday the Year 12 Human Biology class visited the Harry Perkins Institute. Students worked in the lab, where they set up and ran biotechnological processes to better understand how mutations can be identified. to read more and see more photos from the day.

Year 11 & 12 High Achievers Breakfast

On Wednesday morning students in Years 11 and 12 who have demonstrated outstanding academic commitment and achievement throughout the year were invited to a celebratory breakfast. Over breakfast students shared their successes and strategies and engaged with like-minded individuals, forming a network of support and encouragement for their remaining time at the College. Students were congratulated by Mr Fitzpatrick, Mr Lynch and their Leaders of Wellbeing.
