Newman News Term 3 Week 4: From the Principal

On Saturday 15 August the Church celebrates the Feast Day of the Assumption of Our Lady when, according to our faith, the Holy Mother, “having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul into heavenly glory”. Although defined as an article of faith by Pope Pius XII just over half a century ago, the Assumption of Our Lady into heaven has been accepted from back to the earliest of Christian times.

This Feast of the recognition of Mary, the Mother of our Lord, is significant for the Marist Brothers and its Founder, St Marcellin Champagnat and underpins their foundations. As a Marist school in 2020 we seek to embody the characteristics of Mary through our resilience, commitment and strength through gentleness. On Thursday we held our weekly PK-12 Community Mass and recognised our Marist Brothers Churchlands Community. We are so blessed in this College to have Br Terry, Br Paul, Br Noel and Br John living close to us and still ministering their vocation to our community. Their lives have permeated with the richness of bringing to life the Gospel of Jesus Christ, animating us all to be people of transformation and hope. We recognise their contribution and celebrate our Marist charism and the family spirit it imbues.

Across the College this week we celebrated Wellbeing focusing on the whole person and engaging students and teachers in activities that were both fun and community building. Some of the most pleasing aspects of the week were the senior students playing and leading activities with our Primary students at both Lavalla and Marian Campuses. At the heart of our community is the alignment of the faith and learning journey of our composite PK-12 College. We are part of something great and we all have a place where we are valued and supported.

The week will culminate on Friday with a Staff Wellbeing Day which includes sessions from our partners, Edith Cowan University, on healthy living, and the Catholic Institute on the power of meditation and prayer. Our staff have been remarkable in their agility, commitment and support over the significant disruption of COVID-19. This day is an opportunity to take time as a whole staff, to reflect from where we have come and to prepare for the inevitable challenges ahead.

Congratulations Charlotte Easden

Year 12 student Charlotte Easden has won the Zonta International Young Women in Public Affairs Award. The award recognises young women, ages 16-19, who demonstrate volunteer leadership skills/achievements and dedication to empowering women worldwide. The award further encourages the winner to continue their participation in public and political life.

Charlotte gave a moving speech about how Sister Felicitas and Sister Rita from the The Fatima Center in the Philippines have inspired her to pursue a career in Human Rights Law so she can help those that are living on the margins of society. She is also passionate about female empowerment in Australia, breaking stereotypes and encouraging young girls to follow their dreams like she has. We are very proud of Charlotte鈥檚 achievements! to hear from Charlotte about her award.

New Students Morning Tea

Last week we welcomed our new students of Marcellin Campus to a morning tea led by our College Captains and Counselling Team. It was a great opportunity to gauge their transition into our school, receive feedback and build and cultivate relationships. Once again, we are so blessed with our College student leaders by the way they facilitated this event and exemplified the Marist characteristics.

Marcellin Athletics Carnival

Our annual Secondary Athletics Carnival was a resounding success. Our attendance was at an all time high and the atmosphere was electric. Moreover, this Carnival saw multiple records broken and personal bests achieved by many students. A big thanks to Year 12 leaders who again animated their cohort to engage in the community building spirit of the Carnival.

WA Champagnat Cup, Bunbury

The inaugural WA Champagnat Cup was held in Bunbury last Friday featuring our open Netball, boys Basketball and Boys Football teams. The genesis of this day was our Sports Captains, Marcus Romano and Holly Johnson, who formulated the idea of competing against our Marist school in Bunbury. Traditionally, our Marist Carnivals would have been held in the Eastern States but with the advent of COVID-19 meant that this has not been possible in 2020. Thank you to Bunbury Catholic College and to all our players from Newman who participated and competed with a great Marist spirit. We look forward to this becoming an annual event.

Celebrating 105 Years

We were so blessed to have our Marian Campus Receptionist Jan Robertson鈥檚 mother, Bid Grocke, come and speak with our Pre Primary students about the number 105鈥 her age. Her visit coincided with the class’s 105th day of learning so far this year and also ties in with the Unit’s history topic of appreciating our past and religion topic of ‘our families are special’. To top it off, Bid鈥檚 visit was a wonderful addition to our wellbeing week; taking care of our bodies, minds and souls. It was a beautiful experience for all involved.

Using Data to Inform Practice

Our learning cycle uses data to inform practice. Student data comes in a variety of forms and teachers use this data to understand each student and to ensure all students grow in their learning and social emotional development. Thank you to the parents who attended our NPCC meeting that showcased how teachers use data in early childhood, primary and in upper secondary. Please find below the minutes from the NPCC meeting:

Newman Newsreel

The Newman Newsreel is a new and innovative way for the College to engage and share content with families and staff through the power of augmented reality (AR). Each family will receive a fridge magnet called the 鈥楴ewman Newsreel鈥. By downloading and using the 鈥榁iewa鈥 Augmented Reality App, users may scan the magnet, bringing to life options to view weekly videos. These videos are campus specific and contain important information about upcoming events and critical information for students and families. The videos will be updated weekly and provide only essential information to families about the upcoming week. Updated videos will be uploaded each Friday and remain active for one week.

It is important to note that users MUST download the Viewa app to be able to activate the magnet and videos.

Please to view a short introduction video which includes instructions on how to download the Viewa app.

Our Commitment to Child Safety

The College is committed to providing an environment that is safe for all children. We actively work towards and promote the principles of the Catholic Education鈥檚 Child Safe Framework. The framework upholds a child safe culture, healthy and respectful relationships, and extended guardianship in school communities, based on the latest research and recognised best practices. At times, we rely on partnership with parents to ensure all members of our community are safe, supported and cared for. Thank you to community members that have positively and openly supported this intent. If you are concerned about a child, please communicate with Campus Leaders, Leaders of Wellbeing, or any member of the Senior Leadership Team.

Code of Conduct

A reminder to all families that the Code of Conduct can be accessed via the College website. The Code is mandated by Catholic Education Western Australia and the application of the code extends to all staff, students, parents, guardians, caregivers and volunteers.

The Code seeks to value the dignity of every person, foster positive relationships, ensuring confidentiality and accountability and supports professional boundaries. Events held during school hours AND outside of school hours that are associated with the College are also supported by the Code of Conduct. Postings on social media platforms that identify the College or College events are also bound by the Code of Conduct.

Any perceived breaches of the Code can be discussed with any member of the Senior Leadership Team. We thank you in advance for your understanding and support of how we strive to partner positively with one another.

Newman News Term 3 Week 2: From the Principal

FAMILY SPIRIT: This Marist characteristic inspires the principle of 鈥榗ollaborate鈥 as with a pedagogy of presence and family spirit, united in Christ鈥檚 love, we can build a community with a spirit of friendliness and collaboration, enabling young people to become responsible for their own formation. (今日吃瓜 Vision for Learning)

Developing relationships is at the heart of our Marist narrative. Being present to each other imbues a sense of family and underpins the strength of our community. The strength of this College is in the multiple opportunities students have to engage with each other in and outside the classroom.

Central to our Vision for LearningShine through Discovery – Let Your Light Shine Matthew 5:16 – is for our students and teachers to collaborate. Education and learning are interactive, social processes. We believe that students learn best in an environment where they can interact and experience the curriculum, gaining knowledge and learning how to live. Recently I read an article, Why relationships — not money — are the key to improving schools (Ohio university) that posits sustained interactions over time, focused on children’s learning and effective teaching practice, is the best way for people to build trust and build networks that are at the heart of social capital. Put simply, if we build relationships, our learning experience at school will improve.

Goal Setting

Over the last two weeks I have been in many classes across the school where teachers and students are setting their goals for Term 3. For our Year 12 students they are closing in on the end of their schooling life at Newman. Their goals are centred on utilising the time afforded to work hard, seek answers and collaborate with their teachers and each other. There will not be another time in their life when they will have this level of support at their disposal. Making the most of their time is crucial for their success now and for when they approach life post school.

It is no different for students across PK-12: I sat in a Year 4 class this week where students鈥 goals are centred on the mastering of timetables to twelve by the end of the Term. Their energy and joy and commitment will ensure they succeed; for a group of Year 10 students who toured our new learning hub building site, their goals are focused on meeting the requirements that will enable them to qualify for an apprenticeship. In conversation with the construction manager they were reminded that their attitude will be the prime indicator to their success.

At the core of all this is that the College seeks to offer students opportunities and a space to discover what is possible. Our aspiration is that the dreams of our students will animate them to commit, participate and work towards achieving them. In our College we seek to live out the opportunities for growth in our learning, wellbeing and faith. God has given us the capacity to embrace our talents and our gifts to make a difference in the world we live in.

We wish all students every success this term.

Newman Parent Consultative Committee, Monday 3 August 7.00pm, Marist Auditorium

Collaboration and ultimately the partnership between the College and families are integral to the success of every student. On Monday evening, we will be highlighting 鈥榙ata to inform practice鈥. As always, we welcome all families and look forward to the discussion.

Our Marist Family

We keep in mind our Marist schools in Victoria who have returned to remote learning due to the spike in Covid-19 cases. Our prayers and thoughts are with them and all people who are suffering across the world at this time.

Newman News Term 3 Week 2: From the Leader of Early Childhood

We warmly welcome back all families to Term 3. With the easing of restrictions, it has been wonderful seeing parents across the campus again. We place great importance on the involvement of families in the educational journey of children, as we know that parents are the first and most influential educator of their children. As classrooms, the Library and Art Room all begin parent rosters once again, we encourage parents to sign up; children love having their parents at school and through your involvement they also appreciate the value that you place on their educational journey.

Fitness Friday

Fitness Friday has also recommenced and there is a wealth of activities for your children to select from each Friday morning – Lego Club, Gardening, Netball skills, Art Club, Dance Aerobics, Skipping and Table Tennis to name just a few.

We have not been able to secure a coffee van for every Friday of this Term, but the service will be available intermittently, as their availability allows. We encourage families to join in with their child in the activities, enjoy a coffee when available and reconnect with parents you may not have seen for some time

Pre-Primary and Kindergarten parents are asked to remain with their child until the bell rings, at which time they should be taken to their classroom door.

Marcellin Award

Congratulations to the following student who received a Marcellin Award in Week 2:

  • Christoper Kacperek, Year 1: For showing the Marist charism of “Love of Work” and the enthusiasm you have shown for your work and your consistent strive to challenge yourself with your learning.

The Marcellin Award at Marian Campus is drawn from submitted nominations each Wednesday morning at Prayer Assembly.

Pre Primary Red Assembly

Parents are invited to join us for the Pre Primary Red Assembly on Friday 7 August in the Marian Hall.

Pre Primary Landsdale Farm Excursion

Today the Pre Primary students enjoyed an excursion to Landsdale Farm to begin their unit on The Farm. They had a fabulous day exploring and learning about all the different farm animals.

This has also aligned with the baby chicks that they have been watching hatch in their common area.

Wellbeing Week

In Week 4, all students across the College will take part in Wellbeing Week. Everyone will be invited to take part in a number of activities focusing on different areas of wellbeing including physical health, mindfulness and building connection. The week will culminate in a Buddy Day at Lavalla Campus with a range of activities and our annual Lapathon.

Students are permitted to wear their sports uniform all week.

One Wild and Precious Life

Our Marist theme this year 鈥淥ne Wild and Precious Life 鈥 Creating a new humanity鈥 has taken on greater significance as we try to understand the world in a state of crisis.

Staff at 今日吃瓜 were able to reflect on this theme to commence Term 3 and reflected on how despite the challenges, we have many things to be grateful for and only need look to the gifts of our students and families.

There is a range of opportunities this Term for families and students, and together with staff, where our College community can begin to create a new humanity of gratitude and service to one another.

St Vincent De Paul Winter Appeal

Blanket Appeal

We begin Term 3 by offering our support to St Vincent De Paul through their Winter Appeal. This year we are calling for donations of blankets, warm clothes and sleeping bags for those sleeping rough. Items can be placed into the boxes at the Champagnat Chapel or brought to your classroom teachers at the Lavalla and Marian Campuses until the end of Week 3.

Winter Sleepout

On Friday 7 August, we are hosting a PK-12 online community winter sleep out to raise awareness about homelessness. The online winter sleep out marks the conclusion of our donation drive. Families will be invited to participate in the following way:

Mini Marists

This Term sees the beginning of our Mini Marists Social Justice Group.

This group of Year 6 students has begun by looking at what does it mean to be Marist and focused on one of the Marist Characteristics, Love of Work.

This has led to the group鈥檚 first initiative by ensuring all rubbish is placed in bins. Students spent 5 minutes at the end of recess and lunch on Wednesday and Thursday and managed to collect over 10 bags of rubbish.

The Mini-Marists shared this at their most recent prayer assembly and challenged students to make an effort to put their rubbish in the bin.

Their next project turns to the St Vincent de Paul winter sleep out. Stay tuned to see how they continue to grow and serve the community.

Year 11 Student Leaders Commissioning Mass

On Thursday 30 July, Year 11 aspiring Student Leaders attending our community Mass were commissioned as they consider their leadership journey in 2021. Mr Finneran led a prayer of commissioning as Fr Garner blessed the Year 11 Leaders as they begin their discernment.

This was a fantastic opportunity to acknowledge those who have said 鈥榊es鈥 to help grow and shape our College community into a place where Jesus Christ is known and loved and all students can let their light shine.

Year 7 Game Changers Launch

This week saw the Launch of our Youth Ministry program Game Changers with our Year 7 students.
