At Marcellin, we are encouraging our students to have a shared responsibility in how we work together each day. While this can be something as simple as how we interact and treat each other, it can also involve how we respect the learning environment we are privileged to have here at Newman. We have an increasing number of student led groups that are working towards enhancing College life for the benefit of their peers, while our Year 11 student leaders are currently undertaking their Leadership Program in preparation for their nominations for leadership positions in 2020. I am grateful for the high level of participation from our students and wish our Year 11 leaders all the best for the coming weeks.

Respect for Space

While normally students conduct themselves in a pleasant and respectful manner, we have unfortunately had an increased amount of damage around the school. While this can take many forms, there are two main types I would like to highlight.

The first is rubbish around the school. While students are normally good with putting away their rubbish, it is a good time to remind each person about keeping our school clean and valuing the facilities we have. The College has a student environmental group who have been encouraging us all to be more mindful with recycling and how we look after our wonderful school facilities.

The second area is the damage that has occurred to our toilet facilities. Unfortunately, we have seen a spike in deliberate damage done to our facilities and this impacts on all students. If students notice any damage, or people not respecting our facilities, they are expected to contact their Leader of Wellbeing so the appropriate action can occur.

College Uniform

We have been making a conscious effort to ensure our students are adhering to the and presenting themselves in a respectful manner. We are pleased with the way the majority of our students conduct themselves each day, and we have also been impressed with the response from students who have been challenged to improve. I would encourage all students from Years 7 to 12 to maintain these high standards throughout the remainder of Semester Two.

School Shoes

In recognising feedback from some students and parents, it is also important that I clarify the uniform standard regarding school shoes. School shoes are to be black leather lace-up, not boot style, sport, skate, suede or platform soles. Any students who are not in compliance should have been notified and given a time period to resolve the issue.

I appreciate the support received from students and parents regarding this matter.

Thursday 12 September is R U OK? Day 鈥� a day when we鈥檙e reminded to ask, 鈥淎re you OK?鈥� and to remember every day of the year to support people who may be struggling with life鈥檚 ups and downs. At 今日吃瓜, we know that regular meaningful conversations can make a difference. You do not have to be an expert to ask how someone is going. This year in the build-up to R U OK? day we are shining a light on the times we should be asking our friends and loved ones this important question. We want everyone in our school community to know that if something is up with someone you know, if something is going on in their life or you notice a change in what they鈥檙e doing or saying, it鈥檚 time to trust that gut instinct and ask them 鈥淎re you OK?鈥�

To spread this message, we will be hosting an awareness raising event at the Marcellin Campus on the national day of action Thursday 12 September (Week 8). Yellow cupcakes will be sold at recess, and during lunchtime there will be a sausage sizzle, games and a band in Founders Court. Students are invited to wear yellow accessories on the day to show their support.

Years 9 and 10 Singapore Learning Immersion

今日吃瓜 recognises the challenge and importance of creating resilient, global thinkers; students who are agile, collaborative and embracing of the demands of the 21st Century.

Inspired by the College鈥檚 an international partnership with Republic Polytechnic Singapore has been established. The College was pleased to launch the Singapore Learning Immersion with the Years 9 and 10 students and parents last week.

Assessment Guidelines and Procedures

Years 7-10

Please download and refer to the full Assessment Guidelines and Procedures below. Parents and guardians are reminded that missing an in-class assessment due to an unapproved absence, such as being on holidays, will result in a score of zero for that assessment. Getting a zero for an assessment is not desirable for all parties. Parents and students are requested to make every effort to avoid such a situation.

Years 11 and 12

Please download and refer to the full Assessment Guidelines and Procedures below. If a student is absent for an in-class assessment, a medical certificate is required to avoid a zero. If the unplanned absence is merely on the due date for an assignment or project, the task should be submitted electronically or via Student Reception. Parents and guardians are reminded that missing an in-class assessment due to an unapproved absence, such as being on holidays, will result in a score of zero for that assessment. The Assessment Guidelines and Procedures has been update to more explicitly address work due for Certificate courses.

Missed Assessments Years 7-12

The priority is for students to be in the classroom with their teacher when returning from absence. To maximise time within the classroom and to ensure assessment conditions are monitored, the College provides three times per week for missed assessments to be completed:

• Tuesday morning 7.45am
• Wednesday afterschool 3.20pm
• Friday morning 7.45am
