Swimming lessons听

Our Year 1 and 2 students have had a wonderful start to swimming lessons in our College Pool. I congratulate all these students on the efforts and energy, in not only their lessons, but in also their self-organisational skills.

Assembly 鈥 1Blue听

Thank you to Mrs Day and our 1 Blue student鈥檚 who performed a wonderful assembly and showed us the learning that they have been undertaking in their classroom. Their rendition of 鈥淩ock around the Clock鈥 was a personal favourite, as well as demonstrating the great mathematical learning they have been undertaking.

Liturgy 鈥 St Cecilia鈥檚 Feast Day听

Yesterday, Father Kaz and our Year 1 students led us through a liturgy to celebrate the Feast Day of St Cecilia. Father Kaz shared with us that the lesson we can take from St Cecilia鈥檚 is how she loved God, shared that love with others and showed bravery. As the patron saint of music, our students certainly rose to the occasion with their beautiful singing and liturgical dance.

Newman News Term 4 Week 6: From the Vice Principal

This is the second last newsletter for the 2021 year. Our final newsletter will be published during Week 9 of Term 4.听 The next few weeks will be busy for staff, students, and families alike as we embrace the activities that the end of year inevitably brings. We are finalising our student leaders in the Primary school, welcoming our new community members into the Newman family with our Kindergarten Orientation and Year 7 Transition Workshops this week. We would love for you to save the date for our PK-12 Christmas Carols evening on December the 8, hosted by our Primary students.

As you would be aware from the听Principal鈥檚听announcement in the last edition of the newsletter, our Marian campus relocation and our new Primary school build will be occurring over the next two years. From 2022, we have appointed a Deputy听Principal听Primary, Mrs Lisa听McClue. Lisa will exercise leadership of the PK to Year 6 Primary school. Ms Katya Anderson, Leader of Learning, will oversee the Teaching and Learning of the Primary school. Mr Stuart McClorey, Leader of Wellbeing, will oversee Wellbeing in the Primary school.

It is an exciting time for 今日吃瓜 and this final amalgamation of our Marist school on to one campus is nearly fifty years in the making. The transitionary stage over the next two years presents as a perfect opportunity for the College to conduct alignment audits to ensure our learning, wellbeing, uniform, booklists, Guilds, technology, leadership structures, policies and internal processes and practices are consistent and appropriately sequenced from PK to Year 12. We look forward to engaging our parent and student community in discussions next year, to glean your insight into our historical practices and to honour and leverage our heritage as we move forward into this new space.

Bathers and Rash Vests听鈥撎齆on-negotiable听changes

The College is introducing new College bathers and rash vests next year 2022, which will be available for purchase in January.听听In keeping with College uniform expectations, students are required to adhere to the following changes relating to College bathers and rash shirts.

  • Years 1-2 – No change.听听Students continue to wear their own personal bathers and rash vests.
  • Years 3-6听(2021)听鈥撎鼵ollege bathers and rash vests are compulsory.
  • Years 3-9听(2022)听–听College bathers and rash vests will be compulsory.

Students may wear the older version of the College bathers and rash vests during 2022, as a transition year.听听Otherwise听new bathers and rash shirt must be purchased.

  • Years 3-10 (2023) 鈥 New style College bathers and rash vests will be compulsory. No old bathers or rash vests can be worn.

The rationale behind this decision sits with sun safety and consistent, moderate, and protective bather choice for both boys and girls.听Australia has one of the highest rates of听skin cancer听in the world. Each year almost 2000 Australians die from this almost entirely preventable disease. Our students find it difficult to apply fresh sunscreen on all parts of the body prior to the swimming lessons in HPE during Terms 1 and 4. The rash vest will provide additional protection during the swimming lessons.

Learning Support Audit

Associate Professor Dianne Chambers, a well-respected author, presenter, and lecturer from the University of Notre Dame, conducted an audit this year of our Learning and Education Support structures, processes and policies. We now have her report, and we look forward to planning the enaction of the recommendations as a priority听in the near future. The executive summary can be found below. If you are interested in hearing more about the report findings, please contact me directly via听lucie.McCrory@newman.wa.edu.au .

Executive Summary听

The review of learning and education support at 今日吃瓜 was undertaken as part of a regular review of processes and provisions offered at the school to support students with additional needs and disabilities. The remit for the researcher was to gather data by way of interviews with key stakeholders (leadership, teachers), examination of documents (policy, job descriptions and planning formats) and through focus group interviews (parents and students). These data were collected over the period of one month and provided an overview of the learning and education support services offered at 今日吃瓜 and the perception of these services by key stakeholders.

The results from analysing the data are presented in aggregated form to ensure any one individual was not identified, although most who provided information were not concerned about their voices being heard (and welcomed this approach). The results indicated that there were many staff at the college who were exemplary听in regards to听their support of students with additional needs and disabilities, and that these staff should be highly valued by the college and their knowledge shared with all staff.

There were听a number of听areas identified that could be strengthened including: teacher expectations; planning; behavioural approach; role clarification; funding; communication; and training. Each of听these areas are discussed in relation to measures that can be taken to improve processes at the college. There are four main recommendations that the researcher suggests are most critical for the college to consider. These are:

  1. Clarification of roles in the diversity team and employment of additional learning support personnel.
  2. Examination of behavioural expectations and consequences, including development of strategies to address anxiety across the college.
  3. Provide additional training for teachers in providing reasonable adjustments in the classroom.
  4. Communicate any changes/directions in the college clearly to parents.

It is hoped that these recommendations will assist the college in strengthening its use of evidence-based practices to support students with disabilities across all campuses and to ensure consistency in approaches taken.

Code of Conduct听

The Keeping Safe Child Protection curriculum is a program that spans from 3 years up to Year 12.听 Our College delivers this curriculum during classroom teaching, and through the Wellbeing Programs and Health curriculum.

As a Catholic community we are committed to educating the whole person.听In order to听do this, we need to ensure a safe, supportive and engaging environment. The basis for this environment is that all in the community model what healthy, respectful relationships look like. The Code of Conduct is the definitive guide to the behaviours we want to model to, and expect from, our children and young people. We want to create a culture that assists our children and young people on their learning journey. We can only achieve such a culture in partnership with all who participate in our community.听The Keeping Safe Child Protection curriculum is a program that spans from 3 years up to Year 12.听 Our College delivers this curriculum during classroom teaching, and through the Wellbeing Programs and Health curriculum.

A reminder to all families that the Code of Conduct can be accessed via the College听website. The Code is mandated by Catholic Education Western Australia and the application of the code extends to all staff, students, parents, guardians, caregivers and volunteers.

Any perceived breaches of the Code can be discussed with a member of the Senior Leadership Team. As always, if students ever need support, they are encouraged to contact their Leader of Wellbeing, a College psychologist, Counsellor or classroom teacher.

The Code seeks to value the dignity of every person, foster positive relationships, ensure听confidentiality and accountability and supports professional boundaries. Events held during school hours, and听those听College associated听events outside of school hours are also supported by the Code of Conduct. Additionally, postings on social media platforms that identify the College or College events are bound by the Code of Conduct.听We thank you in advance for your understanding and look forward to a positive partnership that supports our students, your children.

All Saints and All Souls Day

The week began听with听November 1听and 2, where in the Catholic Tradition we celebre All Saints and All Souls Day.听Pope Francis reminds us that听鈥淪aints are not听super听people听who are born perfect, but rather ordinary people who follow God with all their heart鈥. An important reminder that all of us can be saints in the way we choose to live.

All Souls Day is an opportunity to remember the people in our lives who have died and the important role they played in our formation.听For the month of November,听a prayer table has been set in the Chapel that will allow staff, students,听and families to write the names of their loved ones and place it in our听bowl. This bowl will be offered up听on Thursday morning Community Mass, where we will remember those听special people in the lives of our community.

Socktober听for Catholic Mission听

Staff and students across the life of the College have participated in the annual 鈥淪ocktober鈥 celebrations.听鈥淪ocktober鈥 is an annual event initiated by Catholic Mission.听This year fundraising and advocacy has听a focus in Thailand where the Good Shepherd Sisters are supporting vulnerable families by providing for the nutritional, medicinal and educational needs of young children at their Kindergarten centre in Bangkok. Click听here听to听access听more听information听about 鈥淪ocktober鈥 and how听Catholic Mission continues to support听the most vulnerable in our global community.

It was听a picture of colour on Friday morning as staff and students wore their colourful and crazy socks. Lavalla students听played a soccer match against staff, where staff were 1-0 victors and Marian students lined up to shoot the听handmade balls at Mrs听McClue, Miss Anderson and Mr Martino.听Year 8 students at Marcellin participated in听a soccer competition with听Brigid听winning the Boys competition and听Thomas More听winning the听Girls competition.

Thank you to our families, staff and students for听living out the Catholic Social Teaching听of 鈥榩referential option for the poor鈥, where we put the听needs of the poor and vulnerable at the centre.

Altar Server Training

Students have been training to be Altar Servers within the life of our College and their Parish.听Training has taken place in the Chapel, where students have reflected on the purpose of serving, the role of the Altar Server and听the importance of this ministry. We look forward to commissioning all听students at next Thursday 11 November community Mass.

Marist Global Network听

Over three days, the Marist Institute launched its Marist Global Network of schools which 今日吃瓜 is proud to be connected. Our College had a special role in creating a video that captures how we as a Marist community are connected to this global family. This network offers an exciting opportunity for staff, students and families as we continue to consider our place in the world and how we through our Family Spirit, can follow in the way of Mary, to make Jesus Christ known and loved.

If you are interested in finding out more about the Network, please head to this website.

Thursday morning Mass

Our Thursday morning Mass continues to grow in support from our families and听students. All are welcome to attend Thursday from 8.10am. Mass听concludes by 8.40am. The next 2 weeks, will be hosted by听Marcellin and Year 4, followed by Mackillop and Year 3. We are also excited to be welcoming some of our Year 2鈥檚 to these celebrations. All families are welcome at this Eucharistic celebration each week.

Newman News Term 4 Week 4: From the Leader of Early Childhood

It is hard to believe听that听we are almost at the mid-way point of Term 4 and before we know it, the听2021听school year will be over.听It听is听at this听time of听the听year when听a听lot of thought and consideration is given to听ensure听a smooth and successful transition for staff and students听into听the听new school year.

The听upcoming听Kindergarten Orientation听(Monday 15 November)听forms part of these transitions,听as we welcome听a new cohort of students听into what will be听a听14-year journey at听Newman听College. Brownes Dairy Incursion听

Our Year 2 students were lucky enough to have a visit from Brownes Dairy this week, to learn about farming and dairy. The incursion linked to the Unit鈥檚 Science program on Food Technology. Each student (and many teachers too) had the opportunity to milk Belinda the Brownes Dairy cow. Everyone was very impressed with how well-behaved 鈥淐urly-Sue鈥 the farmers dog was, as she sat beside Belinda and kept watch.

Also – each student received a yoghurt and choc-milk to enjoy at the end of the incursion.

Socktober听Day听

Thank you to all families who supported our听Socktober听Catholic Mission Day last Friday. There was a large assortment of crazy, loud socks on display across the Campus.听After lunch, our Year 1 and 2 students competed in a 鈥淪occer goal kick鈥 competition using soccer balls made by our Mini-Marist students using plastic bags.

The aim of this activity was to raise awareness amongst our students of the poverty of children in Thailand, who do not have access to the same resources and equipment that they have. Mr Martino and Ms Anderson were goal keepers, but听it鈥檚 fair to say that the students gave them a pretty good workout!

Telethon Speech and Hearing Loud Shirt Day听

At last Friday鈥檚 assembly we were fortunate to hear Emily Siew (2R) and Oliver Webb (1R) present their Telethon Speech and Hearing 鈥淧ower of Speech鈥 presentations.听听Emily told us all about her dream home and Ollie shared information about his family. Everyone was incredibly impressed with the effort they put into their presentations and their courage at standing in front of all the students and families to present their speech.

Thank you to the Siew family who organised a cupcake stall before school, which raised $500 towards Telethon Speech and Hearing鈥檚 Loud Shirt Day fundraiser.
