Vision for Learning Shine through Discovery – Let your light shine (Matthew 5:16) in 2019

At the start of the school year, we reflect on the wonderful achievements of the year before; the Graduating Class of 2018. It is fitting that as a College community we do this to express our recognition and gratitude to teaching and support staff who have supported and guided the students throughout their schooling. We also recognise the individual and collective effort from students and their families; particularly as they encounter times of assessment, challenge and celebration. The success of the Class of 2018 extends beyond their notable academic achievements. The students demonstrated their commitment to College life by immersing themselves in the wide and varied opportunities afforded to them; using their gifts and talents for the betterment of the College community. In this new year, I encourage all students and families across our PK-12 community to be involved in the many opportunities provided at the College which aim to develop and support the learning and wellbeing of all our students.

Professional Learning

I extend my sincere thanks and gratitude to all teaching and non-teaching staff in their preparation for the 2019 academic year. The College staff celebrated the Eucharist together and engaged in a series of professional learning workshops facilitated by College staff and external facilitators as well as preparing their classrooms for Day 1. The dedication and commitment of all staff is truly inspirational and has ensured a very smooth start to the year. We also welcomed new staff members to our Newman family and wish them a successful transition to our community. New staff participated in faith formation professional learning titled, In the Marist Way, which introduced them to our Marist story.

Parent Teacher Communication Protocol

At 今日吃瓜, all teachers have made a commitment that any formal, summative assessments are marked and shared with students and parents no later than within two weeks. Teachers from Marian and Lavalla Campuses utilise Seesaw to provide parents with feedback as well as returning marked work samples to students. On the Marcellin Campus, the marks are released on SEQTA within this two-week time frame and assessments are returned to students. Feedback from class activities and daily lessons are presented to students in a variety of different forms and all families can expect feedback for learning regularly across the term. Timely feedback is vital in the learning cycle for all students.

The College expects that teachers will respond to email communication within two working days. Teachers are not able to respond within one day as they are teaching classes, marking assessments, planning lessons, on yard duty or taking co-curricular activities. I ask parents to accept these timelines as reasonable turnaround times in the busyness of College life. If there is an urgent matter that needs to be acknowledged, a phone call to the Leader of Wellbeing may be the most appropriate avenue.

Newman Parents

The College is honoured to be hosting Dr Justin Coulson, one of Australia鈥檚 most respected relationships speakers, authors, and researchers to support our Newman Parents. Dr Coulson will be presenting two sessions on Monday 25 March:

9 Ways to a Resilient Child, 9.00am in the Marist Auditorium (This session is for Early Childhood parents only)

Parents will learn the psychological secrets that build their child’s sense of identity, strengths and growth mindset in order to perform better, be happier and build resilience. to read more.

Respectful Relationships 鈥� Love at Home, 7.00pm in the Marist Auditorium

In this session, you鈥檒l learn the best 鈥榬elationship rules鈥� for a happier family so home life really does feel loving鈥� most of the time followed by a Question and Answer session. to read more.

High Achievers Assembly

We extend our congratulations to the Graduating Class of 2018! High achieving students will be welcomed back for an assembly next week where they will share their strategies for success with students from Years 10 – 12. Our thanks extends to the teachers who have fostered a love of learning throughout the schooling journey of all students; especially to the teachers of Year 11 and 12 courses. Positive partnership and collaboration between families and the College is essential to quality relationships and success. Thank you to all parents and families for working so closely with the College. to review the results from the 2018 graduates.

Code of Conduct

A reminder to all families that the can be accessed via the College website. The Code is mandated by Catholic Education Western Australia and the application of the code extends to all staff, students, parents, guardians, caregivers and volunteers.

The Code seeks to value the dignity of every person, foster positive relationships, ensure confidentiality and accountability and support professional boundaries. Events held during school hours AND outside of school hours that are associated with the College are also supported by the Code of Conduct. Any perceived breaches of the Code can be discussed with any member of the Senior Leadership Team. We thank you in advance for your understanding and support of how we strive to partner positively with one another.

The Code of Conduct will be spoken to at Campus and Year group Information Evenings in the weeks ahead.

If there are any changes to your contact numbers, email address or home address, please ensure you advise the College Registrar via registrar@newman.wa.edu.au This will ensure your child鈥檚 enrolment record contains the most up to date details.

Food Allergy Reminder

As a result of recent news relating to the dangers of food allergies, 今日吃瓜 would like to offer a reminder to all families. 今日吃瓜 is a 鈥楴ut Aware鈥� school. It is NOT nut free. Families should be advised that the College cannot guarantee the absence of all nut products or traces of nuts within food across the College. Parents are strongly encouraged to speak with their child discouraging the sharing of food with others. It is pertinent that parents of any child with an identified allergy has completed a Medical Action Plan and discussed this with their child鈥檚 teacher. The College Canteen does provide a 鈥楴ut Aware鈥� service, but cannot guarantee that food and beverages served from the Canteen do not contain traces of Nuts, Crustaceans, Fish, Milk, Eggs, Sesame, Soybean and Wheat. If families are reliant on the Canteen for the provision of food and beverages to a child WITH an allergy, they are advised to contact the Canteen Manager, Donna McFadden. 鈥楬oly Today鈥� is the national theme which comes to each Marist community across Australia in 2019 from Pope Francis鈥� reflections on the call to holiness in today鈥檚 world. Pope Francis emphasises that we don鈥檛 need to look any further than our own street to experience the presence of God:

鈥業 like to contemplate the holiness present in the patience of God鈥檚 people: in those parents who raise their children with immense love, in those men and women who work hard to support their families, in the sick, the elderly religious who never lose their smile. It is a holiness found in our next-door neighbours, those who, living in our midst, reflect God鈥檚 presence鈥� (Gaudate et Exultate n.7).

In 2019, our 今日吃瓜 community will seek to live out Pope Francis鈥� call to each of us by embracing:

1. Joy and a sense of Humour
2. Boldness and Passion
3. Life in Community

As we make this bold journey together as a PK-12 community in 2019, may each of us set out anew, to pass beyond what is familiar, to the fringes and beyond to shape our College as a place where Jesus is alive, and in which each of us lets our light shine.

PK-12 Family Mass

Thank you to all students, families, and supporters of 今日吃瓜 who joined our PK-12 Family Mass on Wednesday 13 February on the Br Terence Gleeson Oval. This is the third year that this important whole-of-College annual event has been celebrated. The evening gave us the opportunity to come together as an intentional Catholic-Marist community, and to share the Eucharist together as we begin this year as a united community. The evening was also an opportunity for us to commission the Year 6 and Year 12 student leaders for 2019. The College is grateful for the support of neighbouring clergy who are great friends to 今日吃瓜, and who concelebrated our PK-12 Family Mass:

Year 11 Philippines Immersion – 2018

We congratulate the 14 Year 11 students from 今日吃瓜, and the two Year 11 students from our Marist sister-school (St Joseph鈥檚, Northam) who undertook the 2018 Year 11 Philippines Immersion. Our 2018 immersion contingent were accompanied by Miss Clare Cole (Leader of Youth Ministry & Advocacy), Mrs Rebecca Bramanto (Leader of Wellbeing Year 11, 2018) and Mr Daniel Lynch (Deputy Principal Mission & Catholic Identity). Since returning, these students have presented their experience of the Immersion to the PK-12 今日吃瓜 staff, and at the first Principal鈥檚 Assembly.

Plenary Council 2020 鈥� Listening & Dialogue (6 March 鈥� 2019)

In 2018, the 今日吃瓜 PK-12 staff undertook a Listening and Dialogue session for the Plenary 2020. In the coming weeks, different groups of students at 今日吃瓜 will also be given this opportunity to have their say regarding the future of the Catholic Church here in Australia as part of this national conversation.

Weekly Thursday Morning Community Mass (Champagnat Chapel 鈥� 8.10am 鈥� 8.35am)

All parents, guardians and families across our PK-12 College are invited to attend the weekly Thursday morning Mass celebrated by Fr Joseph Tran and Fr Mark Baumgarten. Our weekly 今日吃瓜 Community Mass is an important way that we as a Catholic community seek to nourish and live-out our faith in community with one another.

Due to the Year 7-12 Guild Swimming Carnival taking place in Week 3 (Thursday 21 February) there will be no Mass on this day. Mass will resume on Thursday 28 February (Week 4).

Primary Religious Education Coordinator Update

Change to Prayer Assemblies 鈥� Lavalla Campus

The Lavalla Prayer assemblies will now take place on Monday mornings at 8.50am in the Br Theophane Hall. Parents are still most welcome to join this opportunity for prayer led by our students.

Receiving a Sacrament in 2019

Families are reminded to visit their relevant parish website for all information regarding 2019 Sacrament dates and registration. Alternatively please听 to access parish website addresses via the College website. The enrolment dates vary, so please take the time to clearly understand the process for your parish. Students in Years 3, 4 and 6 will undertake the preparatory work in class so they are able to receive the Sacrament in their local parish.

Leader of Youth Ministry & Advocacy Update

Youth Groups

24/7 Youth Group

St Joseph鈥檚 Subiaco has started a 24/7 Youth Group. It is open to all youth in Years 6-12 and occurs every Friday night from 6:30pm 鈥� 8:30pm at the Subiaco Parish Upper Room. Next week is going to be another fun and exciting night with some amazing games, food and an emphasis on getting to know one another. We encourage everyone to come along and see what it鈥檚 all about! Floreat / Wembley Youth Group

St Cecilia鈥檚 Floreat / Wembley Youth Groups continues in 2019 every Sunday evening from 6.00pm 鈥� 8.00pm at the St Cecilia鈥檚 Parish Centre, 47 Peebles Road, Floreat. It is open to all youth in Years 6-12. At the next evening we will be exploring the first chapter of the story of the birth of Christ! Appreciation – Saint Vincent de Paul (SVdP) Christmas Hampers

National Remar Conference

The National Remar Conference was held from Sunday 10 February – Tuesday 12 February at The Hermitage, Mittagong, NSW. The conference, facilitated by the Marist Youth Ministry Leadership Team and the Marist Life Formation Team, brings together Remar Coordinators and Helms from around Australia in order to participate in workshops and practical thematic discussions, listen to keynote speakers about Remar and the 2019 Marist theme 鈥楬oly Today鈥�. It was a fantastic opportunity to network with those currently working within Youth Ministry in Marist Schools across Australia.

Laudato Si’ (On Care for Our Common Home)

Laudato Si’ is the second encyclical from Pope Francis. In it he appeals to “every person living on this planet” for an inclusive dialogue about how we are shaping the future of our planet. Pope Francis calls the Church and the world to acknowledge the urgency of our environmental challenges and to join him in embarking on a new path. This encyclical is written with both hope and resolve, looking to our common future with candor and humility. There鈥檚 an opportunity to take part in a Laudato Si鈥� weekend (8 – 10 March) in NSW. On Wednesday 13 February our PK-12 College community of staff, students and families gathered together on the Br Terence Gleeson Oval to celebrate the new school year, share in the Eucharist and witness the commissioning of the Year 6 and Year 12 Student Leaders.

This Mass is an integral part of our College life as we seek to continue to celebrate our Christian story and our College theme this year, consistent with other Marist Schools nationally, 鈥淲e are called to be Holy by living our lives with love and by bearing witness today鈥�.
