2022 Guild Athletics Carnival
On Monday 22 August, the College gathered on Founder鈥檚 Court to acknowledge the Age Champions and Champion Guild for the 2022 Guild Athletics Carnival. STEM Festival 2022
This year to celebrate National Science Week the college held a combined event over two weeks, involving the Marcellin and Lavalla students. There were 14 events in total, organised by the Science, Technologies and Maths departments.
Science invited classes from Lavalla to take part in two events. Secondary teachers lead them through the activities. The Year 3 classes were involved in creating giant bubbles and bubbles of different shapes, such as cubes. The Year 5鈥檚 applied their chemistry knowledge to use everyday ingredients and created fizzy sherbet and ice cream. Both classes had fun and were able to take bubble wands or sweet treats back to enjoy during their lunch break.
Marcellin students were presented with a variety of activities during lunchtime that were organised by each department. Science also involved secondary student in sherbet and ice cream making. The turnout was phenomenal in spite of the rain and wind on that day. Thankfully we enjoyed sunny whether for the bubble blowing event later in the week.
The physics of flight was tested when students were encouraged to fold their best paper planes and prizes were awarded for distance flown. A Science Scinema, screening live streams from the WA Museum, allowed students a look behind the scenes at the museum鈥檚 collection of spiders and what information can be discovered from sea glass found in shipwrecks.
Mr Spriggins and Mr Gerreyn presented the ever-popular rocket and dry ice displays on the oval as a finale to the science events of the festival.
Maths got in on the sweet treat activities with, How long can you make it? Students had to stretch a lolly snake or tear a Mintie wrapper to create the longest length possible. It was a fierce competition and records were nearly broken. Shoot the Sheriff and Countdown competitions were held and Maths wound up the festival with pies won by those students who could recite pi to 10 decimal places.
Technologies offered events across the wide diversity covered within their department, including virtual reality experiences, a very popular and competitive E-Sports tournament and a Cake decorating challenge.
The winner of our cake decorating challenge was Maisie Brown and Ava Otten from Year 7. Honorable mentions go to Olivia McMohon, Hanah Woolfrey, Scarlette Sharpe, Alice Humbert, Lulu Brickland, Grace Bradshaw, Holly Kallawk, Ellen King, Karri Willesee and Emily Costly who also produced excellent designs.
The winner and champion of the 2022 Multiversus E-Sport Challenge was Christian Hoang from year 9 and runner up Oliver Hunter from year 8.
We experienced a lot of fun and learning across the College and we look forward to staff and student participation again next year.

Marcellin Book Week
Here on the Marcellin campus, staff and students have been involved in a range of Book Week activities, to celebrate and encourage the opportunity to keep Dreaming with Eyes Open. There has been a PCG quiz where students have been tested on their knowledge of famous quotes, books and characters. In English classes, a range of activities have been run and students have had the opportunity to buy or win raffle tickets for a Book Voucher- and any proceeds made will go towards the Indigenous Literacy Fund.
The English staff have had their top reads recommended to the whole community on the screens in each classroom. Staff have also been engaged in a 鈥楤lind Date with a Book鈥� where donations of some great novels have been placed in a basket for their next reader to pick up and enjoy.
Friday saw staff across the College dress up as a famous book character to celebrate the end of Book Week, and enjoy a book-themed morning tea.
We鈥檙e excited that we can still share the love of reading and the magic of celebrating Book Week across the Marcellin campus, and possibly re-ignite a love of reading among our staff and students. A big thank you to the English Department for their passion and creativity in organizing the week.

Law Society Mock Trial Competition Round 2
Last week the 今日吃瓜 Mock Trial Team competed in the second round of the Law Society鈥檚 Mock Trial Competition located at the Supreme Court of WA. The team鈥痯resented a fantastic case for the Plaintiff against All Saints College鈥檚 Defence team in the civil trial. Three students participated as the lead Barristers and the assisting Solicitor, whilst others played the role of the eye witnesses and Court Orderly. Students now progress onto a third round later in Term 3. Well done, for an impressive second trial!鈥�
Year 12 Politics and Law with guest speaker Kate Chaney MP
The local member for Curtin, Independent Kate Chaney visited the Year 12 Politics and Law students to share with them, her wealth of experience and knowledge. Kate shared her story with the students as they actively engaged in the Q&A session. The students were able to gain an insight into the inner workings of the House of Representatives and the role of the crossbench.鈥�
Year 11 Extended PCG 鈥� Wednesday 24 August
Our Year 11 students heard from guest presenters from Armed for Life on Wednesday 24 August. Armed For Life has worked with 450 schools across Perth and presented to over 950,000 students. Armed For Life workshops are designed to educate and equip young people鈥痶o be able to deal with the problems that we face in life. Armed For Life is a driven by the goal of helping children, teenagers and adults develop resilience and increase their wellbeing and mental health. Armed for Life strive to make it acceptable to ask for that help and address issues relating to Protective Behaviours and the Keeping Kids Safe Curriculum in a safe and trustworthy way.
The workshop was titled Healthy Relationships and Consent and covered topics that linked to the Keeping Safe Curriculum and reflected our Marist theme and Catholic Social Teachings around the Dignity of the Human person.
2023 Year 12 Leadership Applications
Applications for the 2023 Year 12 Student Leadership Team close this afternoon. Student engagement in this process has been outstanding and we look forward to reading the applications. Student and staff votes will occur in Week 7, with interviews beginning shortly after.
Father鈥檚 Day Celebrations
With Father鈥檚 Day approaching on Sunday September 4, we are taking the opportunity to celebrate the importance of fathers and father figures in our families and to thank them for their contribution to our community.
On Thursday 1 September we warmly invite fathers, grandfathers and father figures to join us at 8.10am for our Community Mass in the Champagnat Chapel and to stay after Mass for refreshments with staff and students.

HOODS
Year 11 ATAR And Year 12 General students are excited to present excerpts of 鈥淗oods,鈥� by Angela Betzien. The class has been working all term on rehearsing and refining their performances of this gripping and extremely moving play. They have used a number of Brechtian techniques, a particular form of theatre they have been learning about this year, to assist in the shaping of the performance. 鈥淗oods鈥� themes are tough ones 鈥� marginalised youth, suburban poverty and domestic violence and they have tackled these with sensitivity and maturity. All are encouraged to attend this one night only event!

The final round of the Online Literacy and Numeracy Assessment (OLNA) for 2022 will be taking place during Weeks 7 and 8.
Year 7 Disco
The Year 7 Disco will be held in the Marist Auditorium on Thursday 8 September from 6:30pm 鈥� 8pm. Information has now been sent to parents via Consent2GO. Our Year 12 Student Leaders host this event and it is shaping up to be a fantastic evening!
