Feast of the Assumption

Today, Thursday 11 August we celebrated Assumption Day as one whole K-12 Community, and as a part of our Wellbeing Week. We started the day with the Eucharist and then moved to a lapathon, followed by buddy activities in the Primary. Assumption Day is the chosen Feast Day of the Marist Brothers, which is 15 August. Assumption is the doctrine that Mary the mother of Jesus was taken (assumed) into heaven, body and soul, following the end of her earthly life. The meaning of the doctrine is that Mary鈥檚 full redemption involved a glorification of her complete personality 鈥 it is appropriate for both her human body and her soul to be reunited with God given her impeccable nature whilst present on earth. This glorification, or celebrated salvation, anticipates the promised state offered to all humankind wanting to follow Jesus through Mary鈥檚 example. One of our important Marist quotes that guides our aspirational way of being is 鈥榓ll to Jesus through Mary鈥. Mary is our model for Presence and Simplicity. Her surrender and humble acceptance of her significant place in the Church and in the world, epitomises what it means to live 鈥榠n the way of Mary鈥. The theme for the day was Connected, which gave our students the opportunity to connect with their faith, teachers and with each other as one College Community.

Diagnostic Inventory of School Alignment (DISA): URGENT Parental Assistance Required

As mentioned in earlier correspondence, 今日吃瓜 is committed to annual school improvement, and we are seeking feedback from all members of our community to refine practices. This requires your engagement through the completion of the DISA survey.

The DISA is a longitudinal survey that evaluates the perceptions of students, parents and staff on the progress of school improvement strategies and our Vision for Learning. It would be greatly appreciated if you could complete the survey鈥. It is anonymous, no log-in or password are required, and it takes approximately 20 minutes to complete. Your responses will play a valuable part in shaping the strategic vision of 今日吃瓜 for the years to come.

Sincere thanks for your ongoing support.

Winter Music Night

Last Monday the College showcased the talents of students in the Marcellin Chamber Ensemble, SIP Band, Concert Winds, Newman Voices, Senior Concert Band, Contemporary Rock Bands, Glee and Ruah. Newman News Term 3 Week 4: From the Principal

Dear Parents and Guardians

Wellbeing Week

This week we celebrated wellbeing with a particular focus on gratitude.  Gratitude is the quality of being thankful, a readiness to show appreciation for and to return kindness.  As a Marist school a key characteristic is our Family Spirit.  As a school of 1900 it is this family spirit that binds us in how we walk with each other and in the relationships that we cultivate.

In his book, the Kindness Revolution (2021), Hugh MacKay 鈥 a well-known sociologist, contends that we can restore hope, rebuild trust and inspire optimism through kindness.

In a world that has been so disrupted through COVID-19, geopolitical wars and the imperative of individualism and competition, showing gratitude, if not kindness, is fundamental to supporting the wellbeing of all people.

I attended the Years 9 and 12 assembly this week where students read out gratitude statements about their peers and teachers, a simple 鈥渢hank you for charging my laptop鈥, 鈥渢hank you for holding my books鈥 or 鈥渢hank you for saying hello鈥, were so powerful in their simplicity.  Our children are grateful for each other and for their families.  They imbue a Marist spirit that is predicated on the Gospel鈥檚 imperative of love.  Our Founder, St Marcellin Champagnat, asked his Brothers to know and love all people.  This is what we want for our College and this is why Wellbeing Week is one small step to ensuring every child, teacher and family member knows that they are valued, are valuable and are loved.

In a week when we celebrate the Feast of Saint Mary MacKillop of the Cross (8 August) and the Feast of the Assumption (15 August) it is appropriate that we reflect on our immediate and wider Marist family.  We give thanks for our Marist Brothers as they continue to provide support, wisdom and presence in our Marist Community.  I would like to welcome Br Joe Hughes as the newest member of our Marist Churchlands community and we look forward to his presence in our community.

Annual School Improvement Plan Intent – Sustainability

A key priority area in our Annual School Improvement Plan is Sustainability.  In 2022 we have committed to developing 鈥sustainable practices to support an ongoing commitment to the protection of the environment and ongoing sustainability of College resources鈥, including recycling.

At our last Secondary School assembly, our College Student Leaders, Isabella O鈥橰ourke and Joshua Downes, challenged the students to consider how they could all be stewards for the environment.  They informed students that 鈥over the coming weeks we are trialling recycling and asking students If the recycling bins are filled with food scraps or with items other than the ones we have just mentioned, then everything in the yellow bins is placed in landfill and is not recycled. Landfill breaks down very slowly and can emit toxins into our soil and groundwater, becoming an environmental hazard for years to come. We ask you all for your support and cooperation in using the recycling bins properly so we can make a start becoming a more environmentally friendly school.鈥

Our Mini Marist at Lavalla have done the same.

Marist Schools Australia Biennial Conference, Brisbane

Last week, Vice Principal – Lucie McCrory, Deputy Principal Primary – Lisa McClue, Director, Mission and Catholic Identity – Simon Martino, and I attended the Marist Schools Australia National Conference in Brisbane.  Marists from around Australia and beyond gathered together for a series of symposiums and workshops.  今日吃瓜 presented two symposiums:

Learning Strand – To Live is to Change; to be Perfect is to have Changed often

Formation Strand – Vision for Mission: To Form 鈥淕ood Christians and Good Citizens鈥

Both presentations were well received and we enjoyed very positive feedback.  Overall, the conference was outstanding and an excellent opportunity for our leadership staff to promote the College鈥檚 School Improvement agenda as well highlight the central role of ministry at 今日吃瓜.

COVID- 19 Update

The Department of Health leads our state鈥檚 response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Advice from the Chief Health Officer is that mask wearing has proven to be a highly effective method of reducing the spread of COVID-19. The state government will continue to provide the public with timely and scientifically proven advice.  This information is updated regularly and can be found on .

Mask wearing is one of a number of measures we currently have in place to reduce the number of serious cases in the community and to protect ourselves from COVID-19. Whilst strongly encouraged, mask wearing is not mandatory except when travelling on public transport (including school buses) and when following the testing and isolation protocols as a close contact.

Working together, we can all help to reduce the transmission of COVID-19 in our school.

Newman News Term 3 Week 4: From the Deputy Principal Primary

There have been lots of things happening across the primary school in the past fortnight, and lots of wonderful achievements to celebrate. Well done to everyone who has worked so hard to achieve their personal best across a range of different pursuits. It is always a joy to celebrate students across these different endeavours.

We have also had a wonderful Wellbeing Week, where our students have been able to reflect on and participate in a range of activities that foster and promote their personal wellbeing. The week culminated in our Assumption Buddy Day and Lapathon. It was amazing to see students complete the lapathon alongside their buddies, as well as the Marcellin secondary students. The theme of connect, was realised as they enjoyed the sunshine and came together to raise funds for Marist Solidarity.

Year 5 and 6 Da Vinci Decathlon Students

The Da Vinci Decathlon is an academic competition designed to challenge and stimulate the minds of school students. Students compete in engineering, Mathematics, code breaking, art and poetry, Science, English, ideation, creative producers, cartography and legacy tasks in a collaborative team of 8.

Well done to our Year 5 team who were awarded first place for Art and Poetry and our Year 6 team who were awarded third place for Art and Poetry.

Speak Up Awards

On Wednesday afternoon, our three finalists from the Speak Up Awards competition took a trip to the Freemason Club in Doubleview for the second round of competition. Amazingly, all three students were successful in delivering another round of amazing speeches! Congratulations to Grace, Stef, and Isla who will now go through to the preliminary finals of the competition. These students are to be congratulated for their excellent efforts. We would also like to acknowledge Mrs Hatchett for all of her hard work in supporting these students through this competition.

Assembly

Last Friday, students in 5 Blue took to the stage to bring us on a wonderful journey of their learning so far this year through a creative ‘Dora the Explorer’ theme. It was great to see students presenting their learning in such a creative and engaging way. We also acknowledged a number of award winners across the College, celebrating their recent achievements. Well done to all students on their success to begin the term.

Year 1 Excursion 鈥 Kalamunda History Museum

In line with their History Unit, our Year 1 students headed to Kalamunda History Museum to experience what it was like in the past. They had a wonderful time, despite the wet weather, and gained a greater appreciation and understanding for how the world has changed and developed over time.

Pre-Primary Excursion 鈥 Perth Zoo

Lions and Tigers and Bears!! Well, that was just a few of the animals that our Pre-Primary students saw on their visit to Perth Zoo. I was lucky enough to hear about the zoo experience directly from some of our students, as they recounted their favourite animals in class. The zoo visit has since been a great scaffold into some fantastic pieces of writing for the students.

Student Wellbeing

As part of our Wellbeing Week celebrations this week, I spoke with a number of students about our Marist theme for 2022 which is Known and Loved: Dignity for all. The word dignity is derived from the Latin word dignitas meaning, ‘being worthy of honour or respect’. This is the very heartbeat of the Gospel, and as young people in a Christian community, we spoke about how we are called to live the Gospel values in demonstrating our commitment to the dignity of others in both our words and actions.

The parable of the Good Samaritan illustrates this perfectly. In this story, a Jewish man who is beaten and robbed, lies in pain while a priest and a Levite (assistant priest) pass him by. Finally, it is a Samarian man who stops to assist, clean his wounds, and take him to an innkeeper to be looked after. To really appreciate the scale of these actions, we need to understand that historically, Jewish people and Samarians were in a conflict with each other that went back a thousand years meaning they were very likely to avoid helping or assisting each other at any cost. And yet in this instance, it is only the good Samaritan who stops to help the Jewish man.

The lesson here for our students, and even our community, is that every person we encounter is worthy of dignity; of being both honoured and respected – even those who we might see as our enemies. As young people in a Christian community, our students are responsible for making Jesus Christ known and loved to each other through their words and actions, especially to the least, the lost, and the invisible. I have encouraged students this week to reflect on who those people in our community may be, and what role they can play in brining Christ to them. Every person in our community, child and adult, has a story, and every person hopes for that story to be heard, to be acknowledged, and to be understood. In taking the time to do this, we are helping to create a community that is loving, nurturing, and Christ centred. This is what it means to be a part of 今日吃瓜.

I hope that all of our students have enjoyed the unique opportunities of Wellbeing Week, and that families have a very safe, and relaxing time together over the long weekend.

Leader of Wellbeing (Primary)

Newman News Term 3 Week 4: From the Director of Mission and Catholic Identity

鈥淲ithout Mary we are nothing and with Mary we have everything, because Mary always has her adorable Son within her arms or in her heart鈥. – St Marcellin Champagnat鈥&苍产蝉辫;

The Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, is a significant Feast Day in the life of the Church and in the life of our Marist Community. This day was chosen by St Marcellin Champagnat to be the Patronal Feast Day of the Little Brothers of Mary, now known as the Marist Brothers. It is celebrated annually on the 15 August. In reflecting on the Assumption of Mary I am drawn to the understanding of Mary as a young woman who said 鈥榶es鈥 to bring Christ into the world with a complete trust in God and God鈥檚 plan for her. St Marcellin Champagnat, in constantly looking to Mary, sought to bring about the same attitude of 鈥榶es鈥 in the first Marists and we at 今日吃瓜 hope we can continue to live this dream with our young people, staff and the wider community. To our Marist Brothers and all who connect to our Marist charism, Happy Feast of the Assumption.

As a community, we celebrated this day with Mass for the College, followed by our Lapathon. This linked with our Wellbeing Week theme of connect, where all our students from K-12 connect with one another as they walk around the ovals and connect to their faith through the sacraments. Students from K-6 have been encouraged to find sponsorship for the number of laps they will complete, and 7-12 asked to consider bringing in a donation, all for LifeLink who support a number of Catholic outreach agencies across our local community. Families can learn more about this organisation online by clicking: or watch our students explain Lifelink

Families who prefer can make a donation to LifeLink via our College website here

St Vincent De Paul Winter Solidarity

On July 29, a range of Marcellin students gathered after school together with Year 6 Mini Marists and cooked close to 200 meals for St Vincent de Paul. On such a cold and blustery night, the Bolognese was very well received by Tom’s House in the city.

Other students created well wishes cards to present later this term to the Nyoongar Outreach Services Inc, along with gift bags of sanitary items to be donated by our Year 12 cohort in their student-led fundraiser.

Following this, the group participated in a workshop about poverty in Australia.  The night was very successful with its fun and educational activities.  Students felt motivated to create positive changes in their own contexts and brainstormed ideas to improve awareness in our College of the daily plight of thousands of Australians living in poverty.

Game Changers

Our Marist Youth Ministry Program Game Changers, continues to bring together our students in Year 7 鈥 12 and our Mini-Marists in Year 5 and 6. The purpose of the program is to help our students build a sense of belonging, developing their knowledge and skills in leadership, create opportunities for service and explore their faith story. Students gather with their teachers either at lunch time or on a Tuesday afternoon. Our Year 11 Game Changers group are preparing to head to Mullewa on their Solidarity Immersion, where they will spend a week working with the Mullewa community. This is a fantastic opportunity for our Year 11 students to step outside their comfort zone and learn more about regional WA.

Any parents who would like their child to become involved please contact Aleisha Bryson.

Marist Connect Night

Being part of a Marist connection offers unique opportunities for our students. On Tuesday 23 August, Year 11 and 12 students are invited to join a Marist Connect Night with students from Bunbury Catholic College and St Joseph鈥檚 Northam. Any Year 11 or 12 student who wishes to attend must contact Aleisha Bryson via email Aleisha.Bryson@newman.wa.edu.au or complete this form . This is a great opportunity to build connection with other young Marists and grow as young leaders in our community.

Sacramental Celebrations

Our Year 7 students had the opportunity to participate in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Fr Mark from the Redemptorist Monastery in North Perth led the celebration with students, reminding them of the importance of reflecting on our behaviour and the decisions we make that can damage our relationships with God, self and others. Students were encouraged to think about ways they can maintain positive relationships and seek forgiveness when necessary. The Sacrament of Reconciliation is an important sacrament because it allows us to acknowledge our failings and seek to restore those relationships we may damage due to our actions/choices. Year 8 and Year 9 students will have the opportunity to participate in the sacrament later this term.

Thursday Morning Mass

Our Thursday morning Mass returns in Week 5. Hosted by students in Mackillop Guild and Year 3 Red. Week 6 Community Mass is hosted by Camara Guild and Year 3 Blue. We look forward to seeing students and families in attendance. Mass is from 8.10am 鈥 8.40am. All are welcome.

Newman News Term 3 Week 2: From the Director of Mission and Catholic Identity

On 23 July Marists across the world celebrated the birth of the Marist dream which started with twelve seminarians in 1816, when they climbed the steep steps to the to the Fourvi猫re鈥痗hapel in Lyon to pledge themselves 鈥as soon as possible, establish a most holy congregation of Marists.鈥濃疶his foundational event in began the Marist story for Marist Fathers, Marist Sisters, Marist Missionary Sisters, Marist Laity and Marist Brothers. We continue to ask for Mary鈥檚 guidance and support of our Marist Mission as we like our founder St Marcellin Champagnat, to make Jesus Christ known and loved.

This term our Ministry team continue to work with students in Game Changers, our Living Marist Christian Service-Learning Program, Mini-Marists and liturgies and Masses across the PK-12 community. This term our students will participate in the Mullewa Solidarity trip, Lifelink Fundraiser on Assumption Day and many exciting liturgies and Masses that will encourage them to reflect on their relationships with each other, creation, self and God. We wish everyone a fantastic Term 3 and like Mary, that we say 鈥榶es鈥 to the many opportunities that come our way.

Staff Faith Formation

As part of our commitment to formation for staff in 2022, Br Tony Leon visited the College on July 18 to facilitate an excellent Faith Formation Day for both teaching and non-teaching staff. Based around this year鈥檚 Marist theme of 鈥淜nown and Loved 鈥 Dignity for All鈥 the day included large and small group discussions and offered staff the opportunity to consider a range of issues such as poverty, displaced people, mental health and the experience of First Nation peoples. Ongoing opportunities for staff faith formation is aligned to our Strategic Directions 鈥楢 Catholic School in the Marist Tradition鈥

Assumption Day Celebrations

The Feast Day of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Feast Day chosen for the Patronal Feast of the Marist Brothers is Monday 15 August. To mark the significance of these events, our K-12 Community will come together in celebration on Thursday 11 August.  As one of 54 Marist schools across Australia, the Feast Day of the Assumption is an opportunity to gather, give thanks to the Marist Brothers, and celebrate our shared Marist identity.

Information about this important event was emailed to parents on Monday July 25. Please see a copy here

Students from K-6 will be fundraising through a commitment to walking laps in the annual lapathon.

Secondary students are encouraged to bring in a minimum of $5 to assist with our fundraising initiative as they also join the primary students walking around our ovals.

Families who wish to contribute online can do so by clicking here.

Year 10 Retreat 28 July

Yesterday the Year 10 students came together to participate in a Retreat facilitated by the Youth Ministry Team. The Retreat Day follows our Vision for Mission to form 鈥淕ood Christians and Good Citizens鈥 as we offer students an opportunity away from the normal school routine to pause and reflect on their relationship with others, themselves and God. These experiences have shown to be positive and rewarding for our students.

The Year 10 Retreat focused on recognising and developing leadership capacity with the following aims;

  • For students to appreciate their own worth, as a starting point of their leadership journey.听
  • For students to understand what leadership looks like and the relationship between Leadership and Service.听
  • That students would encounter the core Gospel values that drive true servant leadership.听
  • That students would recognize that it is both possible and desirable to develop a personal relationship with Jesus, to help them serve as He served.

St Vincent de Paul Winter Solidarity event 29 July

This afternoon, 29 July, students on the Marcellin Campus and our Year 6 Mini Marists will have the opportunity to participate in the St Vincent de Paul Winter Solidarity event.  The Australian Bishops鈥 Catholic Social Justice Statement on Social Justice 2022 鈥 2023 is Respect: Confronting Violence and Abuse.

In this Social Justice Statement, the Bishops鈥 assert Our relationships should be 鈥渕arked by equality and reciprocity rather than domination and violence, respect and freedom rather than coercion and control鈥. The Statement affirms the work being done by faith communities and organisations to support those who experience domestic and family violence and abuse, and to address the drivers and enablers of violence. This includes the issue of spiritual and discusses how religious teachings 鈥 including our own 鈥 may be manipulated by perpetrators to excuse violence or to exert control over others. It points to further ways in which we can all respond to spiritual violence. Finally, it calls for faith communities to support and believe those going through domestic and family violence and abuse, to hold perpetrators to account and work towards individual and social transformation.

We believe that respect, dignity and justice, transformation and hope are possible.鈥&苍产蝉辫;
~ Social Justice Statement on Social Justice 2022 鈥 2023

Students participating in the Winter Solidarity event will explore and learn about homelessness in Australia, Catholic Social Teaching, and what they can do as individuals and as a community to help address the issue.

Students will also conduct a cook-up with food being donated to those suffering from homelessness.

St Vincent de Paul Blanket Appeal

This winter many families will be forced to spend the night without adequate warmth, or in some cases without adequate shelter.

The 今日吃瓜 Community endeavours to imitate Mary’s tenderness and concern for others, particularly the way she lived out her faith with courage in the face of great pain and adversity. Donating a blanket is a simple way to follow Mary鈥檚 example and to live the Gospel Message to 鈥Love your neighbour鈥 (Mark 12:31).

For the beginning of Term 3 families are invited to donate blankets for the鈥疭t Vincent de Paul Winter Blanket Appeal.鈥疊lankets should be in good condition, recently cleaned and free from pet hair. When donating a blanket to the Winter Appeal, please consider 鈥淲ould I give this blanket to a friend?鈥.  Ensuring the blankets are in a good condition upholds the dignity of those who are receiving the goods.

Donations can be made at all three College Campuses:
Marcellin: Champagnat Chapel
Lavalla: Administration Office
Marian: Administration Office

The final day to donate is Friday 19th August 2021.鈥By actively engaging in this appeal, we continue to support community engagement to the marginalised. Your kind donation of blankets will help to keep families safe and warm this winter season.

Thank you in advance for your generous donations.

Thursday Morning Community Mass

All students, families, friends and community members are warmly invited to join us for this peaceful and restorative start to the day. Taking place in the Champagnat Chapel on a Thursday morning, Mass begins at 8.10am and concludes at 8.40am.
