Newman News Term 3 Week 10 : From the Principal

Migrant and Refugee Sunday 鈥 26 September听

Migrant and Refugee Sunday is celebrated in Australia on the last Sunday in September. This brings the practice of the Church in Australia into line with the practice of the Church around the world.
The 2021 Theme is 鈥楾owards An Ever Wider We鈥.听 It calls all of us to consider our place in the world and the responsibility we have to support marginalised and dislocated people.听 As part of our College Ministry focus, we support refugees and asylum seekers through our Alms giving.听 In addition, our advocacy of support, is exemplified by Pope Francis鈥 words, of 鈥榳idening the tent to embrace everyone鈥 who is in need.听听You can read Pope Francis鈥 Message for the World Day of Migrants and Refugees 2021鈥.

Year 12 2021听

On Thursday we听celebrated the final day of formal education for听our听Year 12 students with a Principal鈥檚 Assembly and other dedicated activities.听听In my speech听I听reflected on the听recent听WA Community Cabinet with the Premier, Mark McGowan, his听ministers听and students from across the seat of Churchlands and Nedlands which included 9 of our students in Years 10 and 11.听He said to them, 鈥淲hat you have on offer at your school, you need to take advantage of鈥.听 In his words,听he said 鈥淛ust use it鈥.

The Premier put to the students in the room, that we are in a privileged position here in WA; not only are we hosting the Grand Final in Perth but by the fact that we can meet, we can celebrate, we can go out, we can be at school and study as if life is normal.听 We know that our Eastern States counterparts, and certainly the Year 12 students in Victoria and NSW, have spent the last 3 months at home trying to navigate the end of their educational journey in lockdown. Please click here听to view the full speech.

A highlight of the assembly was our Year 6 student leaders and siblings of our graduating class in attendance.听 In addition, the Lavalla Primary school students along with the Secondary students formed a guard of honour as the Year 12 students moved from the Gymnasium to the Auditorium.

We听now听look forward to the formal听Year 12听Graduation ceremony in Week 2 of Term 4.

Student Leadership 2022听

At Thursday鈥檚 assembly we also announced the Leadership Group for 2022.听听Congratulations to Isabella O鈥橰ourke and Joshua Downes who have been appointed College Captains and all those students who have been selected for leadership. I look forward to working with you all and am confident that you will let your light shine.

End of Term听

Following an event packed term, I wish all staff, students and families a restful and enjoyable Spring break and look forward to welcoming everyone back in Term 4.

Year 12 Last Week听

Week 10 was the final week of school for our Year 12 cohort. Throughout the week, students participated in a variety of activities such as a disco, capture the flag game, scavenger hunt and the traditional water slide on Thursday morning.

We said goodbye to our Year 12 students at the Principal鈥檚 Assembly on Thursday. Mr Phil Walleystack joined us and spoke to the College Community about the experiences that formed him as person. Our students have seen Phil conducting 鈥榃elcome to Country鈥 at major College events and at the assembly, we had the opportunity to hear more of his story. Phil鈥檚 message to our students and the Class of 2021 was about knowing your own value and taking all opportunities as you never know where they can lead you.

To conclude the assembly, students in Years 3 鈥 11 created a Guard of Honour across the Marcellin oval for our Year 12 students. It was a very special and moving moment for the Class of 2021.

2022 Student Leadership Team听

This year 37 Year 11 students embarked on the Year 11 Leadership Preparation program. Prospective leaders attended a commissioning mass and four afterschool workshops focused on strengths, values, and service.

Students produced written applications, underwent a student and staff vote, shortlisting and interviews. Students nominating for College Captain also presented to members of the Executive and Senior Leadership Teams.听The applications and presentations this year were of an extremely high standard and all Year 11 students should be proud of their efforts throughout the program and of their continuing role as leaders in our community.

I am looking forward to seeing these students grow their leadership skills with a strong foundation of faith,听strengths听and values. I would like to thank Miss Cristina听Guzzomi, Leadership Coordinator and Mr Mat Puljiz, Leader of Wellbeing Year 11 for their support and guidance of these students throughout this process.

Throughout the day, students engaged in sessions on leadership qualities, character strengths and then specifically looked at how they can assist our incoming Year 7 students in settling into high school. Thank you to Miss Gemma Beekink, Leader of Wellbeing Year 10 and Miss Cristina Guzzomi, Leadership Coordinator for organising and facilitating this leadership opportunity for Year 10 students. I am really looking forward to seeing these students lead our 2022 Year 7 students with care, compassion and empathy.
