NAS Sport

NAS Sport commences next week for students in Years 8-12. Due to Camp, the Year 7鈥檚 will have their first fixture on Monday 9 March (Week 6). All students should check their SEQTA Team Forums to get the latest information from their coaches. Permission slips need to be signed by parents and returned to the Coach before the first game. ACC Swimming Training

ACC Swim Squad Training is well underway for all team members. Training takes place from 7.00am – 8.00am Tuesday and Thursday mornings followed by breakfast. The training program can be downloaded here:

Next Friday (6 March) is the NAS Swim Meet. Squad members (Years 7-10) will be competing against other NAS schools and have a further opportunity to record times to press for final selection in the ACC Swim Team. Year 7 students have a pupil free day that day however are strongly encouraged to attend the event. All spectators are welcome to attend.

Years 7-12 Guild Swimming Carnival

The Guild Swimming Carnival was a fun day of competition, sportsmanship and Guild spirit. Congratulations to MacKillop for winning the Guild Spirit Award and Marcellin for winning the Championship Shield. Click here for more results and photos from the day.

We have experienced a wonderful summer season so far and while it is nearing the end, there is much to look forward to. One of the highlights of the season is always the McGowan Relay.

This event is being run following our Club Meet 5 on Friday 6 March so turn up from 5.30pm to warm up and check out the competition.

The McGowan Relay is a fun relay event that always brings plenty of excitement and thrilling racing to the pool. It’s the one chance our youngest members get to race in a team and take on some of the older members. So, get a team of four together, or just come down on the afternoon and we’ll find you a team to swim with. Swimmers can be current club members, their parents, siblings or friends (non-members).

Teams are seeded according to handicaps and the first swimmer of each team is given their start handicap time. After each heat, handicap times are re-calculated, and heats are swum until there are only eight teams left to swim off for the trophy.

McGowan Relay Registration: you can either email the names of your team members (and their 50m freestyle times if you know them) to nchswimming@hotmail.com or you can just register on the afternoon.

So who will have their team name or individual name forever etched on the Peter McGowan Shield?

Individual Accomplishments

  • Nicholas Pereira (Year 9) was selected for the WA Black Swans State team for futsal (U13s) and recently played in the national competition in Canberra. In 2019 he played for the State side too so this is the second consecutive year that he has been selected. Well done!
  • Congratulations Sydney Poor (Year 10) who has been selected in the Australian U16 water polo squad. This squad has been selected to prepare for the World Championships being held in Greece and Pan Pacs in NZ. She was one of seven Western Australians chosen.

Guild Swimming Carnival

The Guild Swimming Carnival was a fun day of competition, sportsmanship and Guild spirit for the Years 7-12’s. It was wonderful to see so many students dressed in their Guild colours and compete in a range of races and novelty events throughout the day.

We had some great individual results and had an amazing 5 records broken:

  • Sam Giumelli broke the Year 12 Male 50m freestyle record with a time of 25.5 seconds
  • Jake Paynter broke the Year 9 Male 50m Freestyle record with a time of 27.53 seconds
  • Emily Holland broke the Year 10 Female 50m backstroke record that was set in 1987 with a time of 33.71 seconds
  • Imogen Boss broke 2 records: The Year 8 Female 50m Freestyle record with a time of 28.78 seconds and the 50m Backstroke record with a time of 33.38 seconds.

High Achievers Assembly

This morning we welcomed back our outstanding High Achievers from the Class of 2019. It has now become a College tradition at the start of each academic year to recognise the exceptional performances of the previous cohort. The assembly was attended by the Years 10-12 cohorts, teachers and families of the high achievers.

Awards were presented to those students who achieved an ATAR of 90+, who have received special recognition from the School Curriculum and Standards Authority, or achieved excellence in a General Pathway.

In his Principal’s Address, Mr Finneran made reference to the number of significant Australians who were recently recognised as an Australian of the Year;聽 in particular Ash Barty who was recognised as聽 The Young Australian of the Year. He quoted Barty’s acceptance speech where she said “It’s about being humble and respectful, and giving it a crack – trying to be the best you can be, and that’s all you can ask of yourself.”

Mr Finneran challenged the High Achievers to “continue to participate, contribute and make a difference to the world in which we live. Put simply, giving it a crack. As a community we will continue to support each other to grow in our strengths – students, teachers and families. To do so, like the Australians of the Year, we need to be resilient, work hard and set goals.”

Other highlights included a performance by Newman Groove, who played Natural Woman and the High Achievers Address by Patrick Diamond.

Patrick reflected on his Year 12 experience; which he admitted was one of the best yet hardest years of his life.聽 Patrick said “Since leaving Newman I鈥檝e come to realise how grateful I am for the opportunities the school provided. Being in multiple bands taught me new music and skills I can take with me forever, taking part in the production gave me confidence and activities such as debating taught me how to win an argument, a skill that has proven quite useful.”

He also provided some tips for a successful year which included; your friends are your best study companions, utilise the school library, resources and study options like Homework Club, take regular study breaks and most importantly look after yourself.

It was wonderful to see so many of the High Achievers return to the College to celebrate their success. We wish them all the best in this next chapter of their lives.

Marist Theme 2020

The Marist Theme for 2020 is, 鈥�Creating one new humanity鈥�. It is the call for Marist communities across Australia to have a renewed consciousness of our need for each other, of our responsibility to creation and of our commitment to upholding human dignity.

The Marist theme is a response to our desire to find meaning and purpose in our lives and can be expressed in Mary Oliver鈥檚 poem 鈥楾he Summer Day鈥�:

鈥楾ell me, what is it you plan to do with your one, wild and precious life?鈥�

At its heart, it is a question that invites us to look at who we are, the lives we are living and our place in the world. St Paul expressed this vision when he spoke to the community of Ephesus about Jesus鈥� mission to break down all that divides, for the creation of one new humanity. It is a journey where each one of us is invited to ponder what we can create with our 鈥榦ne wild and precious life鈥�.

As we make this bold journey together as a PK-12 community in 2020, may each of us set out anew, to pass beyond what is familiar, to the fringes and beyond, to shape our College as a place where Jesus is alive, and in which each of us lets our light shine.
Marist Theme 2020

Marist Bushfire Appeal

Friday 7 February saw Marists across Australia stand together in unity and solidarity with the people of Australia who lost relatives, friends, homes and businesses and the thousands stranded as fires burnt across our country.

It was a fantastic day where staff and students came together doning their best ‘Aussie’ accessories and raised over $2000 for those effected by the fires. A big thank you to the staff and Year 12 students who helped with the different activities on the day.

Thank you to all staff, students and families who joined our PK-12 Family Mass on Thursday 13 February on the Br Terence Gleeson Oval. The evening gave us the opportunity to come together as a Catholic community, to share the Eucharist and to give our hopes and aspirations to God as we begin 2020. The evening was also an occasion for the commissioning of the Year 6 and Year 12 student leaders. Click here to see more photos from the day. Ash Wednesday

As a PK-12 Catholic community, we will be holding a number of celebrations on Wednesday 26 February for Ash Wednesday. This is a significant day in the life of the Church and as such, Liturgies will be celebrated across Marian, Lavalla and Marcellin Campuses. Ash Wednesday signifies the beginning of Lent which is a 40-day season of reflection and preparation before the celebrations of Easter. By observing the 40 days of Lent, Christians replicate Jesus Christ’s sacrifice and withdrawal into the desert for 40 days. Lent is marked by fasting, almsgiving and prayer. The colour purple is used for all liturgical events during Lent to remind us of Christ鈥檚 suffering, death and resurrection. We look forward to recognising and commemorating this sacred occasion in Week 4.

PK-12 Family Mass

This annual event was a beautiful way to commence our College year. To witness 2,500 people gathered to celebrate the opening of our year was a real privilege. The Mass is the only opportunity we have as a PK-12 community to come together as one; recognising the diversity of our College, affirming our students, staff and families and praying for the year ahead. Congratulations to those students who were recognised as leaders of Year 6 and Year 12 for 2020. Each cohort undertook a significant formation program and my thanks go to all students who participated. We look forward to your voice and representation of your peers throughout the year. Parent Sundowner
