2019 Marian Lecture: 鈥楢fter the Angel Departed 鈥� Seeking God: hints and glimpses of the God within鈥�

The Marist Association of St Marcellin Champagnat hosts a biennial lecture series across Australia known as 鈥楾he Marian Lecture鈥�.

The biennial Marian Lecture for the Marist Association will be an encounter with international speaker, biblical scholar, author and award-winning poet, Dr Bonnie Thurston, who will draw on the rich tradition of contemplation and how to be attentive to the God within.

Learning Hub – Capital Development Project Community Forum

Late last term the College announced to the community the approval of the Learning Hub development on the Marcellin Campus. The College will host a Community Forum facilitated by the College Architect, Bob Sly, Munns Sly Moore, to present the Learning Hub development and answer any question members of the community may have.

A webpage has also been created to address community questions and provide details about the project. This webpage covers broadly the topics to be covered at the community forum. to access the webpage.

 

Year 6 Parliament House Excursion

The Year 6 students continued their leadership focus as they visited Parliament House last week. They learnt about how governments are formed, our electoral process and could compare their leadership qualities against politicians of the past.

Student Reflection

On Tuesday 14 May, the Year 6 classes went on an excursion to Parliament House. We participated in three activities. Firstly, we went to The Constitution Centre where we learnt about the levels of government, the leaders of Parliament and how the Queen is represented by a Governor General. We then visited the Electoral Centre where we learnt how to vote and enjoyed an activity where we voted for our favourite type of candy. Skittles won because they are the best! We also visited Parliament House where we were taken on a tour and learnt about the history of the building. We were very fortunate to see question time which is where the opposition asks the government questions about how they are running the country.

By the end of the day, we had learnt lots of new facts about Parliament House and how our country is run. It was a great excursion.

St Vincent de Paul Winter Sleep Out

Tonight (Friday 24 May) students on the Marcellin Campus (Years 7 鈥� 12) will be participating in the St Vincent de Paul Winter Sleep Out. Students participating in the Sleep Out will take part in advocacy activities that explore homelessness in Australia, Catholic Social Teaching and what they can do, as individuals and as a community, to help address the issues connected to homelessness. for more information.

K-12 Celebrating Champagnat Day 鈥� Friday 14 June

Thursday 6 June 2019 is the Feast Day of St Marcellin Champagnat, the founder of the Marist Brothers and of Marist education. To mark this very special day in the life of the International Marist Institute, our K-12 College community will be celebrating Champagnat Day across the College on Friday 14 June.

Weekly Thursday Morning Community Mass (Champagnat Chapel 鈥� 8.10am 鈥� 8.35am)

Marist Youth Ministry Post School 2019 Philippines Immersion

Marist Youth Ministry is now calling for applications for the 2019 Philippines Immersion occurring between 30 November to 14 December. The Cost of the immersion is $2,600 plus the cost of interstate return airfares to and from Sydney. Pilgrims are also required to raise $300 towards donations to the organisations we visit. Australian Catholic Youth Festival, Perth (December 8 鈥� 10, 2019 Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre)

In December this year, Perth will be hosting the Australian Catholic Youth Festival (ACYF), a national gathering of young Catholic people established by the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference (ACBC). Registrations are now open. 今日吃瓜 is looking forward to supporting this important event with selected students representing the College. We look forward to the opportunity to showcase Perth to visiting young Catholic people from across Australia. to learn more about the ACYF.

Newman Parents is pleased to host Susan McLean, Cybersafety expert. Responsible digital citizenship is a priority across all wellbeing programs for our students. Parent education is essential as we seek to partner together for the safety of our children. This session is designed to cater for all parents from Early Childhood through to upper Secondary. Keeping up with the latest online trends, apps, games and safety measures can be overwhelming, however, with guidance and education, keeping safe online can be done.

Multicultural Week

The Language Department helped the Years 7-12 students celebrate Multicultural Week with a series of events scheduled during lunchtime this week. We saw some Greek dancing, an Aboriginal Dance performance on the Tuesday, PCG quizzes and a Gelato van visit on the Friday. A big thank you to the staff and students who made the week possible.

DOMS Report

Members of our College community have continued with their commitment to assist the Dominican Special Needs Youth Group (DOMS) this year. This group, which operates once a month out of Our Lady of the Rosary Parish in Doubleview, provides friendship and hospitality to adults with special needs, who are former students of 今日吃瓜 and other nearby Catholic Colleges.

Now in its 26th year of operation, DOMS as it is known by the students of 今日吃瓜, has already run three events this year including; a games night, an Aussie Bush Dance and a Quiz Night with Mr Matt Connell as Quiz Master. A combination of present and former students, along with some of their parents, have come along to help run the events and enjoy the company of our members. If you would like some more information about this wonderful ministry in which we participate, please feel most welcome to contact Jennifer.Lindsay@newman.wa.edu.au. Our next DOMS event is a Disco Night on Friday 14 June.

Counselling Team Wellness Sessions

On Wednesday, the Years 10 and 11 students attended the second session of the Wellness Talks presented by Headspace. Students were provided with important information regarding mental health difficulties and how to look after their general wellbeing. The session was both interactive and engaging. Headspace is a free service available to young people offering both group and individual support options for a range of wellbeing concerns. Nearby centres are in Osborne Park, Fremantle, Joondalup and Midland. The next of the Wellness talks will take place in Week 8 for Year 7 and 8 students.

Year 11 Dinner Dance

The 2019 Year 11 Dinner Dance will be held on Wednesday 3 July at AQWA Function Centre, Sorrento from 6.00pm to 10.30pm. A letter was sent home to all families on Thursday 23 May.
