Newman News Term 1 Week 10: From the Head of Primary

We journey together to be better followers of Jesus.

The students have enjoyed another amazing Term and should be proud of their efforts. The way they have each come together in their classes and worked with their new teacher this year has seen them progress in their learning, their confidence and their understanding of what it means to come to a faith filled school. The season of Lent calls us to examine our lives and to see how we can follow the Gospel to rise again with Christ. Our faith drives all that we do here at 今日吃瓜 and one of the greatest benefits is the sense of belonging, the sense of community, the sense of connection. These elements provide the perfect building blocks for learning.

Sustainability

Commencing in Term 2, we would like to support our families to reduce the amount of packaging and plastic in children鈥檚 morning tea and lunches. We would like to encourage recyclable containers, paper and wax wraps to replace single use plastics and packaging. Teachers will share information about waste and environmental impacts in each class in an age appropriate way.

We will be supporting our students to sort their rubbish at lunch and recess into the big recycle bins supplied by the Town of Cambridge and continue to feed our hungry worms with the compostable waste.

Each year level will begin their gardening projects next Term. Family assistance is appreciated and welcomed and gardening advice from any Newman green thumbs would be well received. Watch out for further notes and information.

Our Sustainability Committee would like to propose a new initiative called Newman Exchange where we share, reuse and recycle things in our school community. This could start with our own 鈥淟ittle Library鈥 where you can bring a book and take a book or share extra produce from your garden such as lemons. Let us know your ideas.

Project Compassion

Thank you to everyone who gave so generously to Project Compassion this year. Your kind denotations will be received by those who are less fortunate and are greatly appreciated.

Walk for Water

To help our Years 3-6 students understand just how far some people need to walk for water each day, they participated in the walk for water event. This relay highlighted how fortunate we are and helped drive our Project Compassion fundraising efforts.

Solar Car Challenge

On Tuesday 9 April, a team of four students participated in the 2019 Synergy Solar Car Challenge Grand Final held at Optus Stadium. The team were faced with the challenge of assembling a solar car from a small solar panel and car parts. They had one hour to design and make their cars and they then put their cars to the test, racing them over a 20-metre track to see who was the fastest. Congratulations to the team, Swarom Kanvinde, Emily MacLaurin, Olivia Ralls and Stefano Rapanaro who showed great collaboration skills and persistence throughout the competition.

Newman News Term 1 Week 10: From the Deputy Principal Mission and Catholic Identity

鈥業n these weeks of Lent, God has told us about his love and awoken in us a trust in him. Now, in this last set of readings as we enter Palm Sunday and Holy Week, God is showing us how to trust even when the presence of God seems far away, our strength diminished and our trust stretched. The readings of Holy Week could almost have a single heading: This is Your Life. As you walk through them, I encourage you to see where your life and the life of Jesus intersect, as indeed they do鈥 鈥 Sr Hilda Scott OBS, Jambroo Benedictine Abbey.

Please to access the Mass times for Easter across the Archdiocese of Perth.

Years 7-12 Holy Week Liturgy

On Wednesday 10 April, the Marcellin Campus gathered as a community to recognise Holy Week and Easter by celebrating a Liturgy led by a group of Year 12 leaders. Students gathered were invited to reflect on the enduring challenge of the Easter story in our Christian tradition, and to place themselves in the continuing tradition which invites each of us to live the promise of Jesus鈥 resurrection in proclaiming the Gospel in our world.

PK-Year 2 Easter Liturgy

Our Marian Campus was led by the Year 2 students in the Easter Liturgy that portrayed the Passion of Christ. The students were able to see the true meaning of Easter and all joined in the story.

Reconciliation

The season of Lent has allowed our students in Years 4 – 6 to take part in the rite of Reconciliation. This Sacrament repairs our relationship with God, with each child being able to receive absolution before Easter. Thank you to Fr Chinh and Fr Kaz for celebrating this for us.

Plenary Council 2020

The staff and students of 今日吃瓜 have been contributors to the listening and dialogue process of the Plenary 2020. Please see below an update from the Plenary Council, and an overview of the next steps in this watershed moment in the life of the Australian Catholic Church:

Late last week, the National Centre for Pastoral Research (NCPR) completed the statistical analysis and reported that more than 17,500 submissions had been lodged, thousands of which represented groups. In all, more than 222,000 people either made an individual submission or participated in a group discussion that culminated in a submission. Read more below or .

The NCPR will continue its quantitative and qualitative analysis of the stories that people have shared over the coming weeks. From that analysis, which will include prayer and discernment, national themes for discernment will emerge and be announced in June. Reports will be published on each of the themes and allow ongoing involvement for the large numbers of people who participated during the Listening and Dialogue phase.

St Vincent de Paul Winter Sleep Out

On the afternoon and evening of Friday 24 May students on the Marcellin Campus (Years 7 鈥 12) at 今日吃瓜 will have the opportunity to participate in the St Vincent de Paul Winter Sleep Out.

The theme of the sleepout is homelessness and aligns with the Australian Catholic Bishops鈥 2018鈥2019 Social Justice Statement, titled; A Place to Call Home: Making a home for everyone in our land, which was written in response to the growing problem of homelessness in Australia.

Students participating in the Sleep Out will take part in advocacy activities that explore homelessness in Australia, Catholic Social Teaching and what they can do, as individuals and as a community, to help address the issues connected to homelessness.

Download the attached document for more information and an expression of interest form. If you have any questions regarding this event, please feel free to contact Miss Clare Cole, Leader of Youth Ministry and Advocacy, on 92049416 or alternatively at clare.cole@newman.wa.edu.au

Project Compassion 2019

The theme for Project Compassion 2019 is based around hope and giving Lent 100%. The journey to Easter, that we have been undertaking, is also about hope. Hope in the resurrected Christ, in God鈥檚 eternal love and mercy. Through your generous support of Caritas Australia, you are demonstrating the power of hope. Hope enables us to rise above our fears and helps those in great need to shape a better future for their communities.

今日吃瓜 has once again demonstrated a willingness to stand in solidarity with the poor and marginalised in our world. Your efforts towards Project Compassion bring hope to those around us. We thank you for your generosity. As we are still collating the donations from the three campuses, the final amount raised for Project Compassion will be communicated early next term. We thank you once again for your support.

Newman News Term 1 Week 8: From the Deputy Principal Mission and Catholic Identity

Gospel for Sunday 31 March
– Luke 15: 1 鈥 3, 11-32

Sunday 31 March is Laetare Sunday, the halfway mark of Lent, and we pause for a breather. It is on this Sunday that our Gospel offers to us this most consoling image of God鈥檚 love in the Gospel of the Prodigal Son (Luke 15: 1 鈥 3, 11-32). 鈥淧rodigal鈥 can mean lavish, even wasteful. We employ the term usually on the returning son, but it better depicts attitude of the boy鈥檚 father to his son.

I offer the following reflection from Fr Sean Cullen (Trust Lenten Program, Catholic Diocese of Wollongong) as we prepare for this Sunday:

This Gospel contains arguably the best known and loved story that Jesus told. Those who hear it and read it can find in it their own story. It is called the parable of the prodigal son, but could easily be called the parable of the merciful father. We can identify with all three characters in the parable. The father 鈥 who clearly represents an all loving and forgiving God 鈥 can be for us a model of selfless love. The younger brother is someone we can easily relate to, as he runs away to search for life and learns from his mistakes along the way. But it is the elder brother who we need to turn our attention to, because it was his blind-spot which Jesus was trying to highlight. The father loved both sons with all his heart, no matter what they did with their lives. Nothing they did could diminish his love for them.

As we reflect on the words of this Gospel, may we continue to be abundant, even 鈥榩rodigal鈥 in the care, support and love we extend to one another.

Weekly Thursday Morning Community Mass (Champagnat Chapel 鈥 8.10am 鈥 8.35am)

All parents, guardians and families across our PK-12 College are invited to attend the weekly Thursday morning Mass. Our weekly 今日吃瓜 Community Mass is an important way that we as a Catholic community seek to nourish and live-out our faith in community with one another.

May we return to the words of Blessed John Henry Newman as we continue our Lenten journey:

There is nothing stable
but you O my God.
And you are the centre and life of all,
who change,
who trust you as their Father.
who look to you
and are content to put themselves
into your hands. Amen.
(John Henry Newman)

Project Compassion Update

To date, our College community has raised $5893.70.

Caritas Ks

On Wednesday 27 March, the Year 8 students participated in a Caritas Ks event, where they walked in solidarity with those who walk many kilometres for water. The students participated in two activities:

  • Students walked laps of the oval carrying water buckets of different sizes to understand that some people travel long distances for a minimal amount of water and that some people have to carry a heavier load.
  • Students participated in a relay where they had a bucket containing 6L of water. Students had to soak a sponge and pass it down their PCG line and empty it into an empty bucket. Once they had completed the task, we measured the amount of water that they had salvaged and discussed water scarcity.

The Year 8 students worked well together to complete these activities and showed some real consideration in their answers to the discussion questions. Money is still coming in, however at this stage they have raised over $350.

Slavery-free Easter Chocolate

Pope Francis said 鈥渆very person ought to have the awareness that purchasing is always a moral 鈥 and not simply an economic 鈥 act.鈥

It is estimated that up to 40 million people are trapped in slavery globally 鈥 1 in 4 of these are children. They will never get an education and they will never taste the chocolate produced from the cocoa beans they pick. But people around the world are making decisions that could change this tragedy.

To buy slavery-free Easter chocolate look for any of these three certification symbols on the wrappers: FAIRTRADE, Rainforest Alliance and UTZ. It鈥檚 delicious and you can buy it at ALDI, Haigh鈥檚, Oxfam and other leading supermarkets and shops. for more information and resources.

Newman News Term 1 Week 8 鈥 From the Principal

Thank you

The strength, resilience and support that pervades our College community has marked the tenor of the last week. Shock, confusion and uncertainty have been felt by many regarding the passing of Fr Joe Tran and the surrounding circumstances. Over the last few days our students, staff and families have been magnificent in their sensitivity and understanding. Our Years 7- 12 Assembly on Monday morning was as difficult and challenging a moment as I have ever experienced in school leadership. As I spoke to the students and staff, the question of why and how permeated my every thought. We do not have the answers to what has happened, but what we can do is seek to support each other and provide a space, a school, a community where every person is valued, trusted, supported, and protected.

The dignity of each human being is a critical tenet in our Christian story. The respect for the dignity of all people underpins our Marist charism, identified through the characteristics of presence and family spirit. As a College this can been seen in our relationships, in what we say and ultimately what we do. We will continue to develop, grow and nurture our young people to be respectful of each other, to be loving, and to be hope-filled.

Thank you to families for not only your words of encouragement and reflection but also for the questions of uncertainty and clarification. These have been welcomed and acknowledged. Thank you to Fr Mark Baumgarten, Assistant Priest Our Lady of Grace North Beach, for the beautiful way he celebrated our PK-12 Community Mass on Thursday morning. The prayerful nature of the Mass, coupled with the beautiful singing, truly reflected the very best of our College.

I would like to restate that 今日吃瓜, as a member of Marist Schools Australia and Catholic Education Western Australia, upholds the highest possible standards in relation to the safety and protection of children. Ms Lisa Fogliani, Vice Principal, outlines the specifics in her newsletter article today.

Our prayer over the last few days – used with our students, staff and at our Newman Parents evening on Monday – was the peace prayer from St Francis of Assisi. I urge you to take the time to reflect on these words:

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace:
where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
where there is sadness, joy.

O divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek
to be consoled as to console,
to be understood as to understand,
to be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive,
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.
Amen.

Newman Parents

We were delighted to have Dr Justin Coulson attend 今日吃瓜 last Monday to facilitate two parent sessions. Over 70 parents attended the morning session for parents of Early Education students, 鈥9 Ways to a Resilient Child鈥, and 220 parents attended the Newman Parents evening session, 鈥楻espectful Relationships: Love at Home鈥.

Newman Parents is part of the College鈥檚 commitment to parent partnership and being active participants in the education of their children, in collaboration with the College. Our next event is taking place on Wednesday 12 June 鈥 Cybersafety.

ACC Swimming Carnival

Congratulations to all members of the ACC Swimming Team who performed well in the A Division Carnival on Wednesday. The good story is that we were competing in A Division for the first time in five years. Our placement of 5th out of 7 teams ensures we stay in this Division, thus providing a great platform for the future. Thank you to all coaches and staff for supporting our swimmers.

Capital Development

Parents would have received a letter from me yesterday advising of the approval to commence a major Capital Development Project on the Marcellin Campus 鈥 The Learning Hub, in Term 3 2019. Please to view the architectural 鈥楩ly Through鈥 of the proposed development.

Marist Basketball Carnival

The Marist Basketball Carnival commences in Bendigo Victoria on Sunday 7 April.

Our Open Marist Boys and Girls Basketball teams will travel to Bendigo Victoria next week to compete. This elite national competition brings together the very best Marist Schools across Australia for this prestigious Carnival. Our students have spent many months in preparation and we are hopeful of great results. The strength of the Carnival is in the Marist family spirit within each school and the relationships that are formed aside from the fierce competition. We wish them every success!
