Pre Primary – Year 2 Athletics Carnival

On Thursday 26 September, the annual Pre Primary 鈥� Year 2 Athletics Carnival took place on the Lavalla Oval. In what was perfect conditions, the students enjoyed a fun and competitive day of athletics, competing in running races, novelty events and relays. to read more and see more photos from the day.

52 students represented 今日吃瓜 at the IPSHA Athletics Carnival on Thursday 19 September at All Saints College. The team competed with excellence, displaying a high level of sportsmanship and skill. 今日吃瓜 students broke three IPSHA records on the day;

Dockers Cup

A Years 5/6 team has been selected to play in the 2019 Docker鈥檚 Cup in November. The team is involved in weekly training sessions coached by Jaxon Bilchuris. The carnival will be held at City Beach Oval on Wednesday 6 November.

Touch Football

Over the last few weeks of Term 3, the Years 5 and 6 students have been engaged in Touch Football coaching clinics facilitated by Touch Football Australia. These coaching clinics culminated in a Touch Football round-robin during unit sport. The sessions provided fantastic opportunities for skill development. A team of 12 students has been selected from these sessions to represent 今日吃瓜 at an Interschool Carnival during Term 4.

ACC Athletics Carnival Results

The Athletics Team achieved a very pleasing result to finish top 5 and remain in A Division. In real terms, that means we finished 5th out of 64 schools as there are 8 Divisions in the ACC. to access all the results from the A Division Athletics Carnival.

ACC A Division competition is at the elite level. Congratulations to all students for backing yourselves in and performing with determination and pride. We were only three points off 4th and 33 points off 3rd. We now know we can match it with the best and look forward to the challenge of further improvement in 2020.

It has taken a lot of work to get to this point and recognition must go to all of the staff and coaches who have put a great deal of time and energy into best preparing our teams.

Special thank you to the following students who put the 鈥楾eam First鈥� and competed up an age group. This takes selflessness and courage, but this is what creates great teams and earns respect.

Senior Girls Water Polo Competition

The Year 9/10 Senior Girls Water Polo team competed in the School Sports WA championship this week at HBF Stadium. The girls started the day with a solid win over John XXIII College and carried their form right through the day to enter the grand final against Melville undefeated.

The team got off to a slow start but came together to take out the championship 11 – 6. A big thank you to the Newman Water Polo Club for providing coach, Nathan Carbone (Class of 2014) who supported the girls all day. This is the second year in a row Newman has claimed the title and we are looking forward to 2020.

Individual Accomplishments

2019 Sport Captain Ben Ramshaw and 1st XVIII Best and Fairest winner Jye Clark won premierships last weekend as part of the Claremont Colts Football Team. Old boys Callum Jameson, Steve Miller and Ronin O鈥機onnor were all major contributors in the win. To complete the Claremont/Newman association, Mr Bern Willett is the Team Manager.
Well done to Madeline Peou (Year 7) who competed at the recent National Netball tournament. WA came back with bronze, having beaten top States QLD, SA, NSW and VIC, something the state has never done before. Madi (pictured with the ball below) contributed very strongly to the team鈥檚 success and was named WA Player of the Tournament.
Congratulations to Nick Worley (Year 8). The West Australian Basketball League wrapped up last weekend and Nick was recognised by the League:

Antonia Poor (Year 11) has been selected in the Australian U18 Women鈥檚 Water Polo squad to train for the FINA World Championships in Israel next September. She will be travelling to Japan in November to compete against the Japanese team as part of her preparation. She is one of the youngest in the squad and should be extremely proud.

Marist Football

In the space of a week, Marist 18’s celebrated Grand Final victory in the Northern Conference and a District State Premiership.

True grit, skill and courage has seen the Marist 18’s take out two grand finals in a week, with 今日吃瓜 students making up almost half of the playing group.

The team was coached by Matt Angus, who recently guided Newman鈥檚 1st XVIII to grand final victory, and last year coached the 2018 Marist Year 11/12 team that took out the premiership.

The Marist 18’s arguably saved their best game for their premiership push against Quinns Bulls at Claremont Oval on Sunday 15 September, displaying high quality skills and tough team orientated play.

Marist defeated Quinns Bulls 10.5-65 to 2.6-18. Four out of the six best players are Newman students. The best players are as follows : J. Van Rooyen, J.Ciminata, A. Aves (Newman), E. McCallum (Newman), M. Romano (Newman), J. Walsh-Dwyer (Newman).

In a first, the team played a second grand final against fellow District winner Morley Bulldogs to determine the State District title. Both teams were extremely competitive but, despite only playing a week earlier, Marist dominated 10.9-69 to 4.6-30.

Newman Knights

The Newman Knights Hockey Club wound up their 2019 season in the best possible way with a thrilling Grand Final win for the J11/12 Boys last Friday.

Having taken out the Minor Premiership with only one loss all season to opponents Southern River, the game was locked at 1-1 after extra time. Penalty strokes decided the outcome with all five boys converting to win the game 6-5. Goal scorers were Connor Whelan, Tom Ariti, Morgan Keet, Max Hinch and Dominick Elliot.

All teams had lots of fun and showed great sportsmanship throughout a very busy season. The Mini Knights had 65 participants in 2019 ranging in age from Pre Primary – Year 4, and we held Hookin2hockey sessions in Terms 1 & 2 at 今日吃瓜 and Term 3 at St Dominics, Innaloo, with each program running for 6 weeks.

The J1/2鈥檚 to J11/12鈥檚 had 115 participants with teams in each age group, some playing together for the first time. Boys and girls play together in the younger age groups and we also had two mixed teams in both J5/6 and J7/8 age groups, as well as a J5/6 girls, J9/10 boys and the two J11/12 teams. Several teams had new players who joined in 2019 and our existing players quickly embraced these players to their team providing support and encouragement at every game.

Following their back to back B Grade Premiership wins in 2017 & 2018, our J11/12 Girls played in the higher Promotion A grade, which was a tough competition. Most of the girls also played in Senior teams all year with seven of the girls in Year 12 – their last year as Juniors. We also saw several of our J11/12 Boys playing Senior hockey with Tom Ariti ending the season as Runner Up Fairest and Best in our Men鈥檚 Promotion 1 team.

Congratulations to all our players, coaches, umpires and managers on a great season. 2020 will see us expand our six week Mini Knights program to include students in Years 5 & 6 wanting to try hockey for the first time before joining a team. The first Mini Knights will be in Term 1, 2020 at 今日吃瓜, kicking off with a come and try clinic on 10th Feb!

Faction Cross Country Carnival

The Years 3-6 Faction Carnival was a great success, with students engaged all day in track and field events as well as novelty events and ball games. Students showcased their athletic skills and celebrated the achievements of their team. to see more photos from the day.

STEM Festival

Earlier this term, the Lavalla Campus was abuzz with energy and engagement as our students were challenged to think outside the box and create arcade games from recycled materials as part of our STEM Festival. The day was a celebration of student creativity and collaboration. Reflections from staff were glowing as the students鈥� projects continued to amaze with their levels of innovation. At lunchtime the students were treated to a Science show by Mr Spriggins from the Marcellin Campus. They watched with eager anticipation as he set off 鈥榖ombs鈥� and rockets for his curious audience. to see more photos from the day.

The students鈥� hard work was celebrated in a wonderful way as a selection of the arcade games were featured on Channel 9 News as part of their coverage of Science Week. Occasions such as this deserve to be highlighted in the wider community as the STEM Festival is another excellent example of how we continue to live out our Vision for Learning. to see the Channel 9 live cross.

Lavalla Parent Workshops

This Term, we welcomed parents to join in a variety of learning and wellbeing workshops being offered at the Lavalla Campus. Our dedicated teachers worked hard to formulate workshops in literacy, numeracy, digital literacy and growth mindset.

Workshops offered were:

Growth Mindset 鈥� building resilience through the development of a growth mindset
Digital Literacy 鈥� the place and use of iPads at school and home, digital citizenship and online safety
Middle Primary Mental Maths 鈥� strategies and games for Years 3-4
Upper Primary Mental Maths 鈥� strategies and games for Years 5-6
Manga High 鈥� utilising Manga High for the development of mathematics skills with Years 5-6
Literacy 鈥� decoding text and comprehension strategies and their importance in literacy development

Book Week

Book Week at Lavalla was a wonderful celebration of reading and literacy across Years 3-6. Students enjoyed a variety of rich experiences including visits by authors, illustrators, storytellers, and embracing their creativity and love for books and characters with our annual Book Week parade. It was wonderful to see each of our students (and teachers!) display and share their costumes with the campus. to see more photos from the Book Week events.

Year 5 Leadership Workshops

Students in Year 5 hoping to be considered for nomination to Year 6 Student Council in 2020 have enjoyed partaking in three Leadership Workshops this Term. The sessions were themed as follows:

Vision for Learning
Wellbeing and Team building
Servant Leadership and Faith Formation

The student leadership process will continue moving into Term 4 as we work towards the election of the Year 6 Student Council in 2020.

It has been wonderful to see the students embrace this extra-curricular opportunity, attending before school weekly and participating with enthusiasm.

Life Education Van

This Term, all classes have enjoyed visiting the Life Education Van in support of their classroom learning in Health Education. Students have explored the following modules:

Year 3 鈥� Bcyberwise 鈥� focusing on cybersafety and exploring issues around security, sharing information and communicating respectfully.
Year 4 鈥� Mind Your Medicine 鈥� developing students鈥� understanding of medicines and their safe use, as well as strategies for dealing with stress and conflict.
Year 5 鈥� Decisions 鈥� exploring the decision-making process by looking at choices, consequences, responsibility, facts and influences; particularly in preparing for making decisions about the use of drugs and alcohol and their health impacts.
Year 6 鈥� Relate Respect Connect 鈥� exploring the importance of building positive, safe and respectful relationships both online and offline, as well as strategies for responding to unsafe or disrespectful situations.

Our annual visit from the Life Education Van is an invaluable inclusion to the Health curriculum and social-emotional learning taking place in classrooms.

Literacy Collective

One the most pleasing outcomes of the development of (Matthew 5:16) has been the alignment of the PK-12 College. Four years on, we are more connected than ever in the faith and learning continuum from the sandpit of Marian Campus to the Siena Learning Centre at Marcellin.

This was highlighted this week at our College Staff Professional Learning Meeting. A key strategic priority of our is to implement a coherent sequenced based framework for Literacy PK-12.

This year each teaching unit in the Primary School and faculty in the Secondary School have been collaborating to achieve this strategic priority. This has been supported by a wider Catholic Education WA (CEWA) initiative called the Literacy Collective where staff have received professional learning on the use of student data to improve literacy outcomes. The primary beneficiary of this project has been the increased student engagement in literacy and overall experience of learning.

The teaching staff presented their strategies at the meeting with video footage of our students and their response to this program. Their voice articulated a more collaborative engagement in their learning in the comprehension of functional and critical literacy. An example of this is demonstrated in our PK-2 Program. to watch the video.

As a teacher, the benefits of this project have been in the enthusiasm and commitment of our teaching staff to align and collaborate in our professional practice. In the Primary school this has been exemplified by the introduction of guided planning in each unit to ensure a consistency of approach in each class across each year group.

Our staff and students have developed a culture of presentation as a consequence of our Vision for Learning. We have deprivatized our classrooms, seeking to be more accountable, opening up our practice for critique with a view to support each individual student in their learning pathway. Staff are to be commended on this development and we look forward to our students bearing the fruit of their work.

Proposed International Marist Education Network

Globally, the Marist family is exploring the concept of an International Marist Schools Network. Echoing calls from the last Marist General Chapter held in Colombia in 2017 and the Marist International Mission Assembly held in Kenya in 2014, a group has been convened of Marists in leadership positions from different regions throughout the world to lead a process of consultation and discernment.

On the Feast of the Assumption 2019, people working in and associated with Marist schools in 80 countries across the globe are invited to respond to a short survey which has been translated into the four major language groups used by Marists: English, Spanish, French, and Portuguese.

Marist educators throughout the world are being invited to:

imagine the reality of an international network of Marist schools as a global family with an evangelizing action rooted in the world of school and education;
explore together the benefits this could bring to the children and young people whom Marists serve, as well as to their families.

Parents and Guardians are being invited to complete a short online survey. The survey has ambitious participation targets, which underscore the critical importance of every Marist educator鈥檚 voice – 100% of Marist Principals, 100% of Marist teachers and staff, 15% of students, 5-10% of parents, and an open invitation to all Marist Brothers and those Marist lay teachers who have moved to new employment or have retired. Similar to our own Australian Plenary Council consultation, the data gathered will be processed through computerised qualitative research tools, in this case undertaken by the internationally renowned Creativity Laboratory at the Marist University in Porto Alegre, Brazil.

PK-6 Assumption Day Lapathon

Congratulations to all students, families and friends of the Marian and Lavalla Campuses who came together to raise $10,307.15 as part of the annual Assumption Day celebrations and Lapathon.

Each dollar raised from the Lapathon will be directed towards supporting the Kuya Centre for Street Children in the Philippines. The Kuya Centre is visited each year by the Year 11 Marist Association of Western Australia (今日吃瓜 and St Joseph鈥檚, Northam) . In 2019, our students and staff attending this immersion will present this donation to the Director of the Kuya Centre, Sr Kate O鈥橬eill. Building Bridges Interfaith Dialogue 2019

Each year, students in Year 11 are invited to participate in the Building Bridges project. The 鈥楤uilding Bridges: Interfaith Dialogue in Schools鈥� Program promotes mutual understanding and respect and ethical behaviour across our cultural and religious diversities, to develop competent global leaders for the 21st century.

A special thank you to Mrs Jenny Lindsay and Mr Michael Diamond who have supported our students in participating in each of the workshops in 2019. The final workshop was held on Friday 13 September. Congratulations to all students involved.

Caritas Australia

On Wednesday 11 September, 今日吃瓜 welcomed Deacon Paul Reid (Diocesan Director of Caritas Australia) to visit the Marian, Lavalla and Marcellin campuses to thank our students and staff for their generous support of the 2019 Caritas Australia. 今日吃瓜 raised the highest total of any school community in Western Australia with a total of $19, 254.74. Congratulations and thanks to our students, parents and staff.

Remar Blue Solidarity Camp

The Remar Blue Solidarity camp ran from Wednesday 28 August to Tuesday 3 September in Mullewa, Western Australia, a small farming town 470km North-East of Perth. Following preparation sessions, the students lived and worked alongside the community of Mullewa, where they had a packed itinerary that involved various services to the Mullewa community including helping to host their annual Agriculture and Wildflower Shows, working with the students at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Primary School and hosting their school disco. to read more and see more photos from the camp.

Weekly Thursday Morning Community Mass (Champagnat Chapel 鈥� 8.10am 鈥� 8.35am)

All parents, guardians and families across our PK-12 College are invited to attend the weekly Thursday morning Mass. Our weekly 今日吃瓜 Community Mass is an important way that we as a Catholic community seek to nourish and live-out our faith in community with one another.

AUSTRALIAN CATHOLIC YOUTH FESTIVAL

The Australian Catholic Youth Festival (ACYF) is a national gathering of Catholic young people established by the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference (ACBC). It exists to provide young Australians with opportunities to deepen their relationship with Jesus, be empowered to be disciples in the world today and encounter and celebrate the vitality of the Church in Australia. This year the ACYF will be held in Perth between 8 鈥� 10 December. Young people between the ages of 14 and 35 from around Australia will be invited to:

Participate in high-quality formative and experiential opportunity for young Catholics to encounter Jesus Christ, in the context of the Catholic Church in Australia;
Listen to and discuss the issues and challenges in the lives of young Catholics in Australia;
Engage with local examples and connections of vocations, social action, liturgy and prayer, Catholic music and faith formation.

Students in Year 9 from the College will be invited to apply to attend ACYF. This event will take the place of the Remar Embarkation Camp this year.

The Indigenous Literacy Book Swap

National Indigenous Literacy Day was celebrated on Wednesday 4 September in Australia, and this year at Newman we supported the Indigenous Literacy Foundation by holding a Book Swap at both Marian and Lavalla to raise funds for literacy resources for children in remote indigenous communities. The event was a wonderful opportunity to promote the importance of books and it was a fun occasion for our students to enjoy selecting a new book to take home to read, while at the same time promoting sustainability.

Thank you to our Librarian Mrs Alison Le Dan for coordinating this important initiative.

Better Beginnings Incursion

During Week 7, the Kindy students took part in the wonderful Better Beginnings Incursion at the Marian Library with Melissa Payne from the Cambridge Library. Better Beginnings is a State funded program which aims to promote literacy and reading. All the children received a free Better Beginnings gift bag during the incursion which contained a quality picture book and lots of reading ideas & activities.

Kylie Howarth Incursion

On Wednesday 4 September, the students at Marian Campus were lucky to be visited by award winning author Kylie Howarth. The students discovered how Kylie draws her inspiration from her underwater adventures when creating her book characters and they were very excited to have the opportunity to be illustrators with Kylie. It was a very exciting incursion that was interactive and lots of fun for the students.

James Foley Incursion

On Friday 6 September, the Year 3 students enjoyed a visit by award winning author and illustrator James Foley. James was a huge hit with the students who were enthralled by his engaging performance. He explained the creative process of writing and illustrating picture books and graphic novels and he demonstrated his amazing drawing skills.
