Newman News Term 3 Week 2: From the Leader of Early Childhood

We warmly welcome back all families to Term 3. With the easing of restrictions, it has been wonderful seeing parents across the campus again. We place great importance on the involvement of families in the educational journey of children, as we know that parents are the first and most influential educator of their children. As classrooms, the Library and Art Room all begin parent rosters once again, we encourage parents to sign up; children love having their parents at school and through your involvement they also appreciate the value that you place on their educational journey.

Fitness Friday

Fitness Friday has also recommenced and there is a wealth of activities for your children to select from each Friday morning – Lego Club, Gardening, Netball skills, Art Club, Dance Aerobics, Skipping and Table Tennis to name just a few.

We have not been able to secure a coffee van for every Friday of this Term, but the service will be available intermittently, as their availability allows. We encourage families to join in with their child in the activities, enjoy a coffee when available and reconnect with parents you may not have seen for some time

Pre-Primary and Kindergarten parents are asked to remain with their child until the bell rings, at which time they should be taken to their classroom door.

Marcellin Award

Congratulations to the following student who received a Marcellin Award in Week 2:

  • Christoper Kacperek, Year 1: For showing the Marist charism of “Love of Work” and the enthusiasm you have shown for your work and your consistent strive to challenge yourself with your learning.

The Marcellin Award at Marian Campus is drawn from submitted nominations each Wednesday morning at Prayer Assembly.

Pre Primary Red Assembly

Parents are invited to join us for the Pre Primary Red Assembly on Friday 7 August in the Marian Hall.

Pre Primary Landsdale Farm Excursion

Today the Pre Primary students enjoyed an excursion to Landsdale Farm to begin their unit on The Farm. They had a fabulous day exploring and learning about all the different farm animals.

This has also aligned with the baby chicks that they have been watching hatch in their common area.

Wellbeing Week

In Week 4, all students across the College will take part in Wellbeing Week. Everyone will be invited to take part in a number of activities focusing on different areas of wellbeing including physical health, mindfulness and building connection. The week will culminate in a Buddy Day at Lavalla Campus with a range of activities and our annual Lapathon.

Students are permitted to wear their sports uniform all week.

One Wild and Precious Life

Our Marist theme this year 鈥淥ne Wild and Precious Life 鈥 Creating a new humanity鈥 has taken on greater significance as we try to understand the world in a state of crisis.

Staff at 今日吃瓜 were able to reflect on this theme to commence Term 3 and reflected on how despite the challenges, we have many things to be grateful for and only need look to the gifts of our students and families.

There is a range of opportunities this Term for families and students, and together with staff, where our College community can begin to create a new humanity of gratitude and service to one another.

St Vincent De Paul Winter Appeal

Blanket Appeal

We begin Term 3 by offering our support to St Vincent De Paul through their Winter Appeal. This year we are calling for donations of blankets, warm clothes and sleeping bags for those sleeping rough. Items can be placed into the boxes at the Champagnat Chapel or brought to your classroom teachers at the Lavalla and Marian Campuses until the end of Week 3.

Winter Sleepout

On Friday 7 August, we are hosting a PK-12 online community winter sleep out to raise awareness about homelessness. The online winter sleep out marks the conclusion of our donation drive. Families will be invited to participate in the following way:

  • Engage with the videos / info / reflection questions posted to our social media pages and talk about your thoughts over your family dinner.
  • Have dinner of sandwiches or soup in a thermos in the car and participate in some of the reflection questions posted to our social media pages.
  • Spend the night in your car in your driveway / your backyard (outdoors) with or without a tent, the night on your couch or the floor.

We encourage you to team up with another family and share your experiences and reflection during the course of the night.

We would also love to see and hear how you are spending this night of solidarity so make sure to tag any social media posts with #Newmancollegeonlinesleepout

Mini Marists

This Term sees the beginning of our Mini Marists Social Justice Group.

This group of Year 6 students has begun by looking at what does it mean to be Marist and focused on one of the Marist Characteristics, Love of Work.

This has led to the group鈥檚 first initiative by ensuring all rubbish is placed in bins. Students spent 5 minutes at the end of recess and lunch on Wednesday and Thursday and managed to collect over 10 bags of rubbish.

The Mini-Marists shared this at their most recent prayer assembly and challenged students to make an effort to put their rubbish in the bin.

Their next project turns to the St Vincent de Paul winter sleep out. Stay tuned to see how they continue to grow and serve the community.

Year 11 Student Leaders Commissioning Mass

On Thursday 30 July, Year 11 aspiring Student Leaders attending our community Mass were commissioned as they consider their leadership journey in 2021. Mr Finneran led a prayer of commissioning as Fr Garner blessed the Year 11 Leaders as they begin their discernment.

This was a fantastic opportunity to acknowledge those who have said 鈥榊es鈥 to help grow and shape our College community into a place where Jesus Christ is known and loved and all students can let their light shine.

Year 6 Parliament House Excursion

Last Friday, all Year 6 students traveled to Parliament House and the Constitutional Centre. Students reported having a great time and had the opportunity to get some first-hand experience in how the voting and political system of Western Australia works. They were the first group to return to Parliament House since Covid-19 restrictions were lifted, a point not lost on the Parliament House social media team!

Student Reflections

A golden mace, a black rodd, these are just some of the things you would imagine when you hear the word parliament. Well, Year 6 did not have to imagine it. We got to see it with our own eyes and learn all about the history of parliament. Did you know that the mace we have in Perth is the oldest mace there is鈥 at least it is now. Victoria once had the oldest mace until it was stolen. To this day we do not know who took it or where it lays at this present moment. This is just one of the facts we learnt. If we were to state all the facts we learnt we would be here all day.

We started our day meeting Viv the mannequin that talked in what looked like a news station. We learnt all about the people who represent our State and our Country and how to vote. Later we got to do our own vote activity. We all voted whether kitkats, Maltese鈥檚, mars bar or skittles were the best. We even got to do our votes in a voting booth with screens and flyers! But in the end the kitkats won. This was such a special and fun time as the tour guide was so funny and kind. But the fun did not stop there!

When we went to the real Parliament House we were so shocked about all the mind blowing facts, objects on display and just mainly how everything works. We were very fortunate to be able to see all of these incredible things and learn all of the knowledge that is sure to help us later on.” Jessica Bourke, Year 6 student

“Last Friday the Year 6’s visited the West Australian Parliament House and the Hale House. This excursion gave us an introduction into politics which we will be learning in HASS this Term.

Once we arrived at the Hale House, we learned the multiple steps that occur on voting day. The steps ranged from the questions voters receive upon entering the ballot room and the two types of ways you can vote. We even held our own mini voting campaign on which Kit Kat got elected into parliament.

Following on from the voting polls, we visited the official Parliament House of Western Australia. There we learned about famous premiers and the upper and lower house. We learned many intriguing facts but my favourite overall was the story of the mace, a traditional object carried by the Sergeant in arms to protect the speaker.

The excursion was a very inspiring and entertaining day for all Year 6’s. Maybe one day you will see one of us become premier.” Aidan Iannantuoni
