Year 11 Philippines Immersion

On Thursday 22 November, our Year 11 Philippines Immersion group will be commissioned at our Thursday Morning Mass.

On Friday 23 November, 14 Year 11 students from 今日吃瓜, will be joined by two Year 11 students from St Joseph鈥檚 School, Northam, to begin their two week Immersion in the Philippines accompanied by Miss Clare Cole, Leader of Youth Ministry & Advocacy, Mrs Rebecca Bramanto, Leader of Wellbeing Year 11 and Mr Daniel Lynch, Deputy Principal Mission & Catholic Identity.

The students attending are:

We congratulate our 2018 Year 11 Philippines immersion group on taking this next step in their journey following their six month formation and preparation process.

Newman Mothers In Prayer: An Open Opportunity for all our Mums

鈥楳ums in Prayer鈥� (MiPs) is coming to a kitchen table near you 鈥�

We have a newly formed triplet of Newman mums who meet around their kitchen table for 1 hour, once a fortnight to pray for their children, their children鈥檚 friends, teachers and our wider school community. They are looking for other like-minded Mums who would enjoy praying together in a relaxed environment over coffee (and sometimes cake!). This is a multi-denominational group of women who desire to actively invite God鈥檚 guidance, favour and protection into daily life. If you are interested in the spiritual growth of your children and their peers, or would like to investigate what this looks like, the next date is set for Wednesday 28 November, 9.00-10.00am (this is the last meeting for the year).

Weekly Thursday Morning Community Mass (Champagnat Chapel 鈥� 8.10am 鈥� 8.35am)

All parents, guardians and families across our PK-12 College are invited to attend the weekly Thursday morning Mass celebrated by Fr Joseph Tran and Fr Mark Baumgarten. Our weekly 今日吃瓜 Community Mass is an important way that we as a Catholic community seek to nourish and live-out our faith in community with one another.

St Vincent de Paul Christmas Appeal

The St Vincent de Paul Christmas appeal is in full swing! Thank you to everyone who has donated so far. In aid of the appeal, the 2019 Social Justice Captains along with the Faith and Liturgy Captains met with Fred Simons from the Doubleview St Vincent de Paul Conference to learn about their work and the direct impact that the donations have for families in need this Christmas Season. Parents are encouraged to watch the following with their children to learn more and discuss the work of St Vincent de Paul. The Christmas appeal at the College will continue until Friday 30 November on the Marian and Lavalla Campuses and Friday 7 December for the Marcellin Campus.

 

24:7 Floreat Youth Group

A message from the 24/7 Floreat Youth Group Leaders, Angela and Sebastian:
“What a night we had at Floreat last week! Experiencing everything from the Irish fiddle to classical cello, from tap dancing to lip syncing. The 24:7 Floreat鈥檚 very first talent show was spectacular! Thank you so much to all the wonderful people that came and made it such a good night. This week, the story of our Old School Heroes continues with games and activities that will keep you on your toes. So come along and bring your friends to win a prize! We meet each Sunday night (6.00pm – 8.00pm) in the Parish Hall at St Cecilia鈥檚, Floreat. Catholic Mission visit to 今日吃瓜

Catholic Mission Schools Engagement Coordinator, Judith Nyamuli, visited 今日吃瓜 on Thursday 8 November to thank the students who attended the Anti-Poverty Mass and share other ideas of how young people can support the work of the Church. The students also had an opportunity to ask Judith questions about the work of Catholic Mission. We thank Judith for taking the time to come and speak to the students.

The Aboriginal Catholic Ministry

The Aboriginal Catholic Ministry (ACM) is a non-profit organisation, of the Archdiocese of Perth founded in 1975 to meet the spiritual needs of Aboriginal people within the Perth metro and surrounding areas. The ACM promote the spiritual, cultural and social development of people of Aboriginal descent. There latest newsletter can be found .

 

Catholic Mission Christmas Concert; In Word and Music

Catholic Mission invites staff, students and their families to attend the annual Christmas Concert on Thursday 6 December at St Patrick鈥檚 Basilica, Fremantle from 7.00pm – 8.15pm.
Tickets are; Adult $30, Concession $20, 12 years and under are FREE. Tickets can be purchased聽.

Catholic Mission are inviting concert goers to consider taking a refugee or single mum along with them. If this is something that they would like to do, as an opportunity for encounter and engagement with someone on the margins in the season of Christmas, they can contact Francis Leong who will make the necessary arrangements for this to happen through the Red Cross and Pregnancy Assistance.

 

World Day of the Poor

The World Day of the Poor will be held on the 33rd Sunday of Ordinary Time, this year on 18 November 2018. In his message for the second World Day of the Poor, Pope Francis has called for a new evangelisation that prompts Catholics 鈥渢o make tangible the Church鈥檚 response to the cry of the poor鈥�. The Australian Catholics Bishops Conference (ACBC) responded through The Australian Bishops Commission for Pastoral Life chairman Bishop Terence Brady encouraging all Catholic communities to be involved and respond to the theme of day: 鈥淭his poor man cried and the Lord heard him鈥� (Psalm 34:7). Creative solutions to complex problems is the mantra of our students as they navigate their learning in the 21st century. As educators, we support students to collaborate with their peers to design solutions and options to demonstrate knowledge and understanding. STEM skills that promote processes of design, prototyping and experimenting challenge students to review and improve their ideas and refine their thinking. Across the College, from the Marian Makerspace, to the Coder Dojo at Lavalla and the entrepreneurship program on Marcellin, exploring ideas supports our students to Shine through Discovery!

NAPLAN Analysis

2018 NAPLAN results have been released and it is pleasing to note that 今日吃瓜 performed above the national average in many outcomes. Spelling and Numeracy were areas of relative strength for most cohorts and reflects some of the different strategies utilised in both primary and secondary contexts. Writing persuasively and imaginatively is an area of growth for most groups of students and will be an area of focus in 2019.

Primary staff have been working with NAPLAN data to review areas of relative strength and areas for focus with current and future year groups. Staff meeting time has been allocated to data literacy and access to bespoke resourcing depending on cohort needs through an external group Best Performance. Extensive time has also been allocated to scope and sequencing of writing across the primary years to better target student areas of need.

Secondary staff have been engaged in productive projects and discussions this year to reflect on the way a range of data sources can be used to personalise the learning experience and activate growth for all students. NAPLAN data is one set of information which also helps target our literacy and numeracy intervention strategies along with Allwell Testing and class-based assessments and observations.
NAPLAN also assists us in providing data informed teaching and learning, which is in line with the College鈥檚 annual school improvement plan.

2019 Parent Funded BYODD

Next year 今日吃瓜 will continue the parent funded, designated device model that commenced in 2016.

• All students in Years 3 – 6 will require an Apple iPad. A summary can be found here聽聽
• All students in Years 7 – 11 will require a Microsoft Surface Pro. A summary can be found here.聽

Parents will be required to purchase a device for students entering Year 7, current Year 8 and current Year 9 cohorts. 2019 will be the last year for the College funded MacBook program for students in Year 12. Please refer any queries to your relevant Leader of Wellbeing.

Gratitude Program

Year 11 students continue to affirm each other through the writing of Gratitude notes that are distributed through PCG.
All families are reminded that if they have a concern about the education or Wellbeing of their child, they should contact the College directly. We are always willing to support families, but school matters must be managed by the College. It is not appropriate to contact other families about concerns you have about their child. Please direct these matters to the classroom teacher, Leaders of Wellbeing or any member of the Senior Leadership Team.

Social Media

The College recognises the convenience of year group Facebook pages that are moderated by parents. This is an excellent platform for sharing information involving College events and requirements. It is not appropriate to use social media platforms to seek clarity on teaching and learning or to debate College policies. Please refer these matters to your child’s classroom or PCG Teachers, or a member of the Senior Leadership Team. We thank you in advance for your understanding and support of how we strive to partner positively with each other.

Code of Conduct

A reminder to all families that the can be accessed via the College website. The Code is mandated by Catholic Education Western Australia and the application of the code extends to all staff, students, parents, guardians, caregivers and volunteers and extends to all forums including social media and email forms of communication. The Code seeks to value the dignity of every person, foster positive relationships, ensure confidentiality and accountability and support professional boundaries. Events held during school hours AND outside of school hours that are associated with the College are also supported by the Code. Any perceived breaches of the Code can be discussed with any member of the Senior Leadership Team.
