Newman News Term 3 Week 4: From the Leader of Primary

This week has been a great celebration of all things wellbeing at school. Students have taken part in a range of activities, lessons, and discussions centred around our four themes for the week: physical health & fitness, connection, mindfulness, and gratitude. Whilst I think wellbeing has always played an important role in schools (even when it may not have been called 鈥榳ellbeing鈥�) I think has been recognised even more over these last 18 months. The challenge of the COVID pandemic brought to light the importance of strong relationships, connection with others, and having the time and space to look after ourselves and one another. As adults, it is very easy to get caught up in our busy lives, and often I see parents doing so much for their kids, that we can sometimes neglect to take care of ourselves. I have encouraged all students today to give some time back to their Mum and Dad over the extended weekend break, and give parents an opportunity for some self care of their own too. Parents deserve to be looked after too!

Highlights from Past Two Weeks

Last week students gathered in the Auditorium to celebrate all of our Merit award winners, as well as celebrate Knox faction who were announced as the winners of the Cross Country Carnival. Congratulations to all students who took part in our carnival and for their great efforts on the day. We were also treated to a wonderful assembly from 3 Green. They took us on a journey all over the world exploring some of the different cultures of students in their class. It was so heart-warming to see students working together and so obviously enjoying putting on a show for us all. A big congratulations to 3 Green and all of our merit award winners this week!

Marcellin Award

This week the Marcellin Champagnat award was presented to Damon听Caratti from 5 Red. Damon may just be one of the politest young men on our campus. He was nominated by听a number of听teachers for the kind, respectful, and gentle way he interacts with others. He leads by example听through his beautiful actions, and always offers a friendly smile to those that pass him by in the class or playground.听Well听done Damon听on setting such a good example for other students around what it means to be a fine young gentleman!

Wakakirri Dance Festival听

On听Thursday August 5听our year 5/6 Primary Dance Troupe performed in the听Wakakirri听Nation-wide story telling competition at the Perth Concert Hall. Students performed a 鈥渟tory dance鈥� called Sarah鈥檚 Heavy Heart, based on the picture book written by Peter Canavas.

The story was one of听hope and resilience听and friendship. Sarah struggles to carry her heavy heart which is sometimes heavy with worry until she meets a听friend听and the burden of worry is shared.

The dance was choreographed by Mrs Amy听Raveendrakumar听and danced听expertly听by our Primary Junior Dance troupe.听听今日吃瓜 was awarded certificates of Best Minimalist Set and Best Public Speaking.听Congratulations听to Mrs听Raveendrakumar听all the wonderful dancers involved in performing this beautiful story.

IPSHA Cross Country听

Earlier today, 64 students across Years 3-6 ventured down to Bunbury to take part in the IPSHA Interschool Cross Country Carnival. While we can share the results of the carnival in our next newsletter, we can say听for sure that students have had听a great time听today and听represented听our school very proudly. We owe a big thanks to Mrs Richards听our coach Lenny听who has been training with our students and working with them to prepare for their big day.

Fiona Wildey visit听

Earlier this week we were very fortunate to welcome former Olympian Fiona Wildey to our campus as she came to speak with our Year 3 and 4 students. Fiona spoke about her experiences at the Seoul Olympics, and the journey that took her there, showcasing to students a number of items of memorabilia, and providing students with some interesting facts about Olympic etiquette among other things. Most importantly though, Fiona spoke about the Olympic values and her own personal values, including determination, commitment, and sacrifice. It was very inspiring to hear her journey, and who knows…she may even inspire a future Olympian among us today!

Year 5 Special Visitor听

Yesterday afternoon, Year 5 students had a special visitor to their classrooms. 5 Blue student Luke Rombouts brought in two of his bobtail lizards to show to the classes. Luke was a wealth of knowledge as he discussed all things habitat, feeding, and characteristics. We are very grateful to Luke and for the learning experience he was able to share with his classmates.

This week I was out in the carpark making some observations of driver behaviour. Unfortunately, we are having trouble with vehicles double parking next to the drive through lane, and children walking through these vehicles into their own car. This is a very dangerous thing to do, and I am quite afraid that if this continues, it will eventually lead to an accident or injury of a child.

We encourage parents to display patience in our Lavalla carpark and demonstrate good road safety practices.听 Please park your vehicles in the parking bays provided and walk over to pick your child/children up from the waiting area. This will assist with child safe practices and remove any risk of injury to students.

We appreciate your cooperation. We are currently reviewing the carpark pick up/drop off situation.

Highlights from Past Two Weeks听

Book Week听

What a fabulous week of celebrations we have had this week, all around the theme 鈥淥ld worlds, new worlds, other worlds鈥�. A huge thank you to families who supported their students in dressing up for our annual book week parade. The children had a great day, as did the staff! It is a fantastic way to promote the love of reading amongst our students. A massive thank you to Mrs Alison Le Dan for her considerable efforts in making this week a success every year.

Book Week Author Incursion听听

Marian students听enjoyed听an incursion by Western Australian author Sian听Turner. Sian spoke to the students about her creative process and inspired many young students with the possibility of becoming authors or illustrators.听Students also listened to Sian鈥檚 stories 鈥淎 Whale of a Day in Botany Bay鈥� and听鈥淏eyond our Garden Gate鈥�.

Pig the Pug 鈥� Book Week competition winners听

It was incredibly difficult to judge the winners, amongst all the fantastic entries. A big congratulations to all children who entered and used their creativity and imagination to invent a new 鈥減ig the pug鈥� character.

If you have not yet enrolled your child in Kindy or Pre-Kindy for 2022, it is essential that you do so as soon as possible. Please contact 今日吃瓜 Registrar for further information, including our flexible Kindy and Pre-Kindy offering.

The听Great Book听Swap

On Friday 3 September we will be holding a Book Swap in the undercover area at the Marian Campus and the event will run from 8.20am听–听8.50am. The Book Swap raises much needed funds to buy books for听disadvantaged听indigenous children听in remote indigenous communities.

Families are asked to donate good quality chapter or picture books from now until Thursday 2 September.听 Donations can be dropped off at the library or to Marian reception.
On the day of the swap the students听are asked to听bring a gold coin donation and select a book to take home from those that have been donated. Students are welcome to bring additional money if they would like to purchase several books.

Father鈥檚 Day Liturgy听

We warmly invite all Marian fathers to join us on Thursday听2 September at 9.00am for our听Father鈥檚 Day Liturgy.听The听liturgical听celebration has been prepared by听our Year 1听students and will be celebrated in St Cecilia鈥檚 Parish.听I would also听like to take this opportunity to wish all our听Dads听and father figures, a very听Happy Father鈥檚 Day听for Sunday 5 September.

Marian / Lavalla Athletics Carnival听

We are excitedly preparing for our first combined Marian and Lavalla combined听Athletics Carnival.

The Carnival will be held on Friday听10 September听at the Marcellin Oval.

Wellbeing week for our students,听gave听them the听opportunity to be involved in various activities听that听highlighted听the importance of our 4 themes,听Healthy, Connected, Present, and Gratitude.听听On Friday our staff听will come together听to听hear听Brendan Spillane,听an Australian Educator, speaker,听and coach,听facilitate听a workshop on听鈥楾he Wellbeing Challenge of Complex Times鈥櫶齛nd will focus on our personal wellbeing and our impact on others.

CEWA Faith Day 鈥� Monday 16 August 鈥� Pupil Free Day

Speak Up Awards

今日吃瓜 is once again delighted to have representation at this event sponsored by the Grand Lodge of WA Freemasons.听听The program endeavours to provide young students with the opportunity to learn, develop and practise public speaking skills.听听听Year 6 students, Harry Dolan, Liam White and Isabella Crisona will attend the heats on Tuesday 17 August. Please join me in wishing all participants the best of luck with the delivery of their speeches.

Lavalla Music Night 鈥� Tuesday 17 August, 6.30pm

The evening will consist of performances by鈥痵tudents in鈥痀ears鈥�3-6 enrolled in the instrumental program,鈥痠ncluding the鈥痠nstrumental鈥痑nd鈥痸ocal鈥痚nsembles,鈥痑nd selected soloists.鈥疨arents and friends are invited to attend this free event. No tickets are required.

Artist in Residence 鈥� Community Workshop 鈥� Wednesday 25 August, 6.00pm

The College is pleased to welcome acclaimed Western Australian textile designer Tanya Cain-Abbs as part of the 2021 Artist in Residence Program.
Come along and enjoy a workshop with Tanya to learn the technique听Shibori听(a Japanese manual resist dyeing technique which produces patterns on fabric). All materials provided. Limited positions are available. No experience necessary.

This is a unique opportunity to engage with one of Western Australia’s most acclaimed artists.

The workshop will run for approximately 2 hours at a cost of $50pp. (RRP $160pp)

Uniform Shop Purchases

Please be reminded that at the commencement of Term 4 2020, the Uniform Shop was no longer accepting cash.听听The Uniform Shop accepts all major credit cards and EFTPOS and operates a successful lay-by system with a small deposit. We鈥痙o not鈥痑ccept American Express.
The Uniform Shop also accepts phone orders and payment (from parents) for collection by students.

Code of Conduct

The Keeping Safe Child Protection curriculum is a program that spans from 3 years up to Year 12.听 Our College delivers this curriculum during classroom teaching, and through the Wellbeing Programs and Health curriculum.

As a Catholic community we are committed to educating the whole person.听In order to听do this, we need to ensure a safe, supportive and engaging environment. The basis for this environment is that all in the community model what healthy, respectful relationships look like. The Code of Conduct is the definitive guide to the behaviours we want to model to, and expect from, our children and young people. We want to create a culture that assists our children and young people on their learning journey. We can only achieve such a culture in partnership with all who participate in our community.听The Keeping Safe Child Protection curriculum is a program that spans from 3 years up to Year 12.听 Our College delivers this curriculum during classroom teaching, and through the Wellbeing Programs and Health curriculum.

A reminder to all families that the Code of Conduct can be accessed via the College website. The Code is mandated by Catholic Education Western Australia and the application of the code extends to all staff, students, parents, guardians, caregivers and volunteers.

Any perceived breaches of the Code can be discussed with a member of the Senior Leadership Team. As always, if students ever need support, they are encouraged to contact their Leader of Wellbeing, a College psychologist, Counsellor or classroom teacher.

The Code seeks to value the dignity of every person, foster positive relationships, ensure听confidentiality and accountability and supports professional boundaries. Events held during school hours, and听those听College associated听events outside of school hours are also supported by the Code of Conduct. Additionally, postings on social media platforms that identify the College or College events are bound by the Code of Conduct.听We thank you in advance for your understanding and look forward to a positive partnership that supports our students, your children.

Newman News Term 3 Week 2: From the Deputy Principal Secondary

Highlights from the Past Two Weeks听

Marcellin staff have enjoyed welcoming our students back to Term 3. I am very pleased with the positive way our students have commenced the school term, prepared for another exciting term with many opportunities for our students to let their light shine. This term is the final term for our graduating class of 2021. It is my hope that our Year 12 students make the most of their final weeks at 今日吃瓜, setting an example of perseverance, determination, resilience and always striving to achieve their personal excellence in all aspects of听College听life.

Parent Teacher Interviews

Thank you to all parents, students and families for the way you engaged in last week鈥檚 parent teacher interviews. Working collaboratively with our families ensures positive educational outcomes for our students and it is important that students take on feedback with a growth mindset. While the College offers formal interview times throughout the year, parents are encouraged to check SEQTA regularly for results and feedback and are also welcome to contact their child鈥檚 teacher to discuss the progress of their child鈥檚 learning.

Year 11 Leadership Day and Dinner Dance

On Friday 23 July, the听Year 11 cohort听celebrated the end of a very successful Semester听1听with听the Student Leadership Day. Students had presenters from Alpha Motivation lead them in a range of group work challenges and activities which helped to build leadership skills and strengthen their bonds as a year group. Dr. McCrory, Mrs. Pastorelli and Mr. Martino also addressed the themes of Servant Leadership and Marist Leadership. This day signified the beginning of the groups journey as College Leader鈥檚 and was the perfect way to come together after the challenges of Semester 1.

Later that evening (and with much excitement!), the annual Dinner Dance was held at AQWA. Students were able to explore the aquarium before heading into the spectacular function room. The students looked incredible and danced the night away, taking many photos, while enjoying good food, great music, and even better company. The Donut Wall and Mr Diletti鈥檚 dance moves were a big hit!

I would like to thank all Year 11 students for their engagement on the day and the outstanding way they represented both themselves and the college.

Big Science Competition

In May this year, the Big Science Competition was held. The Big Science Competition is a听50 minute, multiple choice competition testing scientific knowledge, critical thinking and听problem solving听skills. Questions are set in real-life, contemporary contexts, making them relatable and interesting. To receive a High Distinction, a student must perform in the top 5% of all competitors. I would like to congratulate Scarlett Jones, Year 8 on receiving a High Distinction this year. Scarlett was recognised for her achievements at the Principal鈥檚 Assembly this week.

Athletics Carnival听

The Guild Athletics Carnival will be held on Thursday 5 August at the State Athletics Stadium, Claremont. We are looking forward to a great day of competition. Students are to make their own way to and from the stadium. If this is not possible, there are limited places on a bus that will depart from and return students to the College.

School Parking

I would like to remind parents and families to use the drive through/drop off system and designated parking on the Marcellin campus for school drop off and pick up.

At the end of the day, all students walk to the car park area and wait for parents to pick them up from the designated drive through/pick up area or the park/pick up area. Students who use public transport need to assemble at the assembly points on Tuscany Way where they will be supervised by teachers as they board the relevant bus.

Parents are asked to mindful of residents in the area, obstructing traffic and student safety during school drop off and pick up time. Parking in No-Standing Zones along Tuscany Way or Empire Avenue is not permitted and residents are within their rights to call the council ranger if cars are parked inappropriately.

Subject Selection for Year 11, 2022

Please see below the timeline for subject selection for Year 11, 2022.

  • Term 3, Week 1-2
    College staff will contact families on an as-needed basis to discuss concerns or questions.
  • Term 3, Week 3
    Information about enrolling in Onsite (work experience) and TAFE will be provided to students and families.

VET Certificate courses

Students can now apply for VET (TAFE) Certificate studies for the 2022 school year. VET Certificate studies allow students to attend training one day per week as they work towards their Certificate II, III, or IV qualification. UniReady听Program for 2022

Year 11 students听have the opportunity to听apply for the听UniReady听Program for 2022.听UniReady听is an alternative (non-ATAR) pathway to听University. By completing听UniReady听in Year 12, students will have the opportunity to enter University with an ATAR of 70.

To apply, Year 11s should check their Direct Messages and contact Mr Farley with the necessary information.

Year 12

University applications open (TISC)

As of 19 April, Year 12s can apply for a place at University in 2022. In Term 3, all Year 12s will be provided with detailed information on how to apply via TISC.

There is no rush to apply and students will not miss out on a place at University. It is better to take your time and think carefully about the right course for you.

Closing dates are 30 September (for Medicine/Dentistry) and 21 December (all other courses).

University Early Offers

Western Australian universities are publishing their Early Offer programs for students entering university in 2022. Please see below for details:

  • Curtin University

    Offer conditional on attaining the necessary ATAR for that course.
  • Edith Cowan University (ECU)

    Offer conditional on attaining the necessary ATAR for that course.
  • Murdoch University

    Unconditional offer even if you don鈥檛 achieve the necessary ATAR for that course. However, students must meet any subject prerequisites.
  • Notre Dame University

    Unconditional offer but also includes an interview and consideration of non-academic achievements.
  • University of Western Australia (UWA)

    Unconditional offer if students have a high enough predicted ATAR (predicted ATAR +3 for courses below 92 and +1 for courses above 92). Otherwise the offer is conditional on attaining the required ATAR for that course.


Thinking of studying Medicine or Dentistry next year?

If you are in Year 12 and thinking of studying Medicine or Dentistry next year (either at Curtin, or via direct pathway to UWA) you must sit the Undergraduate Clinical Aptitude Test (UCAT) this year.

The dates for UCAT testing 2021 are:

  • 1 July: Testing begins
  • 11 August: Last test date

You can find out more about the UCAT at or you are welcome to book an appointment to talk to me. There are many different ways into Medicine and Dentistry so come and ask if unsure.

Take a Gap Year with the Defence Force

You may be interested in taking a Gap Year next year and spending a year working in the Australian Defence Force (Army / Navy / Air Force). Details of this program can be found at:听

Year 12 students and families are reminded that all students enrolled in ATAR courses must attend, and make a genuine attempt at, the ATAR examinations. Failure to do so will result in that subject not counting towards your ATAR and/or WACE (graduation).
