Newman News Term 3 Week 10: From the Deputy Principal Secondary

It is hard to believe that the end of Term 3 is here! I am sure that our students and staff are looking forward to a chance to slow down, breathe and rejuvenate ready for Term听4.听It听has been wonderful to see the growth in student learning as they challenge themselves and take on new opportunities. It is a privilege to come to school each day and see students striving for excellence.

I wish our students and family and very happy and restful break, and I look forward to welcoming students back to Term 4 on Tuesday 12 October. A reminder that students wear their Summer Uniform throughout Term 4.

Highlights from the Past Two Weeks听

Year 12 Last Week听

Week 10 was the final week of school for our Year 12 cohort. Throughout the week, students participated in a variety of activities such as a disco, capture the flag game, scavenger hunt and the traditional water slide on Thursday morning.

We said goodbye to our Year 12 students at the Principal鈥檚 Assembly on Thursday. Mr Phil Walleystack joined us and spoke to the College Community about the experiences that formed him as person. Our students have seen Phil conducting 鈥榃elcome to Country鈥 at major College events and at the assembly, we had the opportunity to hear more of his story. Phil鈥檚 message to our students and the Class of 2021 was about knowing your own value and taking all opportunities as you never know where they can lead you.

To conclude the assembly, students in Years 3 鈥 11 created a Guard of Honour across the Marcellin oval for our Year 12 students. It was a very special and moving moment for the Class of 2021.

2022 Student Leadership Team听

This year 37 Year 11 students embarked on the Year 11 Leadership Preparation program. Prospective leaders attended a commissioning mass and four afterschool workshops focused on strengths, values, and service.

Students produced written applications, underwent a student and staff vote, shortlisting and interviews. Students nominating for College Captain also presented to members of the Executive and Senior Leadership Teams.听The applications and presentations this year were of an extremely high standard and all Year 11 students should be proud of their efforts throughout the program and of their continuing role as leaders in our community.

I am looking forward to seeing these students grow their leadership skills with a strong foundation of faith,听strengths听and values. I would like to thank Miss Cristina听Guzzomi, Leadership Coordinator and Mr Mat Puljiz, Leader of Wellbeing Year 11 for their support and guidance of these students throughout this process.

Congratulations to the 2022 Student Leadership Team!

Year 10 Peer Support听

During Week 9 a group of Year 10 students participated in a Peer Support Training Day. These students will play a significant role in the 2022 Year 7 transition and orientation program. Throughout the day, students engaged in sessions on leadership qualities, character strengths and then specifically looked at how they can assist our incoming Year 7 students in settling into high school. Thank you to Miss Gemma Beekink, Leader of Wellbeing Year 10 and Miss Cristina Guzzomi, Leadership Coordinator for organising and facilitating this leadership opportunity for Year 10 students. I am really looking forward to seeing these students lead our 2022 Year 7 students with care, compassion and empathy.

Year 6 & 12 Leadership Breakfast听

Our Year 6 and 12 Leadership Teams came together for the final time in Week 9. Students shared in a breakfast and had an opportunity to reflect on their leadership journey throughout 2021. Mr Stuart McClorey, Leader of Primary and myself have really enjoyed working with this exceptional group of students this year and we look forward to building on these formation workshops in 2022.

ACC Athletics Carnival

Our ACC Athletes performed brilliantly this year, exceeding all expectations by finishing 4th overall in A Division. This is our best result in well over a decade! Full credit goes to everyone for committing to training, displaying mental toughness and delivering their personal best under the pressure of elite competition. We should all be extremely proud of this performance, and we look forward to going one better next year and challenging for a podium finish!

Although it was a whole team effort, recognition must go to;

  • Hannah Seaborn: U13 Age Champion

It was a great day at HBF Stadium on Wednesday for the SSWA Water polo championships. Up against quality opposition the team finished 3rd overall out of 14 teams which is a fantastic result. Highlights from the Past Two Weeks听

Multicultural Week听

This week the College celebrated Languages week. Our Languages staff organised activities throughout the week to highlight the beauty of Multicultural Week.

Year 7 Italian students enjoyed authentic pizza, while Year 8 Italian students enthusiastically participated in an Italian Tarantella dancing workshop. Following an awe-inspiring lunch time performance on the Marcellin campus, Japanese Taiko drummers then ran a workshop for the Year 7 Japanese students to teach them about the beauty and power of the instruments.

The College community was entertained by Frank, the Italian accordion player, as well as by a talented Italian singer. A crowd favourite was the gelato van where students lined up for their delicious scoop.

We encourage our students to be curious and inclusive of all cultures and languages in their great diversity. This is the spirit of Languages Week at 今日吃瓜.

Year 7 Disco听

Year 7 students had a wonderful evening at the Disco on Thursday evening. The auditorium was transformed into a fluro-themed disco where students danced the night away and were entertained with fun games and organised by the Year 12 Student Leaders. Congratulations to Daniel McGough and Liam Payne for taking out the air guitar competition!

A big thank you to the Year 12 Student Leaders, Mrs听Bramanto, Year 7 PCG Teachers and Miss Johnson for a fantastic night!

Student Use of E-cigarettes听

Adolescent use of e-cigarettes or vapes is unfortunately becoming a more common issue across schools in Australia. I would like to take this opportunity to remind families and students that the possession and use of an e-cigarette at school, regardless of the content of the e-cigarette, is strictly prohibited. Students who are found to be in possession of an e-cigarette on College grounds or who are using one in College uniform will have their enrolment at the school suspended immediately.

As a parent, you hold a significant amount of influence over your child鈥檚 actions. Openly talking to your child about difficult topics such as vaping can support them in their decision making and encourage good choices. Before you begin this important conversation with your child, you may wish to learn more about vaping at the following links:

If you require any further support, please do not hesitate to contact your child鈥檚 Leader of Wellbeing

Sports Uniform听听听

There has been an increase in students wearing their Sports Uniform at school. The Sports Uniform is not an alternative to the Winter Uniform and correspondence from parents and guardians is required if a student is wearing the incorrect uniform. I thank you for your support in maintaining high standards for uniform and grooming.

Discord App听

Discord is a popular app and website amongst adolescents which has evolved into a communication platform. Discord is targeted towards teenagers and adults where users can communicate with each other through voice, video or text. Any user can have an account without disclosing their true identity and unfortunately there is a real possibility that users could be misrepresenting themselves, exposing teens to grooming, predators and other potential online dangers.

There are several things that parents can do to help their child minimise safety risks on Discord. Go through the terms and conditions and community guidelines together to help them understand exactly what is and isn’t acceptable and what they should do if they ever feel unsafe. Encourage them only to accept friend requests from, and join servers with, people they know and trust. Make sure they have set up the explicit content and safety filters in their account. Utilise the operating system’s parental controls on their device.

If your child is using the Discord App, I would encourage you to learn more about the app and how you can increase your child鈥檚 safety on the App听.

On the day of the Carnival, students (Yr听12’s exempt) will arrive at the听Sports Complex at 7am sharp in full PE uniform with their navy blue ‘warm up’ shirts over the top and tracksuits.听There is no canteen, so students also require their own food and drink bottle for the day.

Geography ATAR Highlights听

Year 11

It was another glorious day for the Year 11 Geography students to venture into the field. The students have been investigating the reasons for and consequences of the changing spatial distribution of production and consumption of a food based good and an element of culture. We began our adventure with a stop off to view the incoming and outgoing air traffic movements at Perth Airport. We were lucky enough to explore Upper Reach Winery and be guided through the production process from vine to table by the owner. Our final stop was a tour of Optus Stadium to investigate the impact of such a stadium has on the diffusion of elements of culture. The students applied their knowledge to a real-life experience, collecting and analysing data and experiencing the world of Geography.

Year 12

On a sunny but chilly winters day, the Year 12 ATAR Geography students ventured out of the classroom on our final field excursion. The intrepid geographers, began their day in the CBD before crossing the river and heading south to Cockburn Central, an example of a strategy to combat Perth鈥檚 urban sprawl. We then headed back to the CBD to further investigate examples of urban processes and urban renewal strategies in Elizabeth Quay, East Perth and the Perth City Link, Yagan Square and the Perth Cultural precinct. The students got a glimpse into real world planning from a top line up of Western Australian Planning Commission (WAPC) and Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage professionals during a visit to the City this week. WAPC Chairman David Caddy along with senior Department directors Michael Daymond, Lorissa Kelly, Janine Egan and Phillip Elliot met with the students to share their own career journeys and provide insight into elements of local planning relevant to the students鈥 ATAR studies. With a focus on urban sprawl and transport issues, topics included an overview of the WAPC; the Perth City Deals project to activate the CBD through city-based university campuses; the importance of good design and managing density in urban planning; and METRONET. A final and fabulous end to two years of studying Geography.

Year 8 #no2drugs Presentation听

Guest Speaker, Jacob Hill shared his 鈥楽ay听No to Drugs鈥 message with the Year 8 Students on Wednesday 18 August. Jacob took us inside his world of despair,听helplessness, and听teenage drug addiction. After a near death experience and successful rehabilitation Jacob shared his story and empowers kids to say #no2drugs. The depth and magnitude of his story was eye-opening, moving,听and caught me and many of my friends off guard. I enjoyed listening to Jacob鈥檚 story as he presented the issue as it was and explained it to us as young adults, not children.

STEM

Over the past two weeks, we have been celebrating our STEM Festival at 今日吃瓜, an event which combines the celebrations of Science, Technology and Math Weeks into one big, fun-filled fortnight! A number of activities have taken place each day, all met with great enthusiasm from staff and students alike.

Week 5 began on Tuesday with a Virtual Reality (VR) Experience, where students had the opportunity to explore worlds beyond our own by using VR headsets. On Wednesday, students were treated to a wildlife show, brought to us once again by the wonderful WestOz Wildlife. Students had the opportunity to pat a koala, dingo and lizards, and got to hold real snakes! On Thursday, in the gymnasium, a large number of students competed to see who could create the best paper plane, judged on both distance flown (won by Austin Sickinghe (Yr 10)) and hang time (won by Matthew Lao (Yr 7) and Leo Felton (Yr 10)). Finally, on Friday, a new event aligned with National Science Week鈥檚 theme of 鈥楩ood: Different by Design鈥 was held, with students able to make their own instant sherbet and instant ice-cream.

Things were bigger and better in Week 6, with even more activities on offer! On Monday, students submitted their STEM-themed cakes as part of a baking competition, with Yr 7 students Lulu Brickland, Alyssa Petracca, Micaela Buddle and Ava Tolley winning the judge鈥檚 award. Monday also kick-started our e-Sports competition, with students competing in teams to see who comes out on top in the popular game, Rocket League (finals yet to be held). On Tuesday, students were challenged to create the longest snake possible out of either a Mintie wrapper or lolly snake. Jasmine Ford (Yr 8) and Anica Alo (Yr 8) took out first place in these two categories respectively, with Luca Vulinovich (Yr 7), Isaiah Lopez (Yr 8), Matthew Lao (Yr 7) and Ben Giumelli (Yr 10) all placing in runner-up positions. On Wednesday, Mr Shuckstes and Mr Gerreyn put on a great show on the oval, sending up rockets and blowing up dry ice bombs. On Thursday, it was our staff that got treated to their very own Science-themed morning tea, catered by the wonderful Marilyn Fleming, an ex-Newman staff member, while students competed in our Newman鈥檚 own version of Countdown, presented with a series of numbers, and having to work out the math behind them. Finally, our STEM Festival ended on Friday with a symbol treasure hunt at recess, and a 鈥榩i鈥 challenge at lunch, where students were fittingly rewarded with, you guessed it, a pie.

Thank you to all students who have participated so enthusiastically in these events. Finally, and most importantly, thank you to all staff in the Science, Mathematics and Technology Departments for their hard work in organising all of these events. STEM Festival wouldn鈥檛 be such a success without your effort and passion for all things STEM!

Book Week听 2021- Marcellin Campus

On the Marcellin Campus this week, students completed a Book Week Kahoot in their English classes and some short creative writing exercises to test their imagination and creativity.

There were photos of some staff鈥檚 favourite books where students needed to guess who the bookshelves belonged to. Accompanying this were photos of students reading in their English classes rolled out on the screens of the St John Henry Newman Learning Hub.

Budding writers in Years 7-10 participated in the 鈥榃rite a Book in a Day鈥 incursion with Miss Ognenis and Mr Hofman. We look forward to reading the finished publications!

Staff are always keen for a dress up and to reminisce about their childhood, so on Thursday staff across the campus dressed up as some iconic book characters. From Wonder Woman, to Where鈥檚 Wally, to Puss in Boots, to Miss Trunchbull- there were a range of classic characters from 鈥極ld Worlds, New Worlds, Other Worlds鈥 that students interacted with throughout the day.

The Marcellin staff came together for Morning Tea provided by the English Department on Friday, and took home some new books for the weekend as part of 鈥楾ake a book, leave a book鈥 swapping activity.

We hope all staff and students enjoyed Book Week 2021!

Thursday 9听September听2021 is the听national day of action听dedicated to reminding everyone that every day is the day to ask, 鈥淎re you OK?鈥 and support those struggling with life’s ups and downs. To acknowledge R U OK Day students will be permitted to wear their sports uniform with yellow accessories.

The 2021 R U OK Day message is听Are they听really听OK? Ask them today.

Young people cannot be expected to fix someone鈥檚 problems, nor know the best way to help and support.听However,听they can listen to what their friend is saying, let them know they care and tell a teacher, school counsellor or trusted adult if they are worried about their friend. By promoting an environment of positive peer support and accessing support channels via an adult, young people can learn that asking, 鈥淎re you OK?鈥 is a key life skill.

Useful contacts when a young person is not OK:

  • School counsellor, GP or psychologist
  • Kids Helpline on 1800 55 1800
  • Lifeline on 13 11 14
  • Dial 000 if someone鈥檚 life is in imminent danger

Student Attendance听

Going to school every day is an important part of your child鈥檚 education. Students who regularly attend school will help students develop important skills and knowledge to help them learn in an enriched environment, and cultivate social and emotional skills such as resilience, communication, and collaboration.

It is a legal requirement for all children of compulsory school age attend school every day. In order to access the full curriculum, and give students the best chance of success, students need to attend school on a regular basis; 90% – 100% of the time. As parents you can encourage and promote regular attendance by:

  • Make sure your child attends school every day unless they are ill.
  • Have a regular morning routine that helps your child prepare for school.
  • Work collaboratively with your child鈥檚 PCG Teacher or Leader of Wellbeing to solve any problems your child might be having at school.
  • Plan vacations during non-school days.
  • Schedule your child鈥檚 medical appointments outside of school time where possible.
